This paper analyzes the groundwater in the deep Quaternary aquifer of Eastern Croatia. These waters are collected at the Vinogradi Pumping Station (Osijek, Croatia) for the needs of public water supply. This research aimed to assess the impact of climate extremes, namely, high air temperatures and low rainfall, on the quantity and quality of groundwater. On the basis of data from the Vinogradi Pumping Station in the period 1987–2015, three extremely warm and low-water years were singled out. For these three years, the following were analyzed: climate diagrams, groundwater levels (in the piezometers closest to and farthest from the pumping station), and the quality of the affected groundwater. The results of this research indicate that the reaction of aquifers to the analyzed extreme climatic conditions for the observed period was manifested in the variation of the amplitude of groundwater levels by a maximum of 4–5 m. Considering the total thickness of the affected layers (60–80 m), this variation is not a concern from the point of view of water supply. As for the quality of groundwater, it was found to be of constant quality in its composition and was not affected by climatic extremes.

Abstract In Northwest China, the sediment concentration of the Yellow River is high. A project to investigate the operation of a pumping station shows that the flow patterns in the forebay and inlet tank are disordered, and there is sediment deposition that endangers the normal operation and safety of the pumping station. To solve this problem, the three-dimensional two-phase water-sediment flow in the forebay of the pumping station is modeled by using fluid simulation software, and diagrams of the sediment volume fraction content and vector distribution in the flow layers of different sections are obtained. Combined with the multiphase flow theory of mixtures and the realizable turbulent kinetic energy equation, the location and formation mechanism of each vortex, as well as the area and degree of sediment deposition in the forebay, are analyzed. The actual engineering and numerical simulation results are compared to verify the accuracy of the simulation. The results show that the main reason for sediment deposition is the high sediment concentration of the Yellow River, but the flow pattern disorder is affected by a specific design defect of the forebay, which makes the sediment deposition worse. The results of this study provide specific guidance and methods for the construction and transformation of the forebay of the pump station in the future; construction to weaken the return area to a certain extent can reduce the degree of sedimentation.

Water supply pumping stations are among the main energy-consuming elements in the water supply system. The energy optimization of a pumping station can significantly affect the energy consumption of a water utility. This article deals with the energy optimization of water pumping stations. The work assumes several variants of optimization of water supply pumping stations through changes in the water supply system, pressure changes in the pumping station, and modification of the number of pumps. After analyzing the network, conducting field tests, and creating a model of the water supply network, the network was calibrated in order to reproduce the existing water network as accurately as possible. Then, a variant analysis was performed, and the best optimization method for the pumping station was selected. In two variants, there was a decrease in electricity consumption; in three there, was an increase; in one, there was no change. By connecting the DMA zones and modifying the pressure in the pumping station, the energy consumption of the pumping stations was reduced. On this basis, it was found that it is possible to optimize the water pumping station by modifying the pumping station and work related to the network layout.

The article studies the starting modes of a synchronous electric drive of a pumping station, in direct and soft start of high-voltage synchronous motors of an irrigation pumping station of the first stage. The analysis of negative starting factors of synchronous machines is made on the basis of computer modeling of the research object. The simulation results are clearly shown for the main parameters of a synchronous electric drive, such as its rotation speed, stator currents, electromagnetic torque on the shaft, etc.

Utilizing the solar energy from photovoltaic panels integrated into a water pumping system to provide electricity for dispersed villages that have no access to backup systems not only reduces the electricity grid costs and environmental pollutants but also is an innovative approach in areas with sufficient solar irradiation. Therefore, identifying and studying the feasibility of stand-alone solar power plants in various locations is the first step in using this reliable source of energy. For this reason, 93 sites in the provinces of Razavi Khorasan, Northern Khorasan, and Southern Khorasan, Iran, were chosen by the renewable energy organization engineers as regions with high potential for establishing a solar water pumping station. The goals of this research were to prioritize the 93 sites and find the perfect location for the establishment of the aforementioned station. In order to investigate and prioritize these sites, a multi-criteria decision-making method, namely, TOPSIS (technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution), has been used. Therefore, the geographical locations of the sites and the weather in these provinces have been studied; consequently, 15 important and essential criteria, including slope, solar irradiation, precipitation, wind speed, relative humidity, altitude, distance from substation, distance from grid, obtainable solar energy capacity, distance from river, population, distance from city center, distance from road, average temperature, and number of dams in the vicinity of the site, have been chosen. All the aforementioned criteria have been weighted using the Shannon entropy method, and then the sites have been prioritized using the TOPSIS method. The results indicated that Sarayan, Isk, Esfadan, and Dasht Byaz in Southern Khorasan and then Beydokht 2 in Razavi Khorasan are the top five locations and Shosef in Southern Khorasan is the least favorite location for establishing a solar pumping station. In order to achieve more reliable results, sensitivity analysis was implemented.

Abstract The article deals with the possibilities of intensification of mechanical-biological wastewater treatment plant with intermittent Flexidiblok type activity with denitrification. This wastewater treatment plant is located in a municipality with more than double of the equivalent population than the capacity of the wastewater treatment plant and therefore does not meet current legislative requirements. Proposals for the intensification of the wastewater treatment plant offer the possibility of reconstructing the existing wastewater treatment plant to the required capacity or rebuilding this wastewater treatment plant to a pumping station. Part of the article is an economic-technological comparison of both proposals.

In engineering, the highest operating head of the pumping station is usually controlled to be slightly lower than the lowest saddle bottom head of the axial-flow pump. However, in the practical operation, it is found that the highest operating head of the pumping station is obviously lower than the saddle bottom head of the pump device, which leads to the reduction of the operating range of the pumping station. To investigate the difference of lowest saddle bottom head between axial flow pump and axial flow pump device and apply it correctly, the energy performance tests of the TJ04-ZL-06 hydraulic model and its corresponding pump device were carried out to obtain the external curves, and numerical simulation was carried out to analyze and compare the internal flow field and pressure distribution. The results show that when the flow rate decreases, the first saddle-shaped region of the axial-flow pump and the saddle-shaped region of the pump device are caused by the decrease of the lift coefficient due to the increase of the attack angle between flow and blade. When the flow rate is less than 0.32Qd, the influence range of backflow in the inlet pipe is large, which leads to the high-pressure zone near the wall of the inlet pressure measurement section during the pump performance test, and hence the second saddle-shaped region of the axial-flow pump is essentially a measurement illusion. It is suggested that the inlet pressure measurement section should be set at least 4Dp away from the inlet flange of the impeller when testing the performance of the axial-flow pump under the condition of small flow rate, and the first saddle bottom head of the axial-flow pump or the saddle bottom head of the corresponding pump device can be considered as the control value of the highest head of the pumping station.
