Real-time simulation is an increasingly popular tool for product development and research in power systems. However, commercial simulators are still quite exclusive due to their costs and they face problems in bridging the gap between two common types of power system simulation, conventional phasor based, and electromagnetic transient simulation. This work describes recent improvements to the open source real-time simulator DPsim to address increasingly important use cases that involve power electronics that are connected to the electrical grid and increasing grid sizes. New power electronic models have been developed and integrated into the DPsim simulator together with techniques to decouple the system solution, which facilitate parallelization. The results show that the dynamic phasors in DPsim, which result from shifted frequency analysis, allow the user to combine the characteristics of conventional phasor and electromagnetic transient simulation. Besides, simulation speed up techniques that are known from the electromagnetic domain and new techniques, specific to dynamic phasors, significantly improve the performance. It demonstrates the advantages of dynamic phasor simulation for future power systems and the applicability of this concept to large scale scenarios.

<p>This paper introduces a novel transient simulation scheme and its extension for stability analysis of distribution systems with converter-based distributed generation. Efficiency and accuracy of the simulation scheme with extension are investigated. It is demonstrated that millisecond-level step sizes are applicable to efficient electromagnetic transient simulation for stability analysis of unbalanced power systems while maintaining satisfactory accuracy. The paper also supports the extension of the simulation scheme by showing that the extension has only an insignificant impact on the accuracy but significantly enhances the efficiency.<br></p><p><br></p><p></p><p>This paper has been accepted by the 2021 IEEE IAS Annual Meeting.</p><p></p>

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) can alleviate the unstable effects of intermittent renewable energy systems, such as solar and wind power systems. In addition, a BESS can level the load of the existing utility grid. The penetration rate of this type of system is expected to increase in the future power grid, i.e., the microgrid. In this paper, a modeling technique is proposed that allows users to customize the photovoltaic (PV) battery hybrid systems. A dynamic power system computer-aided design/electromagnetic transients including DC system (PSCAD/EMTDC) model of a PV battery hybrid system is presented in this paper. Dynamic modeling of PV arrays, BESS, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms, and bidirectional converters are provided as well. The PV model, battery model, and MPPT control model are designed using a user-defined model (UDM) for custom electromagnetic transient simulation. A control method for stabilizing the output of the PV battery hybrid system is proposed. Finally, a PSCAD/EMTDC simulation is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the operating algorithm.
