ABSTRACTThe sol-gel process has been used to incorporate a conjugated polymer, polyaniline, in silica gel. The emeraldine base form of the polymer is partially solubility in aprotic polar solvents which are compatible with the sol. The effect of sol environment on the emeraldine base form of polyaniline was investigated. The soluble emeraldine base form is maintained at pH ≥ 2.4 enabling good optical quality gels to be synthesized. The type of alkoxysilane and the water ratio used in preparing the sol influence the solubility of the emeraldine base.

Complexation copper with amine provides an effective strategy for fixation copper in wood, while hydrophobic modification improves the dimensional stability of wood. Thus, a combination of complexation and hydrophobization is expected to enhance the efficiency of copper-based biocides. In this study, hydrophobic hybrid silica gel containing copper amine complexes (MACu) was prepared through an in situ sol-gel process in wood using methyltriethoxysilane (MTES), 3-amino-propyltriethoxysilane (APTES), and copper chloride. The resistance to growth of molds for MACu modified wood (Populus tomentosa) was measured according to ASTM D3273-16. A leaching resistance test was carried out in accordance with AWPA E11-16. The results showed that only Aspergillus niger covered the surface of untreated wood blocks and no mold grew on the MACu surface even after the leaching test. MACu xerogel and MACu wood were further characterized by SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XPS. A possible schematic diagram of the reaction mechanism was proposed to explain the high-efficiency anti-mold performance of MACu wood.

ABSTRACTA nanocomposite of clusters of gold atoms in a silica gel matrix has been prepared by the sol-gel technique through reduction of gold chloride. This composite was fabricated to explore novel techniques for materialsengineering new high dielectric strength substances for capacitor applications. The gold islands amidst the silica gel sea are materials-designed to utilize the percolation threshhold phenomenon to create a peak in the dielectricconstant as a function of optimal topology. Experimental results indicate an average dielectric constant of the order of 5000 at 1 kHz, and a maximum versus temperature at ∼ −100°C. Electron microscope and microprobe analysis indicate ellipsoidal Au particles or clusters of a dimension ranging from a hundred angstroms to several thousand angstroms.

Novel micro-composites from Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and silica were prepared using sol-gel technique. Different catalysts were used for the in-situ generation of silica network from tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) in the PVC matrix. Thin transparent films containing various proportions of silica in PVC were cast by the solvent elution technique. Mechanical properties of these films were studied. The results showed an increase in the value of Young's modulus and strain at rupture by the addition of small amount of silica in PVC. However, the stress at yields point and stress at rupture decreased with the addition of silica contents. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDAX) studies were also performed on these samples.

ABSTRACTMultifunctional acrylate alkoxysilanes synthesized from commercial acrylate compounds and mercapto-substituted alkoxysilanes were used as precursors in the development of materials for various purposes. The alkoxysilyl groups are available for the construction of an inorganic backbone by the sol-gel process, and the acrylate groups for building an organic polymeric matrix by thermal or photochemical curing.Tailoring the material properties is achieved by use of specific molecular structures and functionalities within the monomeric compounds. Linear and branched structural units influence the mechanical properties (modulus of elasticity, abrasion resistance, flexural strength). Rapidly UV-cured materials have been prepared for use as primary or secondary coatings for silica optical fibres with improved adhesion under humid conditions. Further organic modification results in polymers which can be used for manufacturing lenses of high optical quality. Preliminary attempts to draw fibres have also been successful.

Modification of silica gel with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane through sol-gel technique producing amino-silica hybrid (HAS) and mercapto-silica hybrid (HMS), respectively, has been carried out using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as silica source. The adsorbents were characterized using infrared spectroscopy (IR), and X-ray energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDX). Adsorption of Cd(II) individually as well as its binary mixture with Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) in solution was performed in a batch system. Adsorption capacities of Cd(II) ion on adsorbent of silica gel (SG), HAS, and HMS are 86.7, 256.4 and 319.5 μmol/g with the adsorption energies are 24.60, 22.61 and 23.15 kJ/mol, respectively. Selectivity coefficient (α) of Cd(II) ion toward combination of Cd(II)/Ni(II), Cd(II)/Cu(II), and Cd(II)/Zn(II) ions on HAS adsorbent is relatively smaller than those on HMS adsorbent which has α > 1.   Keywords: adsorption, amino-silica hybrid, mercapto-silica

ABSTRACTOptical quality radial gradient-index (GRIN) glass can be made by first leaching a TiO2-Al2O3-SiO2 gel in aqueous sulfuric acid solution, then drying and firing the gel. In this paper, we present details of a study on the reproducible production of GRIN glasses by this sol-gel process. Physical and optical data on the intermediate gels and resulting gradient-index glass will be discussed.
