ABSTRACTAsthma is a chronic respiratory disease which is experienced by a large number of Australian school children. Although these children are of comparable intelligence to their non-asthmatic peers, they generally achieve less well at school. In the paper we review the literature on the following factors in an attempt to explain the depressed educational achievements: 1) neurological damage resulting from anoxia during asthma attacks; 2) side effects of medication used to control asthma; 3) frequent absence from school, and 4) attitudes and expectations of teachers, parents and peers. Clearly more research is required to investigate the interaction between these factors.

Background: Eye is one of the most vital organs of human body. Any abnormality in the eye can impair vision and make the person handicapped for life. The school children form a special group because they are most vulnerable to the effects of reduced vision and its impact on learning capability and educational potential. The objective of the study was to find out the factors affecting vision of secondary school children, to suggest preventive and remedial measures for defective vision. Methods: It was a cross sectional study. School children of Zilla Parishad secondary high school during November 2016 to December 2016 were studied. A pretested semi structured questionnaire was administered. A total of 320 students were included in the study by using convenient sampling technique. Data was entered in Microsoft excel sheet and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. Results were expressed as proportions for different study variables. Results: Out of the 320 students, majority 181 (56.56%) of study participants were girls. The highest number of students (49.38%) was between 12-13 years of age group. Prevalence of defective vision is 34%. Family history is present in 29% of the study population. 34% of children with defective vision, it was detected by their mother. Conclusions: Refractive errors are more in girls. Children and parents should be educated regarding ocular hygiene and early correction of refractive errors.

Background: Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India observed National Deworming Day (NDD) on February 10, 2016 and second round on August 10, 2016 in all 36 States/UTs of the country. The same initiative was implemented in the state of Goa; the present study was aimed at evaluating this initiative. The objectives of the study were to find the compliance of school children to albendazole tablets and also to find any side effects encountered by the students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in month of Ocober 2016 amongst total of 266 parents completed a self-administered questionnaire. The Data retrieved from completed questionnaires was entered in EpiDATA and analysed by SPSS version 23. Results: Of the total 65.8% of students received albendazole tablets. The overall compliance to the albendazole was 61.3%. Only 4.1% of students developed minor adverse reactions. Overall 78.9% of the parents were willing to participate in the next round of NDD.Conclusions: The compliance to the albendazole was less than expected. There is a greater need to involve parents and teachers to improve the compliance of students towards albendazole to achieve desired outcomes.

The effect of 40 µg of SCH 1000 (ipratropium bromide, an anticholinergic agent) on bronchodilation and suppression of exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) was compared with 400 µg of fenoterol and a placebo in a single-blind controlled study. Twenty-seven randomly selected asthmatic children performed a standardized treadmill exercise challenge and the 17 children who were shown to have EIB continued in the study. Pulmonary function was evaluated before and after drug administration and exercise. When individual results were analyzed and grouped according to the responsiveness of EIB to the drugs, two patterns emerged: (1) the EIB was more severe in those (6/17) children who did not respond to either drug than in the rest of the children; (2) the resting pulmonary function was significantly better in the children (4/17) who responded to both drugs than in those (7/17) who responded to fenoterol alone. In conclusion SCH 1000 was shown to be an effective bronchodilator comparable to, but no better than, fenoterol. It had minimal side effects. As an EIB inhibitor it depended on relatively normal base line pulmonary function and only a moderate deterioration following exercise, whereas fenoterol depended on the exercise response alone. Although anticholinergic drugs are not very extensively used, SCH 1000 may be useful in some patients where the β2 adrenergic drugs cause significant side effects or are contraindicated.

A test of the concept of horizontality was devised to examine the performance of a sample of 861 Australian school children in grades 1 to 6 tested in their classrooms. They were required to pencil in the water on eight outline drawings of a bottle standing at various angles. The concept was found to be quite difficult to attain, for not until age 10 years did more than 50% of subjects score well. A confusion of the horizontal and vertical was observed with some subjects, the confusion significantly occurring with those who had developed an appreciable understanding of the concept of horizontality, but were not fully operational.
