An electrochemical version of the Corey–Winter reaction was developed giving excellent results in aqueous methanol media (MeOH/H2O (80:20) with AcOH/AcONa buffer 0.5 M as supporting electrolyte), using a reticulated vitreous carbon as cathode in a divided cell. The electrochemical version is much more environmentally friendly than the classical reaction, where a large excess of trialkyl phosphite as reducing agent and high temperatures are required. Thus, cathodic reduction at room temperature of two cyclic thiocarbonates (−1.2 to −1.4 V vs Ag/AgCl) afforded the corresponding alkenes, trans-6-(pent-1-enyl)-α-pyrone and trans-6-(pent-1,4-dienyl)-α-pyrone, which are naturally occurring metabolites isolated from Trichoderma viride and Penicillium, in high chemical yield and with excellent stereo selectivity.

Efficient synthesis of 5-aminosulfonyl uracil derivatives 2-9 and results of their antiproliferative activity are provided. Sulfonylation of the amino group in 5-aminouracil 1 with selected arylsulfonyl chlorides occurs regioselectively when the reaction is carried out in pyridine at room temperature. Simple isolation of the products by recrystallization of the crude product mixture from aqueous methanol provides good to excellent yields. The prepared 5-aminosulfonyl uracil derivatives 2-9 were tested for the antiproliferative activity on a panel of seven tumor cell lines of different histological origin (HeLa, Caco-2, NCI-H358, Raji, HuT78, Jurkat, K562) and normal MDCK I cells. Derivatives 2-9 were found more efficient to lymphoma and leukemia cells compared to solid tumor and normal cells.

Objective: This research work was performed to discover the efficacy of newly formulated topical formulation (o/w) emulgel of Raspberry fruit extract against its base taken as a control on skin erythema and skin melanin.

Methods: Concentrated Raspberry fruit extract was prepared by macerating fresh fruit in aqueous methanol under room temperature. This extract was then entrapped in the inner oily phase of o/w emulgel. Newly formulated, formerly evaluated base (without extract) and a formulation containing 4% concentrated extract of Raspberry were applied to cheeks of 13 healthy female human volunteers for a period of 12 w. Skin erythma and melanin were measured after every two weeks to evaluate any effect produced by this topical formulation.

Results: Base showed insignificant (p≥0.05) while formulation showed a significant decrease in skin erythma. Skin melanin content was insignificantly decreased by base but significantly decreased by the formulation. The newly developed cosmetic emulgel of Raspberry fruit extract showed its effects without causing any irritation and was found to be suitable and safe dermatological formulation.

Conclusion: Formulation was successfully evaluated for its dermatological effects. It was found to be a useful, harmless and cost effective skin whitening treatment derived from natural sources.

Improved procedures for the preparation of the Kamiya compound (3 R,4R)-4-(benzothiazol-2′-yldithio)-3-phenoxyacetamidoazetidin-2-0 (6) from penicillin V (1) are described. A novel feature is ozonolysis, near room temperature, in aqueous methanol in the presence of pyridine or a trace of manganese dioxide.

Abstract The demand for water supply is expected to be raised significantly in forthcoming decades. Production of reusable water from industrial and domestic wastewater is a feasible, cost effective and significant positive benefit to the environment. In the present study, the domestic rice gruel wastewater (RGW) was treated with aqueous methanol coagulation integrated aerobic membrane bioreactor (AMBR). Initially, the RGW which is at room temperature was treated with spiral wound hydrophilized - ultrafiltration (HF – UF) 5 kDa membrane module to determine the removal efficiency. Furthermore, the RGW was pre-treated with various coagulants such as methanol, ethanol and HCl. The obtained pre-treated RGW was subjected to the HF – UF 5 kDa side stream AMBR for production of reusable water. The experiments were conducted to determine the turbidity, conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were found to be 96 %, 91 %, 91 % and 94.6 %. The overall process was feasible, compact, environmental free, cost effective, eco-friendly.

Abstract From the heartwood of Lindera glauca Blume three new diarylpropanoids have been isolated and identified, which were named lindeglaucol, lindeglaucone, and lindeglaucoside A. Chipped heartwood was extracted repeatedly with 80% aqueous methanol (MeOH) at room temperature, and the concentrated methanolic extract was successively partitioned with ethyl acetate (EtOAc), n-butanol, and H2O. From the EtOAc fraction, three new diarylpropanoids and a known chalconoid were isolated through repeated column chromatography with silica gel, octadecyl silica gel, and Sephadex LH-20. The chemical structures of the compounds were elucidated by interpretation of extensive spectroscopic data such as nuclear magnetic resonance, fast atom bombardment mass spectroscopy, and infrared. In addition, a known chalconoid, cilicicone B, was isolated for the first time from the heartwood of L. glauca.

Complex [PdCl2L2], where L is a camphor hydrazone ligand, (1R,4S)-1,7,7-trimethyl-3-(2,2-dimethylhydrazone)-bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2,3-dione, efficiently promotes Markovnikov hydration of ethynylferrocene to acetylferrocene in aqueous methanol at room temperature. 1-Ferrocenylprop-1-yne and simple organic alkynes such as 1-octyne or ethynylbenzenes are not affected or polymerize under the reaction conditions.

Vitexin is an apigenin flavone glucoside with known biological functions. This research reported the effects of initial temperature treatments of Tartary buckwheat flour mixture with water and time of methanol extraction from the cooked doughs on the amount of extractable vitexin. The mixtures of flour and water were initially hydrothermally treated at temperatures from 25 °C to 95 °C. Afterward the mixtures were cooked at 95 °C for 20 min, and vitexin extracted at room temperature with 80% aqueous methanol for 20 min, 2 h and 8 h. The extractable vitexin was extracted during the same extraction times for the control in the nonhydrothermally treated Tartary buckwheat flour-water mixture samples. For the cooked dough samples, the hydrothermal treatments were important in terms of the extractability of vitexin. The extractable vitexin persisted in the control samples during the extraction time up to 8 hours, while in the hydrothermally treated and cooked dough samples, there remained none detectable vitexin. The high-temperature initial treatments during dough preparation appeared not to prevent the degradation of vitexin in Tartary buckwheat flour.
