Offshore towers standing in deep sea are susceptible to cyclic nature of wave forces. Fatigue failure initiates at the welded tubular joints of these structures where a very high stress gradient and localized stress concentration exist due to abrupt changes in the geometry. Stress concentration plays a vital role in the design of steel tubular joints, as it directly affects the fatigue life of the structures. This paper presents results of an experimental study on the behavior of an unstiffened and a stiffened steel tubular welded T-joint under axial brace loading. The effect of internal ring stiffeners has been studied theoretically and experimentally. In the experimental technique, the specimens were extensively strain-gaged and the stress distribution determined under static load. The analytical results have been obtained by finite element technique.

Timber-concrete composite beams are a new type of structural element that is environmentally friendly. The structural efficiency of this kind of beam highly depends on the stiffness of the interlayer connection. The structural efficiency of the composite was evaluated by experimental and theoretical investigations performed on the relative horizontal slip and vertical uplift along the interlayer between composite’s timber and concrete slab. Differential equations were established based on a theoretical analysis of combination effects of interlayer slip and vertical uplift, by using deformation theory of elastics. Subsequently, the differential equations were solved and the magnitude of uplift force at the interlayer was obtained. It was concluded that the theoretical calculations were in good agreement with the results of experimentation.

Tubular joints are intensively used in off-shore structures for shallow waters. Depending on the sea conditions and the type of structure, the design can be fatigue driven. This is particularly the case for off-shore wind turbines, where turbulences are generating a fatigue loading. Any improvement of the fatigue performance of the tubular joint would be beneficial to reduce the weight and the cost of the structure. To assess efficiently the fatigue resistance of the tubular joint, a testing method has been developed based on the resonance principle. The complete circumference of the welded joint can be loaded, successively in the in-plane and out-of-plane modes at a frequency close to 20Hz. Finite element computations were used to investigate the feasibility of the concept. Then, an X-node was made and successfully tested to investigate the stress distribution along the weld. The experimental results were compared with finite element computations, giving a good agreement.

The geometry of overlapping tubular joints, the equations of intersection curves and the coordinate of the intersection point are introduced first. The variational method for simple tubular joints is extended to the stress analysis of tubular K-joints with overlap. The computer program is compiled. The stress concentration factor and the position of the hot spot of an overlapping joint are found. For the sake of proving the feasibility of our analysis and program, the computed results are compared with experimental data of our photoelastic experiment and other experiments.
