Over-constraint is an important concern in mechanism design because it can lead to a loss in desired mobility. In distributed-compliance flexure mechanisms, this problem is alleviated due to the phenomenon of elastic averaging, thus enabling performance-enhancing geometric arrangements that are otherwise unrealizable. The principle of elastic averaging is illustrated in this paper by means of a multi-beam parallelogram flexure mechanism. In a lumped-compliance configuration, this mechanism is prone to over-constraint in the presence of nominal manufacturing and assembly errors. However, with an increasing degree of distributed-compliance, the mechanism is shown to become more tolerant to such geometric imperfections. The nonlinear load-stiffening and elasto-kinematic effects in the constituent beams have an important role to play in the over-constraint and elastic averaging characteristics of this mechanism. Therefore, a parametric model that incorporates these nonlinearities is utilized in predicting the influence of a representative geometric imperfection on the primary motion stiffness of the mechanism. The proposed model utilizes a beam generalization so that varying degrees of distributed compliance are captured using a single geometric parameter.

Abstract A non-parametric model for magneto-rheological (MR) dampers is presented. After discussing the merits of parametric and non-parametric models for MR dampers, the test data for a MR damper is used to develop a non-parametric model. The results of the model are compared with the test data to illustrate the accuracy of the model. The comparison shows that the non-parametric model is able to accurately predict the damper force characteristics, including the damper non-linearity and electro-magnetic saturation. It is further shown that the parametric model can be numerically solved more efficiently than the parametric models.

A study was carried out with 135 surgeons to obtain a surgical laparoscopic grasper handle design that adapts to the size of each surgeon’s hand, in a functionally appropriate way, and has the sufficient ergonomics to avoid generating the problems detected nowadays. The main conclusion of the work is the practical 3D parametric design obtained for a laparoscopic surgical graspers handle that is scalable to fit each particular surgeon's hand size. In addition, it has been possible to determine that the anthropometric measure of the surgeon's hand defined as Palm Length Measured (PLM) allows the design of the 3D parametric model of the surgical handle to be conveniently scaled. The results show that both additive manufacturing and the application of ergonomics criterion provide an efficient method for the custom design and manufacture of this type of specialised tool, with potential application in other sectors.

A cardiovascular single-unit-stay program began at North Memorial Medical Center, Robbinsdale, Minn, in January 2000. Before then, cardiac surgery patients had been admitted to the intensive care unit directly from the operating room and then transferred to the postcoronary care unit on postoperative day 1 or 2. The traditional care delivery model created multiple transfers and delays in care, which often led to dissatisfaction among patients, increased costs, and greater potential for errors. The cardiovascular single-unit-stay program allows patients to stay in the same room with a consistent care team throughout the patients’ postoperative course. Decreased lengths of stay, decreased morbidity and mortality, increased satisfaction among patients and their families, and improved collaboration between members of the multidisciplinary team are just a few of the positive trends since the program’s inception.
