In situ moisture profiles are examined, in two soils of clay texture and in a loam, for the condition of equilibrium about a water table. In addition, moisture profiles during periods of approximately steady upward flow are examined in one of the soils of clay texture. Equilibrium moisture profiles in the clay soils are typical of the 'hydric' profiles which have been predicted for swelling materials. Upward water movement occurs against the moisture gradient. The equilibrium profile in the loam is typical of those observed for non-swelling materials.

Clod crushing is a principal problem with soils of high clay content. Therefore, there is a need for determining the conditions for clod breaking and clod crushing. The objective of the work was to develop a special purpose tool for single clod breaking both by rigid support of the clod and by a single clod supported by soil and to develop a machine for clod crushing. Furthermore, the purpose was to determine the relationship between the specific energy requirement for clod crushing in the function of soil plasticity and the soil moisture content by the means of the developed tool and machine. The main result of the experiments is summarized in a 3D diagram where the specific energy requirement for soil clod crushing is given in the function of the moisture content and the plasticity index for different clay soils.

Abstract Variable diffusivity and volume of the grains are taken into account in the diffusion model that describes mass transfer in soybean hydration. The variable space grid method (VSGM) was used to consider the increase in grain size, and the diffusivity was considered an exponential function of the moisture content. An equation for the behavior of the grain radius as a function of time was obtained by global mass balance over the soybean grain and the differential equation considered that the increase in radius happens due to the influence of the convective and diffusive fluxes at the surface of the grains. The model was solved by an explicit numerical scheme which presented satisfactory results. The results showed the behavior of moisture profiles obtained as a function of time and radial position and also showed how the grain radius increased with time and changed the solution domain of the diffusion equation.
