Upon the gradual addition of Al3+ to a solution of HL, the sensor showed a large fluorescence enhancement at 420 nm. The reason for this phenomenon is that the addition of Al3+ to the solution of HL results in the formation of a 1 : 1 stoichiometry of the binding mode of L–Al which inhibits photoinduced electron transfer (PET).
