Orientational order parameter of magnetically aligned liquid crystal elastomer particles suspended in a cured silicone matrix is assessed using 2H-NMR spectroscopy. Obtained results correspond well with the composite's thermomechanical response.

AbstractOptical properties of a nematic liquid crystal with small refractive index and small birefringence were studied. The ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices and birefringence were measured as functions of temperature by using an Abbe refractometer and wedge nematic cells. From values of these indices the nematic orientational order parameter was calculated by using several methods and corresponding mathematical models. Kuczyński et al. method was found to be suitable for determining the order parameter also for materials featuring small ordinary refractive index, with unknown density.

AbstractA survey of various methods to measure the elastic constants Ki of nematic liquid crystals is given. To determine K1, K3 and the anisotropy of the diamagnetic susceptibility Δx of two members of the 5n-hexyl-2-[4n-alkyloxy-phenyl]-pyrimidines and a mixture of both, we used a combined electromagneto- optical method, consisting in independent measurements of the optical phase difference in electric and magnetic fields acting on the same cell. The temperature dependence of the K1- and K3-values for these phenylpyrimidines can be explained by common theories. The Δx data show the same temperature dependence as the values of the orientational order parameter S obtained by 1H-NMR.

The photophysical properties of polymer-dispersed liquid crystal systems, containing naphthalimide dye as fluorescent units are reported. Investigations have been carried out on some 1,8- naphtalimide derivatives both in isotropic and anisotropic media, and their photophysal properties have been described. The orientational order parameters of the dyes in nematic liquid crystal ZLI 1840 have been determined. The photostability of the dye/liquid crystal systems has been investigated and the effect that the substituents in the naphthalimide structure have upon the orientation of the dye was discussed.

If a spontaneous orientation order appears in the liquid crystal- droplets system of a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC), and the order parameter satisfies Ś = <P¬2 (cos> ≠ 0, then the corresponding state is called as the super-liquid-crystal (SLC).It is suggested that by reforming the ordinary PDLC making-scheme assumed SLC state may be observed in experiments.

Rod-like and sheet-like nano-particles made of desoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) fabricated by the DNA origami method (base sequence-controlled self-organized folding of DNA) are dispersed in a lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal made of an aqueous solution of disodium cromoglycate. The respective liquid crystalline nanodispersions are doped with a dichroic fluorescent dye and their orientational order parameter is studied by means of polarized fluorescence spectroscopy. The presence of the nano-particles is found to slightly reduce the orientational order parameter of the nematic mesophase. Nano-rods with a large length/width ratio tend to preserve the orientational order, while more compact stiff nano-rods and especially nano-sheets reduce the order parameter to a larger extent. In spite of the difference between the sizes of the DNA nano-particles and the rod-like columnar aggregates forming the liquid crystal, a similarity between the shapes of the former and the latter seems to be better compatible with the orientational order of the liquid crystal.

We report on the random disorder effect of MCM-41 on the order of the 3β-DOXYL-5α-cholestane (CLS) spin probe in the ZLI-4792 liquid crystal using Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) technique. In different MCM-41 concentrations, the temperature dependence of the director orientational order parameter,
