The environmental and resource constraints on economic growth are increasingly evident. China urgently needs to reshape its economic growth momentum. The increase in green total factor productivity is particularly necessary for the growth of the quantity and quality of the economy. This paper selects the provincial panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2001 to 2015, and establishes a panel exchangeable errors model to analyze the impact of eight indicators on green total factor productivity (GTFP) and verifies its effectiveness. Empirical analysis shows that inter-provincial government competition, environmental regulation, energy consumption, and capital stock have a significant impact on green total factor productivity. The influence of foreign direct investment, industrial structure, and industrialization level on the total factor productivity of green is not significant. Therefore, the government should adopt suitable, flexible and diverse environmental regulation policies, promote energy-saving emission reduction and technology innovations through policies such as taxes and subsidies, strengthen the linkage mechanism between industrial structure upgrading and energy efficiency, to increase green total factor productivity.

Under the low-carbon background, with the aid of the Malmquist–Luenberger SBM (Slack-based Measure) model of unexpected output, the green total factor productivity (GTFP) of the logistics industry in Jiangsu Province, China, was measured and decomposed in this study based on the reality and experience of logistics industry development in 13 cities in three regions of Jiangsu Province in the years 2006–2018 by taking resource consumption into the input system and discharged pollutants into the output system. It is concluded that the environmental regulation (ER) has a significant positive effect on the growth of the GTFP of the logistics industry, and technological progress has become an important endogenous force that promotes the GTFP of the logistics industry in Jiangsu Province. On this basis, a dynamic GMM (Generalized method of moment) model and a Tobit model were constructed to further study the possible temporal and spatial effects of ER on the GTFP of the logistics industry. The research results reveal that the ER can exert both promoting and inhibitory effects on the GTFP of the logistics industry, and there is a temporal turning point for the effects. Besides, the effects notably differ spatially and temporally. Finally, some policies and advice for the green sustainable development of the logistics industry were proposed. For example, the government and enterprises should pay attention to the green and efficient development of the logistics industry and dynamically adjust the ER methods. They should consider the greening of both forward logistics links and reverse logistics system in the supply chain.

This paper is based on the input-output panel data of logistics industry in 30 provinces and regions in China from 2005 to 2017, using nonparametric DEA model to evaluate the green total factor productivity of logistics industry, and build a panel threshold model to empirically test the nonlinear impact of environmental egulation. It is found that environmental regulation has a double threshold effect on green total factor productivity of logistics industry, the estimated threshold values are 89.85 and 211.27 respectively; when environmental regulation is at a low level below 89.85, environmental regulation has a positive effect of 2.09% on green total factor productivity of logistics industry, when environmental regulation is in the intermediate stage of 89.85 to 211.27, environmental regulation has a positive improvement effect of 6.41% on green total factor productivity of logistics industry; when environmental regulation is at a higher level than 211.27, environmental regulation has a negative inhibitory effect of 1.57% on green total factor productivity of logistics industry. Based on the empirical conclusion, this paper puts forward: First, using the performance assessment as the baton to urge the local government to establish an effective environmental regulation system; second, the government should plan to guide the green transformation and upgrading of the logistics industry to avoid “one size fits all” environmental regulation.

The aim of this paper is to find a new answer to an old question “Is economic freedom good or not for economies?” which was refreshed after the Global Financial Crisis of 2008. For this purpose, the relationship between economic freedom and economic growth, and the relationship between economic freedom and total factor productivity in OECD countries were investigated by using panel data for the period of 1995-2009. Study employed the recently developed cointegration test by Westerlund (2007) and the estimation technique by Bai and Kao (2006) which account for cross-sectional dependence that is an important problem in the panel data studies. Although no significant relationship found between economic freedom and total factor productivity, cointegration analysis revealed that economic freedom matters for economic growth in OECD countries in the long-run, and estimation results showed that direction of the impact is negative.

This article investigates the determinants of economic growth and also seeks to determine whether or not the impact of total factor productivity (TFP) changes with respect to the level of development for selected countries. In this manner, the present study examines the impact of gross fixed capital formation, employed labour and the TFP of G-7, G-12 and G-20 countries on real GDP per capita using second-generation panel data analyses over the period 1992–2014. The results reveal that TFP has a greater impact on economic growth than fixed capital formation and employed labour for all country groups. Furthermore, the impact of TFP on economic growth was found to be greater for developed countries than for emerging countries. JEL Classification: C21, C22, C23

Abstract The relationship between environmental regulation and enterprises' total factor productivity (TFP) has been a hot topic in the field of environmental economics, but the conclusions are still mixed. Employing a sample of 14,110 firm-year observations in China from 2010 to 2018, our research explores whether and when environmental regulation could trigger firms, to enhance TFP. The available evidence leads us to cautiously conclude that: 1) Environmental regulation notably improves enterprises' TFP, the conclusion still holds after a series of robustness tests. 2) Enterprises' bargaining power significantly weakens the influence of environmental regulation on enterprises' TFP. 3) Compared with non-state-owned enterprises and non-heavy-polluting industries, environmental regulation has a greater impact on state-owned enterprises and heavy-polluting industries; higher executive compensation does not motivate firms to improve TFP; compared with enterprises headquartered in non-provincial capital cities, environmental regulation has a greater impact on enterprises' TFP in provincial capital cities. Overall, the findings of our research are extremely relevant for the government, investor, and enterprise's manager, this paper provides micro-firm-level evidence for the Porter hypothesis in practice in China.

Against the background of carbon peaking and carbon neutralization, green technology innovation plays an important role in promoting the energy total factor productivity (TFP). This study verifies the impact of green technology innovation on energy TFP in a complete sample and the subsamples by region, by constructing a panel threshold model, and analyzes its influence mechanism on the basis of the mediating effect test based on annual provincial data of mainland China from 2005 to 2018. The empirical results reveal the following: first, with the level of economic development as the threshold variable, there is a threshold effect in the impact of green technology innovation on the energy TFP; second, green technology innovation has an impact on the energy TFP through industrial structure upgrading; that is, industrial structure has a mediating effect in the influence mechanism; and third, there is heterogeneity in the impact of green technology innovation on the energy TFP among different regions in China, and the threshold effect only exists in the western region, since the central and eastern regions have crossed a certain developmental stage.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of human capital (HC), intellectual property rights (IPRs) and research and development (R&D) expenditures on total factor productivity (TFP), which leads to economic growth. Design/methodology/approach The panel data technique is used on a sample of 16 countries categorized into two groups, namely Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) and Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries and, in order to make a comparison for the time period of 2007–2015, the researchers used a fixed effect model as an estimation method for regression. Findings The results indicate that HC, IPRs and R&D expenditures appear to be statistically significant and are strong factors in determining changes in TFP and exhibit positive results in all sample sets. Moreover, IPRs alone do not accelerate growth in an economy, especially taking the case of emerging nations. Originality/value Considering the importance of CEE and BRIC countries, and inadequate research on these regions with respect to current study’s variables and techniques, the present research provides valuable insights about the importance of HC, IPR and R&D activities and their impact on TFP, which leads to economic growth. IPRs create a fertile environment for R&D activities, knowledge creation and economic development. Distinct nations can attain better economic status via HC, R&D activities, innovation, trade and FDI, although the relative significance of these channels is likely to differ across countries depending on their developmental levels.

The 14th five-year plan emphasizes the importance of marine ecology and environmental protection, and the green concept is incorporated into the high-quality development system of the marine economy. This research used the data of 11 coastal provinces and cities in China from 2006 to 2016, based on the super-efficiency slack-based measure model and global Malmquist index model. The objective was to calculate the green total factor productivity (GTFP) of the marine economy, to study the impact of the evolution of the marine industrial structure on marine economic GTFP. The study found the following: (1) in general, the upgrade of marine industrial structure promoted the growth of marine economic GTFP and presented an inverted “U” trend of initially promoting and then suppressing. Spatially, only the advancement and rationalization of industrial structure in the Yellow and Bohai Sea regions inhibited the growth of marine economic GTFP. In terms of time, the advanced marine industrial structure promoted the growth of GTFP from 2006 to 2010, whereas that of industrial structure inhibited the growth of GTFP from 2011 to 2016. (2) The GTFP of the marine economy showed an increasing trend, but the conversion rate of production technology is low. Falling into the “efficiency trap” of highly advanced technology input and low-efficiency technology output should be avoided. (3) Affected by the mismatch of regional resources or industrial structure, government intervention showed an “opposite” mechanism in areas with different marine economic strengths. Government intervention in areas with higher marine economic strength was conducive to GTFP growth, whereas government intervention in areas with weaker marine economic strength would hinder GTFP growth.

In terms of the development of the manufacturing industry, the Chinese government has carried out environmental regulations and set up production standards for related industries. This is an environmentally-friendly and economic action, which is also in line with the requirements of building a green economy for China. Meanwhile, whether from the micro regulatory measures or the macro government policies, carbon emission is an inevitable problem in the study of environmental problems. This paper will explore the impact of environmental regulation on the green economy based on carbon emissions and study the optimal environment regulation intensity that relates to a direct carbon footprint under the maximum green economic benefits. A SBM-MALMQUIST model is established to measure the green total factor productivity according to 27 Chinese manufacturing industries through the MAXDEA software. It is found that the intensity of environmental regulation has a significant impact on green total factor productivity, and direct carbon footprint also exhibits a partial intermediary effect, participating in the mechanism that affects green total factor productivity. Combined with the industrial characteristics and the above research results, this paper puts forward the adjustment strategy of reasonable environmental regulation for the manufacturing industry, which conforms to the national policy guidance, and will be beneficial in promoting the economic development of the green manufacturing industry.

A comparison between countries shows that there is a difference in terms of economic growth achievement across nations. This difference is due to the contribution of capital growth, labor, and total factor productivity (TFP). Although the use of capital and labor plays a vital role in the production, the contribution of TFP growth is also indispensable, as it saves production costs. Nevertheless, in 1995-2000, most countries have experienced a negative growth of TFP in which can affect its contribution to economic growth. Therefore, the focal point of this study is to analyze the impact of TFP growth shock on economic growth in selected ASEAN+3 countries (i.e., Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, South Korea, and Japan), using the data set from 1981 to 2014. The study employed the panel vector autoregression (PVAR) method in analyzing the propagation of the shocks through impulse response function and variance decomposition. The main findings revealed that TFP growth shocks have a positive impact on economic growth. Besides, the results also showed that over the next ten years, the proportion of human capital variation would be more dominant in contributing to the economic growth for the selected ASEAN+3 countries. As the surge in TFP growth had a positive impact on economic growth, this finding indicated that each country needs to allocate more expenditure in the Research and Development (R&D) activities.
