AbstractWe present small radio telescopes consisting of commercial instruments for satellite TV reception. With these radio telescopes we can observe the 12 GHz emissions from the quiet sun and solar flares. Since microwaves occurring in our environment, e.g., those from a building and a fluorescent lamp, are also detectable, such radio telescopes are useful not only for radio astronomy education but also for physics education.

AbstractThe first long-term maser (mainly methanol) monitoring program is under way with the radio telescopes of Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Center. The first activity of this program was to develop an observations methodology and data registration and reduction software for the Ventspils telescopes. The developed routines are to be used for maser variability monitoring, investigating short bursts of intensity and a search for new, previously unknown, maser sources. Currently the program consists of 41 methanol masers observed at 6.7 GHz, while new ones are periodically added. The maser sources are observed at 3 – 5 day intervals. It was found that most the sources display a significant level of variability with time, ranging from a few days, up to several months and, perhaps, years. In addition to non-varying masers, several types of maser variability behavior were observed, including: monotonic increases or decreases, un-periodical, quasi-periodic and periodic variations.

Low-frequency radio telescopes are cheap and useful devices for the investigation of terrestrial and extra-terrestrial emissions. These emissions come either from the Sun and the planet Jupiter to terrestrial emissions. This project aims to investigate the Very Low Frequency (VLF) waves from mid-August to October 2019 using Radio JOVE (20 MHz) and SSID (3-30 kHz) to observe for the occurrence of solar flares and see how if the radio telescopes that the team set up is reliable. This will allow us future students aspiring to learn about astronomy to examine solar flares in detail during the upcoming solar maximum. Not many flares were detected as this period happens to be a solar minimum. However, a series of flares occurred between 30 September 2019 and 1 October 2019, which the telescopes have been able to detect, particularly SSID.

Purpose: A historical review of the experimental baselopment of low-frequency radio astronomy in Ukraine, its foundation half a century ago by an outstanding scientist S.Ya. Braude to the current state. Design/methodology/approach: The constant progress of electronic, computer and digital technologies, information and telecommunication technologies, theory and practice of antenna and receiving systems design, which introduction enriched the hardware and methodological ideology of construction and usage of the UTR-2, URAN, and GURT radio telescopes, have been used. Findings: The worldwide most effective national experimental radio astronomy means, the UTR-2, URAN, and GURT decameter-meter wave radiotelescopes, have been created and improved. The best combination of the systems main parameters: sensitivity; frequency band; spatial, frequency and temporal resolutions; noise immunity; uniformity of amplitude-frequency and space-frequency characteristics and multifunctionality has been provided. Conclusions: For the half a century of radio astronomical scientific and technical at the Institute of Radio Astronomy of NAS of Ukraine, the high astrophysical informativeness of the low-frequency radio astronomy and the possibility of creating a highly efficient experimental base – giant radio telescopes of decameter-meter wavebands have been proved. Today, the Ukrainian radio telescopes are well known and recognized world-wide being indispensable and most in demand by the scientific community. The founder of the decameter radio astronomy in Ukraine, the eminent scientist Semen Yakovych Braude was not mistaken when he decided to start radio astronomical explorations. The memory of him will always remain in the minds and hearts of many generations. AbstractAn international VLBI experiment on radio location of the asteroid 2012 DA14 was organized on 2013 February 15–16, during its flyby close to Earth. The purpose of observations was to investigate and specify orbital parameters of the asteroid, as well as to evaluate its rotation period and other characteristics. The irradiation of the asteroid was performed by the RT-70 transmitter at Evpatoria (Crimea, Ukraine), while the reflected signals were successfully accepted by the two 32 m radio telescopes at Medicina (Bologna, Italy) and Irbene (Ventspils, Latvia). Processing and interpretation of the data were performed both in the Radiophysical Research Institute at Nizhny Novgorod and in the Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Center. The first results of this experiment are presented and discussed.

Radio astronomy studies the physics and chemistry of cosmic sources and cosmic phenomena at the radio wave spectrum. Radio telescopes are built to detect radiation within this spectrum. This chapter provides a historical walkthrough on the development of radio astronomy and radio telescopes. Significant discoveries and works pioneered by scientists in radio astronomy are highlighted. Nobel laureates who have led to groundbreaking contributions in this field are listed.

The book tells about the achievements of modern radio astronomy. Data on radio galaxies, quasars, pulsars, space masers, and other space objects emitting radio waves are presented in a popular form. The ways of evolution of stars, supernovae and radio eruptions of their remains, the formation of white dwarfs and neutron stars, the phenomena in the centers of galaxies and the fusion of galaxies responsible for the formation of radio galaxies and quasars are considered. The radio radiation of the Sun and planets is discussed. A modern view of the evolution of the universe, the origin of the relic radiation left over from the Great Eruption, and its anisotropy is presented. A separate chapter is devoted to the description of radio telescopes.

The Working Group was formed at the IAU XXV General Assembly in Sydney, 2003, as a joint initiative of Commissions 40 Radio Astronomy and Commission 41 History of Astronomy, in order to assemble a master list of surviving historically-significant radio telescopes and associated instrumentation found worldwide, and document the technical specifications and scientific achievements of these instruments. In addition, it would maintain an on-going bibliography of publications on the history of radio astronomy, and monitor other developments relating to the history of radio astronomy (including the deaths of pioneering radio astronomers).
