We examined the utility of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory–2–Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) underreporting Validity Scales in a simulation design with a sample of 257 undergraduate college students. Extending past research by Sellbom and Bagby, we added a manipulation check to determine whether individuals complied with instructions to underreport and examined the impact of underreporting on all of the MMPI-2-RF substantive scales. Results indicated that individuals who complied with instructions to underreport produced statistically significantly and meaningfully higher scores on the MMPI-2-RF underreporting Validity Scales (Uncommon Virtues [L-r] and Adjustment Validity [K-r]) when compared with those who received standard instructions and with individuals who did not comply with instructions to underreport. Moreover, in comparisons with both groups, participants who complied with instructions to underreport had lower scores on the majority of the substantive scales. L-r and K-r added incremental predictive utility (in reference to one another) in differentiating individuals who underreported from individuals who were given standard instructions.

Abstract: New students usually have to deal with many problems, either social interaction or in the process of study to gain optimal academic outcomes. These problems belong to the adaptation process that can influence the development of one’s personality and be a trigger to mental health disturbances. This study aimed to obtain the MMPI-2 clinical and subclinical scale profile of the Medical college students 2013/2014 at the Medical Faculty Unsrat Manado. This was a descriptive study with a cross sectional design. A univarian analysis using Microsoft Excel software was used for the data analysis. There were 101 from 126 students that participated in this study. The results showed percentages of the 3 highest clinical scales: Si (28,71%), D (15,84%), and Sc (8,91%). In each clinical scale, the highest percentage belonged to female students of North Sulawesi. In the Si and D clinical scales, the highest percentages were those with moderate national exam results, and in Sc the highest percentage were those with average moderate national exam results. Dominant outcomes from the subclinical scale based on the clinical scale’s scores were Si1: 27 people, Si2: 15 people, D1 and D4: 14 people. Conclusion: The MMPI-2 profile of the medical students of the Medical Faculty University of Sam Ratulangi Manado 2013-2014 showed that the most dominant clinical scale was Si, and the most dominant subclinical scale was Si1.Keywords: College students, profile, clinical scale, subclinical, MMPI-2.Abstrak: Mahasiswa yang memasuki perguruan tinggi biasanya diperhadapkan dengan masalah-masalah baik dalam interaksi sosial maupun dalam tanggung jawab untuk memperoleh hasil akademis yang optimal.

In recent years, several studies have addressed the issue of positive self-presentation bias in assessing parents involved in postdivorce child custody litigations. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) is widely used in forensic assessments and is able to evaluate positive self-presentation through its Superlative Self-Presentation S scale. We investigated the existence of a gender effect on positive self-presentation bias in an Italian sample of parents involved in court evaluation. Participants were 391 divorced parents who completed the full 567-item Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 during child custody evaluations ordered by several Italian courts between 2006 and 2010. Our analysis considered the S scale along with the basic clinical scales. North-American studies had shown no gender differences in child custody litigations. Differently, our results showed a significantly higher tendency toward “faking-good” profiles on the MMPI-2 among Italian women as compared to men and as compared to the normative Italian female population. Cultural and social factors could account for these differences.
