I describe here a new technique for precision radial velocity measurements, using an iodine absorption cell in front of the slit of a high resolution spectrograph. A CCD in a continuous readout mode records a timeseries of stellar spectra with a duty cycle of unity. In January 1987, observations were obtained on two clear nights with bad seeing. No oscillations were detected in the data, but the technique shows promise for significantly better results under better conditions.

AbstractWe present our ongoing survey of ∼1000 GK-giants with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope in search for planets around evolved stars. The stars selected for this survey are brighter than 11 mag and are located in the section of the HR-diagram, which is approximately delimited by the main sequence, the instability strip, and the coronal dividing line. We use the High Resolution Spectrograph to obtain stellar spectra for radial velocity measurements with a 4-6 m s−1 precision. So far, the survey has discovered a planetary-mass companion to the K0-giant HD 17092, and it has produced a number of plausible planet candidates around other stars. Together with other similar efforts, our program provides information on planet formation around intermediate mass main sequence-progenitors and it will create the experimental basis with which to study dynamics of planetary systems around evolving stars.

AbstractWe briefly describe the instrumental effects which affect the accuracy of the radial velocity measurements. We have implemented several methods to correct for the instability effects and improve the accuracy of the measurements. These include modifications of the observational strategy and a time-dependent wavelength solution as well as a discussion of the error of the offset from cross-correlation. These methods are applied to observations obtained with the high resolution échelle spectrograph SOFIN mounted at the Cassegrain focus of the alt-azimuth 2.56-m Nordic Optical Telescope, La Palma, Canary Islands.

AbstractBy using the 1-m reflecting telescope at Weihai Observatory of Shandong University, the transit observations of seven stars are carried out to accurately estimate the physical parameters of extrasolar planets. Besides, a new high-resolution spectrograph (WES) was installed on this telescope for radial velocity measurements on exoplanets, we will show some preliminary results.

AbstractCARMENES is a pair of high-resolution (R ≳ 80, 000) spectrographs covering the wavelength range from 0.52 to 1.71 μm with only small gaps. The instrument has been optimized for precise radial velocity measurements. It was installed and commissioned at the 3.5 m telescope of the Calar Alto observatory in Southern Spain in 2015. The first large science program of CARMENES is a survey of ~300 M dwarfs, which started on Jan 1, 2016. We present an overview of the instrument, and provide a few examples of early science results.

Ultrathin sections are stained immediately after cutting by placing them in contact with staining solution and then placed on a slide covered by a celloidin film. This method largely avoids precipitates of heavy metals. The recovering of celloidin film is improved using a stainless steel basket. This technique is far more reliable than that involving use of a filter paper.
