We present the results of a search for globular clusters in the surroundings of 15 low surface brightness dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster, on CCD images in the C and T1 bands. Globular cluster candidates show a clear bimodal color distribution. Their surface density distribution shows no concentration towards the respective dwarf galaxies but it does show concentration towards the center of the Fornax cluster. We suggest that the potential globular clusters might not be bound to the dwarf galaxies, but might instead belong to the intra-cluster medium.

This paper deals with the central stars of two large, low-surface-brightness planetary nebulae: V605 Aquilae, central star of Abell 58, and 0950+139, central star of EGB 6. Both of these nuclei are associated with compact emission-line nebulosities, which are unresolved from the ground. We obtained images with the Faint Object Camera (FOC) on the Hubble Space Telescope of both objects, in order to determine the nature of the compact nebulae.

AbstractOver the past several years, our research group has been measuring proper motions for nearby dwarf satellite galaxies using data taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. In order to measure proper motions with an expected size of several tens of milliarcseconds per century using a time baseline of 2-4 years, our work required that positions of stars and QSOs be measured to an accuracy of ~0.25 mas (~0.005 pixel). This contribution reviews the scientific justification of this work and our methodology. It concludes with a few general results and future directions.

AbstractWe present initial results of a study of low surface brightness dwarf galaxies within galaxy clusters at z ≤ .03 as part of our program to determine the clustering properties, luminosity functions, and morphologies of dwarf galaxies in a wider range of cluster environments. In addition to deep V-band images covering up to 1 deg2 in each of 13 different clusters, we have obtained velocities from fiber spectroscopy for 235 galaxies in A3526. In A3526, we find a drop in cluster galaxy counts at intermediate magnitudes which is supported by our spectroscopic results.

ABSTRACT We report on the white dwarf (WD) cooling sequence of the old globular cluster NGC 6752, which is chemically complex and hosts a blue horizontal branch. This is one of the last globular cluster WD cooling sequences accessible to imaging by the Hubble Space Telescope. Our photometry and completeness tests show that we have reached the peak of the luminosity function of the WD cooling sequence, at a magnitude mF606W  = 29.4 ± 0.1, which is consistent with a formal age of ∼14 Gyr. This age is also consistent with the age from fits to the main-sequence turn-off (13–14 Gyr), reinforcing our conclusion that we observe the expected accumulation of WDs along the cooling sequence.
