Complexation copper with amine provides an effective strategy for fixation copper in wood, while hydrophobic modification improves the dimensional stability of wood. Thus, a combination of complexation and hydrophobization is expected to enhance the efficiency of copper-based biocides. In this study, hydrophobic hybrid silica gel containing copper amine complexes (MACu) was prepared through an in situ sol-gel process in wood using methyltriethoxysilane (MTES), 3-amino-propyltriethoxysilane (APTES), and copper chloride. The resistance to growth of molds for MACu modified wood (Populus tomentosa) was measured according to ASTM D3273-16. A leaching resistance test was carried out in accordance with AWPA E11-16. The results showed that only Aspergillus niger covered the surface of untreated wood blocks and no mold grew on the MACu surface even after the leaching test. MACu xerogel and MACu wood were further characterized by SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XPS. A possible schematic diagram of the reaction mechanism was proposed to explain the high-efficiency anti-mold performance of MACu wood.

La1−xCexCoO3(x= 0, 0.2, 0.4) and La1−xCexMnO3(x= 0, 0.2) perovskite-type oxides were prepared by sol-gel process. Characterization techniques EDS, FTIR, XRD, BET, and XPS experiments were performed to survey the composition, bulk structure, and the surface properties of perovskites. The reduction behavior, thermal stability, and catalytic activity were studied by H2-TPR and catalytic performance. All synthesized samples showed well crystalline perovskite structure, 8–22 nm crystallite sizes, and SSA with 2–27 m2 g−1. The XRD results showed that the Ce substitution promoted the structural transformation for LaCoO3from rhombohedral into cubic and for LaMnO3no change in lattice geometry. Substitution with cerium (x= 0.2) showed smaller crystallite size, higher SSA, and the highest reducibility and catalytic activity for LaCoO3.

A series of complex oxide Cu1-xKxFe2O4 fibers have been prepared via a sol-gel process related electron-spinning procedure, in which x is among 0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 corresponding to the quantity of Cu2+ partial substitution by K+. The average diameter of the fiber was 500 nm. The catalytic activity of the catalysts in removal of NOx and carbon black from diesel exhaust gases were examined in detail using temperature-programmed reaction technique. The results show that after partial substitution of Cu2+ with K+, the catalytic activities have been improved. Cu0.95K0.05Fe2O4 as an optimal catalyst can significantly decrease the ignition temperature (Tig) of the PM, and has high catalytic activity on the removal of NOx.

Palladium nanoparticles stabilized by poly (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) can be synthesized by corresponding Pd(acac)2(acac = acetylacetonate) as precursor in methanol at 80°C for 2 h followed by reduction with NaBH4and immobilized onto SiO2prepared by sol-gel process under acidic conditions (HF or HCl). The PVP/Pd molar ratio is set to 6. The effect of the sol-gel catalyst on the silica morphology and texture and on Pd(0) content was investigated. The catalysts prepared (ca.2% Pd(0)/SiO2/HF andca.0,3% Pd(0)/SiO2/HCl) were characterized by TEM, FAAS, and SEM-EDS. Palladium nanoparticles supported in silica with a size 6.6 ± 1.4 nm were obtained. The catalytic activity was tested in hydrogenation of alkenes.

ABSTRACTA sol-gel process was used to synthesize potential combustion catalysts based on mixed oxides on several libraries. As mixed oxides a variety of doped Zr-Al-oxides and Ce-oxides were prepared. The catalytic activity of the materials was tested with the combustion of i-octane, n-butane and methane in synthetic air. Several Pt- and Rh-containing sol-gel materials showed effective methane combustion already at 60 °C under rich conditions and at 200 °C under lean conditions. Several noble metal free doped CeO2 catalysts combusted methane already at 300 °C under lean conditions. Combustion of i-octane was catalysed already at 125 °C. The most active catalysts were synthesized conventionally, characterized and catalytic activity was confirmed in a regular gas phase flow reactor.

ABSTRACTThe sol-gel process has been used to incorporate a conjugated polymer, polyaniline, in silica gel. The emeraldine base form of the polymer is partially solubility in aprotic polar solvents which are compatible with the sol. The effect of sol environment on the emeraldine base form of polyaniline was investigated. The soluble emeraldine base form is maintained at pH ≥ 2.4 enabling good optical quality gels to be synthesized. The type of alkoxysilane and the water ratio used in preparing the sol influence the solubility of the emeraldine base.
