Microlipophrys adriaticus (Steindachner & Kolombatovic, 1883) is an endemic blenny of the Mediterranean Sea. It is also known from the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. However, unlike other species of combtooth blennies, M. adriaticus is a fish with a limited distribution in Adriatic Sea, especially in the north, where it can be common. We report here the first record of this species from the waters of the Ionian Sea.

The genus Smacigastes Ivanenko & Defaye, 2004 (Harpacticoida, Copepoda) is the most primitive genus in the family Tegastidae Sars, 1904, occurring in deep-sea chemosynthetic environments, such as hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, whale falls and wood falls. Our exploration of the Onnuri Vent Field, the sixth active hydrothermal vent system in the Central Indian Ridge, resulted in the discovery of a new species in the genus Smacigastes. A detailed morphological analysis of S. pumilasp. nov. reveals that it most resembles S. barti Gollner, Ivanenko & Martínez Arbizu, 2008, described from a hydrothermal vent in the East Pacific Ridge; the new species can be distinguished from the existing species by the 8-segmented female antennule, the absence of an abexopodal seta on the antennary basis, the mandibular exopod represented by a single seta and the exopod of the first leg with five setae. This is the first record of Smacigastes in the Indian Ocean. A dichotomous key to species of the genus Smacigastes worldwide is provided.

The distribution and ecology of the isopod family Haplomunnidae Wilson, 1976 are reviewed with new records given for Thylakogaster Wilson & Hessler, 1974, Mid-Atlantic Ridge and east Pacific Ocean, and for Munella Bonnier, 1896, Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the eastern Atlantic near the African coast. The specimens of these two genera, collected from Lucky Strike (Mid-Atlantic Ridge), are the first record of the family from hydrothermal vent habitats. The systematics of the Haplomunnidae is updated and the synonymy of Aryballurops Gamô, 1983 with Haplomunna Richardson, 1908 is proposed. Thylakogaster lobotourus Wilson & Hessler, 1974 is redrawn from the first known intact specimen and additional description of the appendages is provided.

The molluscan diversity of deep-sea chemosynthetic ecosystems in Japan has been in general well documented with about 80 described species, of which over half are gastropods (Sasaki et al. 2005; Fujikura et al. 2012; Sasaki et al. 2016). Recently, however, a number of novel hydrothermal vent sites were discovered in the area using multibeam echo-sounding (Nakamura et al. 2015), providing opportunities for new discoveries. As a part of ongoing studies documenting the biodiversity of such sites, we present the first record of Columbellidae from hydrothermal vents, with a new species recovered from Natsu and Aki sites, in the Iheya North hydrothermal field (for map and background on the vent field see Nakamura et al. 2015).

Abstract The present study investigated the population of the xanthid brachyuran crab, Macromedaeus distinguendus (De Haan, 1835), at a toxic hydrogen sulfide, shallow hydrothermal vent area at Turtle Island, off northeastern Taiwan. This is the first record of this species from this extreme environment, and M. distinguendus is only the second brachyuran discovered in this area. The wet weight of male and female M. distinguendus varied from 0.11 to 1.22 g (mean ± standard deviation: 0.56 ± 0.39 g) and 0.06 to 0.62 g (0.37 ± 0.15 g), respectively. The wet weight: carapace width ratio was significantly correlated in both sexes. The local distribution patterns of M. distinguendus were different from those of the obligate hydrothermal crab Xenograpsus testudinatus N. K. Ng, J.-F. Huang & Ho, 2000 (Xenograpsidae) in this area. An analysis of resource use and habitat partitioning revealed that the two crab species were able to co-exist within the study area.
