SummaryThe Zungaro jahu is an important large catfish of the order Siluriformes that is in danger of extinction due to habitat destruction. Studies on its biology are scarce and the majority relates only to nutrition or parasitology. In order to provide greater information on its morphology and aid husbandry and larviculture studies, the aim of this study was to characterize larval development in Z. jahu from hatching to total yolk absorption. Samples were collected at pre-established times, processed, stained, and analyzed under stereomicroscopy, light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Total yolk absorption was observed by 60 hours post-hatching (hph) at 28.75 ± 0.59°C. The newly hatched larvae showed slightly pigmented body, the outline of the digestive tract, evident eyes, and the first swimming movements. Mouth opening took place at 12 hph and the connection between the oral cavity and the rudimentary intestine was observed at 24 hph. Were analyzed the main larval organs and systems: digestive organs, heart, gill arches, sensory system, thyroid, kidney, and swim bladder. As the larvae grew, these organs became more mature and functional. The development of the sensory and feeding structures was observed at the start of larval development, and thus before depletion of endogenous energy reserves, the strategy for this species is to increase its chances of survival in the environment.

Abstract The objective of this study was to describe the embryonic and larval development of Brycon amazonicus, featuring the main events up to 50 hours after fertilization (AF). The material was provided by the Aquaculture Training, Technology and Production Center, Presidente Figueiredo (AM). The characterization was based on stereomicroscopic examination of the morphology of eggs, embryos and larvae and comparison with the literature. Matrinxã eggs are free, transparent, and spherical, with a perivitelline space of 0.56 ± 0.3 mm. The successive divisions give rise to cells with 64 blastomeres during the first hour AF. The gastrula stage, beginning 02 h 40 min AF, was characterized by progressive regression cells and the formation of the embryonic axis, leading to differentiation of the head and tail 05 h 30 min AF. From 06 to 09 h AF the somites, notochord, otic and optic vesicles and otoliths were observed, in addition to heart rate and the release of the tail. The larvae hatched at 10 h 30 min AF (29.9 °C), with a total length of 3.56 ± 0.46 mm. Between 19 and 30 h AF, we observed 1) pigmentation and gut formation, 2) branchial arches, 3) pectoral fins, 4) a mouth opening and 5) teeth. Cannibalism was initiated earlier (34 h AF) which was associated with rapid yolk absorption (more than 90% until 50 h AF), signaling the need for an exogenous nutritional source. The environmental conditions (especially temperature) influenced the time course of some events throughout the embryonic and larval development, suggesting the need for further studies on this subject.

Larvae of Chthamalus malayensis (Cirripedia: Thoracica) from Hong Kong were cultured in the laboratory. Larval development includes six naupliar stages and a non-feeding cypris stage. Larvae reached the cypris stage in 20 d at ∼21°C compared to 14 d at ∼28°C. Morphological features including the cephalic shield, frontal horns, labrum, abdominal process, antennules, antennae and mandibles in all nauplius and cypris stages were described and illustrated using a combination of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Attempts were made to compare morphological differences between the nauplii and cyprid of C. malayensis with those of other Chthamalus species including C. stellatus, C. montagui, C. dentatus, C. fragilis, C. dalli, C. antennatus, C. fissus and C. challengeri. The present description of the nauplii of C. malayensis is not in agreement with the previous description of this species.

SummaryAstronotus ocellatus, popularly known as Oscar, is a cichlid fish from the Amazon basin (Brazil) with a great potential for fish farming. The aim of this research is to describe the morphology of eggs and larvae of A. ocellatus under stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Eggs from natural spawnings were taken to hatcheries, collected at previously established time periods and then analysed. Oscar's eggs are demersal, adhesive and fragile to touch, with a slightly oval shape. The fertile eggs are yellowish in colour and when unfertilized are a white opaque colour. In the initial collection (IC), the majority of eggs were found to be at the gastrula phase with 30% epiboly. At 12 h after the IC, the formation of the embrionary axis and somites was observed, followed by differentiation of the tail and of the head. Fifteen hours after the IC, the emergence of the optic and otic vesicles, and of adhesive glands and the yolk pigmentation was observed. Larval hatching took place between 46 and 58 h after the first collection, at an average temperature of 27.45 ± 2.13°C. The larval stage was characterized by the development of the heart, fins, branchial apparatus, neuromasts, taste buds and adhesive glands on the head. Larval development to yolk absorption took a period of 257 h. These results provide important information for reproduction, rearing and preservation of A. ocellatus.

Background and Aims: Rhabdias bufonis (Rhabdiasidae) is a nematode parasite of family Rhabdiasidae infecting the lung of amphibians. The present study provides new morphological details for R. bufonis isolated from the lungs of the African common toad, Amietophrynus regularis based on observations of light and scanning electron microscopy. Methods: Forty specimens were collected during the period from March to August 2017 from its natural habitat; the damp, moist fields and gardens at Giza governorate, Egypt. Nematode worms were isolated from the lungs, fixed and then preserved. They were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy with further line drawings. Results: 14 specimens (35%) were found to harbor a large number of Rhabdias. Body of the gravid females were elongated, slender, measured 3.22–9.86 (5.64±0.03) long and 0.09–0.48 (0.23±0.02) mm wide at mid–length. Buccal capsule was with cylindrical lumen and sclerotised walls 13–31 (18 ± 2) long and 16–27 (24 ± 2) mm wide. Ovaries were almost straight. The uteri were located anterior and posterior to the vulva. Uterus filled with large number of eggs (17-42). Eggs were oval in shape, 0.120–0.132 (0.126±0.002) × 0.039–0.812 (0.517±0.02) mm and some of them were with fully developed larvae inside. The tail was comparatively short, gradually tapered, tail length 0.131–0.435 (0.320±0.02) mm long. SEM showed that worms possessed an oval anterior end with a simple, slit like oral opening. The lipless edges of mouth opening bordered with tiny cuticular elevations, radiated outwards. Two pairs of submedian cephalic papillae were observed around the oral opening as well as two amphids. Conclusion: The current study introduced new morphological details for R. bufonis isolated from the Egyptian frog, which was not reported in the previous studies, of them, the morphology of the slit–like mouth opening, the two pairs of cephalic papillae, two amphids and the three pairs of cuticular elevations supporting the area around mouth opening.

AbstractScanning electron microscopy was used to study the female surface morphological characteristics of the mouth opening (lips and such adjacent structures as amphids, papillae and chitinous ribbed flaps), caudal area (vulva, anus), and eggs with filaments on poles of the pharyngodonid species Cithariniella khalili Petter, Vassiliadès et Troncy, 1972, obtained from Synodontis frontosa Vaillant at Lake Turkana in north-western Kenya.

The pit organs (free neuromasts) of sharks are part of the lateral line sensory system, but there is still confusion about their exact morphology and function(s). This is partly because of reported physiological differences between the pit organs and the lateral line canal neuromasts, and partly because the morphology of pit organs has not been adequately documented. To compare their morphology, the pit organs and canal neuromasts of the gummy shark Mustelus antarcticus (Chondrichthyes: Triakidae) were examined using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Both pit organs and canal neuromasts had hair cells with the `staircase' arrangement of sensory hairs (stereovilli) characteristic of vertebrate mechanoreceptors. Stereovilli bundles of different sizes were distributed haphazardly throughout the pit organs and canal neuromasts. The density of hair cells was similar in the pit organs and canal neuromasts, but differences in the overall size and/or shape of the sensory epithelia might account for some of the reported differences in mechanosensitivity.

We describe Dirofilaria immitis occurring in the peritoneal cavity of a dog from Korea. Two worms were found in the fat of the umbrical cord area during operation for an umbrical cord hernia in a dog (four year old, female, Maltese). In gross findings, the worms were slander white and measured 132 mm (female), 111 mm (male). The tail of the male was spirally coiled. In light microscopy, the uterus was filled with not fully developed eggs. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the cuticule was smooth on the head but those of the tail exhibited complex cuticular striation in the male. Head papillae were located in a cephalic plate forming a rectangular pattern dorsoventrally, with 4 inner labial papillae and four outer cephalic papillae. The mouth opening was very small and the bursal cavity was absent. Laterally there was a pair of amphids.
