This quality improvement study focused on developing an understanding of factors influencing the ability of prenatal genetics counsellors (GCs) to efficiently see patients during the COVID-19 pandemic and strategies to improve their workflow using techniques from human factors and design. The demand for Prenatal Genetics Clinics is rising which has increased pressure on GCs to become more efficient. Genetics counsellors can improve access to their services by reducing the time spent on the tasks performed before and after a genetic counselling encounter, thereby increasing the number of patients they see. We were limited to certain methods to understand the differences in workflow before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study involved a literature review, archival analysis of workflow studies conducted before the pandemic, stakeholder meetings and mapping, a brainstorming session, as well as documenting time-on-task in a diary and naturalistic observation sessions. A task analysis was developed to identify factors influencing efficiency related to the design of the space, processes and the use of artefacts. Virtual and on-site workflows show that GCs spend at least half of their time on tasks before and/or after the patient’s appointment. Looking at potential inefficiencies or bottlenecks in workflow formed the development of a strategic plan for improving GC workflows at the prenatal Genetics Clinic. Improvements suggested through this analysis were constrained to support the current number of healthcare providers working within the existing space configuration.

Human factors specialists need to assess products and situations to determine a level of dangerousness. This paper outlines the factors of such an analysis and suggests a procedure to use. Aspects of human behavior, environmental conditions, potential for encountering sources of energy and good manufacturing practice are addressed. The key elements of human capability and expectation are outlined. Products and activities that have inherent danger are discussed. Human errors and the factors influencing dangerous situations are discussed.

Whether or not judges use comparative arguments is determined by a complex interplay of a number of legal and extra-legal factors within each legal system. The chapter introduces and discusses a number of such factors, which influence the likelihood of the use of comparative reasoning within judicial decision-making at the national level. The factors are grouped into four areas: general, institutional, procedural, and human factors. The closing two sections of this chapter discuss two specific, domain-dependent issues: first, whether it makes any difference, for the likelihood of the use of comparative reasoning, if the dispute at hand pertains to the area of private law or public law. Secondly, the final section addresses the same question with respect to the area of constitutional adjudication and human rights.

Remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPASs) are tools for military organizations to help remove humans from dangerous situations, and permit operations in severe and inhospitable environments. To support the procurement of an RPAS fleet under Canada’s Strong, Secure, Engaged 2017 defence policy, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) under the RCAF Joint Unmanned Surveillance and Target Acquisition System (JUSTAS) project (subsequently replaced by the RCAF RPAS project) funded Defence Research and Development Canada – Toronto Research Centre to conduct a preliminary investigation of human factors (HF) issues relating to the performance of the crew in the ground control station (GCS) to control a RPAS. This paper presents a review of the RCAF research program conducted between 2014 and 2017 that discusses HF issues in RPAS operations and how training is associated with the HF attributes of decision making, skills/knowledge, and mission preparation. Also, this paper presents a training needs analysis methodology and analysis that identified essential RPAS crew competencies (expressed as the knowledge, skills, and abilities required by each crew member to perform their respective tasks). Finally, this paper discusses work that investigated experimentation and evaluation capabilities to support RPAS operator training and GCS airworthiness certification.

The proliferation of computer systems in recent years has prompted a growing concern about the human factors of interface design. Industrial and military organizations have responded by supporting studies in user-computer interaction and, more recently, products which might aid in the design of interfaces. One type of design aid which attempts to make findings of user-computer interface (UCI) research available to the system designer is the interface design guidelines document. This paper reviews literature about the design process and how design guidelines or standards might fit into that activity. Suggestions are offered about where future research and development might be directed in order to enhance the use of guidelines in the interface design process and so enhance the final product as well.
