Electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) is widely used in many large equipment drives because of its strong overload capacity, high efficiency, and adjustable power factor. The research and development of a high-performance EESM control system can realize the high combination of energy-saving speed regulation and green environmental protection and has a high social effect and economic value. In this paper, the signal injection method is used to obtain the initial rotor position information of EESM. Sliding Fourier transform is used to improve the initial position angle detection method based on the rotor signal injection method, and the improved method is compared with the traditional voltage integration method. Rotor high-frequency signal injection method was used to detect the rotor position information of the motor during operation, and the influence of the damping winding on the rotor signal injection method was analyzed. On the premise that the damping winding had no influence on the method, a method of obtaining the rotor position information of EESM without a speed sensor was designed. Finally, the speed sensorless regulation system using the initial rotor position detection method is simulated, which verifies the accuracy of the proposed speed sensorless control scheme.

A method to control speed and rotor position with improved performance has been described in this research. Various techniques are taken into consideration with their detailed description. During this process new methods are also introduced with their pros and cons. The research includes a detailed study of progressive back-Emf sensing strategies. The relevant methods, which can support estimation, are the back Emf zero-crossing method, integration of voltage, and position estimation by flux and inductance. In this thesis, Extended Kalman filter is utilized for position and speed estimation. Firstly, DC voltage will be applied as an input. Extended Kalman Filter is used to perform state estimation while PID controller is employed to regulate the system state following the reference signal. The proposed solution leads to control of the ripple generated in speed and torque of Brushless DC Motor and improved performance.

In this paper, the rotor position estimation performance of the sensorless scheme for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) implemented through the injection of high-frequency square-wave voltage according to the frequency of the square-wave voltage is presented through HILS (Hardware In the Loop Simulation) experiments. An inverter using an IGBT device usually has a switching frequency of around 15 kHz. On the other hand, GaN devices that can be switched on and off at frequencies higher than 100 kHz have been recently developed, and research is being actively conducted to apply GaNs to a variable speed system. The purpose of this study is to conduct HILS experiments to analysis the rotor position estimation ability of the sensorless technique in cases where a high switching frequency was applied, such as GaN devices, with that of a system having a usual switching frequency, such as IGBT. In the HILS system used in this study, an inverter and motor model implemented with Simulink are located in a real-time simulator. A sensorless motor control method was implemented with an FPGA control board, which includes a PWM interrupt service routine of 100 kHz frequency and a harmonic injection and position detection algorithm. The HILS experiments show rotor position detection errors according to the various frequency of the harmonic voltage injected for estimating the rotor position with a PWM frequency of 100 kHz cases. According to the experimental results, good position estimation was possible not only when the harmonic of 10 kHz corresponding to 1/10 of the PWM frequency was injected, but also when the harmonic of 1 kHz corresponding to 1/100 of the PWM frequency was injected. The experiments suggest that position estimation errors decrease as the frequency of the harmonic voltage increases, and, based on the foregoing, it is thought that the application of a GaN device capable of realizing a high switching frequency in a variable speed drive system can be another advantage.

The paper present the results of work on measurement system dedicated to hardware used during wind tunnel tests, especially to servomechanisms. These devices could be applied to set specific position of control surface. Proposed system would ensure continuous monitoring of servo-rotor position and servo-motor temperature and would avoid uncontrolled change of control surface position. The application designed to monitor the operating status of the servomechanism was prepared in the LabVIEW software and was implemented on the myRIO platform. Developed test rig allow to register time histories of servo-rotor position and temperature during for different values of applied load. In the paper, test methodology were also presented. Experimental studies show that before wind tunnel tests, selected servomechanism should be tested in terms of maintaining the parameters declared by the manufacturer, especially during continuous operation. Developed measurement system can be used during wind tunnel tests, as well as only for servo-mechanism parameter testing.

Considerable vibration and acoustic noise limit the further application of Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM) due to its structural characteristics and working principle. An improved SRM model with double auxiliary slots (DAS) was proposed, in which the direction of the magnetic line of force was adjusted, and the radial magnetic density in the air gap was reduced by changing the local tooth profiles of the stator and the rotor. The effects of initial rotor position and turn-on angle and turn-off angle on radial Electromagnetic Force (EMF) and maximum torque were investigated. The results indicate the radial EMF and torque increase significantly with the advancement of the turn-on angle or the delay of the turn-off angle. In the orthogonal experimental design, initial rotor position, turn-on angle, and turn-off angle were taken as the factors, and the optimal set of parameters that minimized radial EMF was determined according to a greater output torque. In contrast to conventional SRM, the radial EMF of the SRM with DAS significantly reduces when the optimal set is applied.
