The matter of such a dangerous geological process as suffosion is briefly considered in the article. Some examples of destruction and removal of the suffusion unstable breeds on the contact with the concrete structure are given. Sone cases of vertical (downward and upward) and sloping streams in relation to a concrete construction are considered. It is proved that after the formation of the primary underground channel the suffosion process passes into the erosive one. This transition is smoothly and gradual, hidden from the immediate observation. However, the erosive process development leads to the repeated increase in the intensity of the incoherent soil destruction. In case of existence of soil removal zone, not only the large underground channel is formed, but also large cavities in the zone of contact of the concrete structure and the soil massif are formed. It quite often leads to the emergency situations. Studied the example of the Zagorsk PSPP-2 (ZPSPP-2). The development of the erosive process under the ZPSPP-2 building led to the formation of large cavities (up to 10 m) and to the general subsidence of the building of the plant and of the retaining wall 3 (RW3) on 1.17 m down.

A static frequency converter start-up control strategy for pumped-storage power unit is presented. And rotor position detecting without position sensor is realized according to voltage and magnetism equations of ideal synchronous motor mathematics model. The mechanism and implementation method of initial rotor position determination and rotor position estimation under low frequency without position sensor are expounded and validated by simulations. Based on the mentioned control strategy, first set of a static frequency converter start-up device in China for large-scale pumped-storage unit is developed, which is applied to start-up control test in the 90 MW generator/motor of Panjiakou Pumped-storage Power Plant. Test results show that rotor position detecting, pulse commutation, natural commutation, and unit synchronous procedure control of static start-up are all proved. The outcomes have been applied in running equipment, which proves the feasibility of mentioned method.

Airborne radiometric surveys are finding increasingly wider applications in environmental mapping and monitoring. They are the most efficient tool to delimit surface contamination and to locate lost radioactive sources. To secure radiometric capability in survey and emergency situations, a new sensitive airborne system has been built that includes an airborne spectrometer with 256 channels and a sodium iodide detector with a total volume of 16.8 liters. A rack mounted PC with memory cards is used for data acquisition, with a GPS satellite navigation system for positioning. The system was calibrated with point sources using a mathematical correction to take into account the effects of gamma‐ray scattering in the ground and in the atmosphere. The calibration was complemented by high precision ground gamma spectrometry and laboratory measurements on rock samples. In Switzerland, two major research programs make use of the capabilities of airborne radiometric measurements. The first one concerns nuclear power plant monitoring. The five Swiss nuclear installations (four power plants and one research facility) and the surrounding regions of each site are surveyed annually. The project goal is to monitor the dose‐rate distribution and to provide a documented baseline database. The measurements show that all sites (with the exception of the Gösgen power plant) can be identified clearly on the maps. No artificial radioactivity that could not be explained by the Chernobyl release or earlier nuclear weapons tests was detected outside of the fenced sites of the nuclear installations. The second program aims at a better evaluation of the natural radiation level in Switzerland. The survey focused on the crystalline rocks of the Central Massifs of the Swiss Alps because of their relatively high natural radioactivity and lithological variability.

The article touches upon reliability issues of energy management systems (EMS) of marine power plants in emergency situations caused by disturbance of the working media consumption and their subsequent recovery. The mathematical model of processes allows to determine the nature of changes in temperature and pressure of water and lube oil in EMS systems. The requirements to the characteristics of automatic control systems of the marine power plant have been formulated. Basic provisions of the reliability theory are followed by presentation of methods of calculating reliability indices of complex technical systems. The article presents the results of the study of non-stationary modes and reliability indices. Reasonable requirements for automated control systems were obtained through the analysis of working environments and of equipment operating in non-stationary modes, non-exceedance of safety limits of marine power plant operation being taken as the admissibility criterion. Besides, there are possible special modes resulted from emergency situations caused by the power plant equipment failure. Hence, for operation and design of the analyses it is important to study changes of working media in the circulation systems, which resulted from the failure of the pumps. Basic circuit of lubrication and cooling systems of the ship diesel power plants has been approved as recommended by the company "MAN B&W" for slow speed diesel engines standard series MC. Among the recommended schemes there was approved the scheme of the main engine with an autonomous cooling circuit. Schematic diagram of energy systems of a diesel power plant has been made under recommendations of the engine developer. Specifications of the component parts of the ship diesel power plant have been taken as standard for manufactured machinery. A low running L90MC-C four-cylinder main engine manufactured by "MAN B&W" was chosen as a research sample. A mathematical model, as applied to the given problem, consists of 10 algebraic equations for nonsteady working media consumption and 18 differential equations for nonsteady heat transfer in heat exchangers, as well as equations for transport delay in the lubrication systems of internal combustion engines.

This work is within the scope of set of consultancy studies made for Portuguese islands. It focuses on the integration of Pumped Storage Power in isolated islands. The paper starts to address several power systems circumstances about two Portuguese islands on the energetic level. For each of these islands, an independent examination of the conditions to install a reversible hydro power plant is accomplished. Therefore, the energy volume to be stored due to excess of renewable generation and the ideal power and number of the pumps and turbines to be installed were identified and evaluated for the sake of using the produced energy surplus as to be pumped and later generated. The paper enhances the importance of storing energy in the operation of isolated and small systems with considerable amount of intermittent power resources as well as the conditions for the viability of installing new exploitations of this kind.
