Purpose – This paper aims to provide a European perspective on the collaborative robot business and to consider the factors governing future market development. Design/methodology/approach – Following an introduction, this first describes the collaborative robots launched recently by European manufacturers and their applications. It then discusses major European research activities and finally considers the factors stimulating the market. Findings – This article shows that collaborative robots are being commercialised by the major European robot manufacturers as well as by several smaller specialists. Although most have low payload capacities they are inexpensive and offer a number of operational benefits, making them well suited to a range of existing and emerging applications. Europe has a strong research base and several EU-funded programmes aim to stimulate collaborative robot development and use. Rapid market development is anticipated, driven in the main by applications in electronic product manufacture and assembly; new applications in the automotive industry; uses by small to medium-sized manufacturers; and companies seeking robots to support agile production methods. Originality/value – This paper provides a timely review of the rapidly developing European collaborative robot industry.

The chapter provides a timely review of the various properties of nonmaterial and their applications into environmental compartments. An extensive variety of poisonous chemicals is discharged into the environment because of globalization and industrialization. The dimensional, compositional, geometric, and structural properties are fundamental to convey usefulness of the nanomaterials. The controlled sizes and shapes of nanoparticles are anticipated to yield unique catalytic, electrochemical, and photochemical properties. The electrochemical properties of monolayer-functional metal nanoparticles are expected to be controlled by the particle sizes. Metal nanomaterials have interesting optical properties due to strong surface plasmon absorption and field enhancement effects; metal oxides lack visible absorption due to very large bandgap. Nanocomposites have complex optical properties. Nanomaterials present gigantic advantages on diverse applications, catalysis, imaging, biotechnological, and sensor applications due to their improved properties.

This study presents a narrative literature review to provide an overview in an attempt to find common ground, identify potential gaps, and provide suggestions for academia and tourism managers. Real-time sensing and modeling of the human body, especially the hands, is an important research endeavor for various applicative purposes such as in natural human computer interactions. Hand pose estimation is a big academic and technical challenge due to the complex structure and dexterous movement of human hands. Boosted by advancements from both hardware and artificial intelligence, various prototypes of data gloves and computer-vision-based methods have been proposed for accurate and rapid hand pose estimation in recent years. However, existing reviews either focused on data gloves or on vision methods or were even based on a particular type of camera, such as the depth camera. The purpose of this survey is to conduct a comprehensive and timely review of recent research advances in sensor-based hand pose estimation, including wearable and vision-based solutions. Hand kinematic models are firstly discussed. An in-depth review is conducted on data gloves and vision-based sensor systems with corresponding modeling methods. Particularly, this review also discusses deep-learning-based methods, which are very promising in hand pose estimation. Moreover, the advantages and drawbacks of the current hand gesture estimation methods, the applicative scope, and related challenges are also discussed.

AbstractThe discovery of gravity waves from the mergers of black hole binaries has focused the astronomical community on the high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) as the potential progenitors of close pairs of compact stars. This symposium gathered experts in observational and theoretical work for a very timely review of our understanding of the processes that drive the X-ray luminosity of the diverse kinds of binaries and what evolutionary stages are revealed in the observed cases. Here I offer a condensed summary of some of the results about massive star properties, the observational categories of HMXBs, their accretion processes, their numbers in the Milky Way and other galaxies, and how they may be related to the compact binaries that merge in a burst of gravity waves.

SummaryBackground: Electronic referral (eReferral) from community into public secondary healthcare services was introduced to 30 referring general medical practices and 28 hospital based services in late 2007.Objectives: To measure the extent of uptake of eReferral and its association with changes in referral processing.Methods: Analysis of transactional data from the eReferral message service and the patient information management system of the affected hospital; interview of clinical, operational and management stakeholders.Results: eReferral use rose steadily to 1000 transactions per month in 2008, thereafter showing moderate growth to 1200 per month in 2010. Rate of eReferral from the community in 2010 is estimated at 56% of total referrals to the hospital from general practice, and as 71% of referrals from those having done at least one referral electronically. Referral latency from letter date to hospital triage improves significantly from 2007 to 2009 (p<0.001), from a paper referral median of 8 days (inter-quartile range, IQR: 4–14) in 2007 to an eReferral median of 5 days (IQR: 2–9) and paper referral median of 6 days (IQR: 2–12) in 2009. Specialists upgrade the referrer-assigned eReferral priority in 19.2% of cases and downgrade it 18.6% of the time. Clinical users appreciate improvement of referral visibility (status and content access); however, both general practitioners and specialists point out system usability issues.Discussion: With eReferrals, a referral’s status can be checked, and its content read, by any authorized user at any time. The period of eReferral uptake was associated with significant speed-up in referral processing without changes in staffing levels. The eReferral system provides a foundation for further innovation in the community-secondary interface, such as electronic decision support and shared care planning systems.Conclusions: We observed substantial rapid voluntary uptake of eReferrals associated with faster, more reliable and more transparent referral processing.
