Reinforced concrete (RC) structures subjected to cyclic fatigue loading are prone to progressive damage. Among the types of structural damage, those leading to shear deficiencies can result in sudden rupture of structures without warning. Hence, RC structures deficient in shear urgently need retrofitting. The use of externally bonded (EB) fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites presents many advantages and is a very promising technology for shear strengthening of RC structures. This paper encompasses a wide range of research findings related to the interaction between concrete and FRP under fatigue loading. The behavior of the bond between FRP and concrete plays a major role in the failure mode of FRP shear-strengthened structures especially under fatigue. Therefore, it is of interest to characterize the FRP/concrete interaction using appropriate models with respect to the influencing parameters. The paper will first discuss existing design guidelines and considerations related to the fatigue behavior of RC structures. A thorough review of available literature on EB-FRP/concrete bond in shear under cyclic fatigue loading will then be presented, with a focus on proposed bond-slip models and finite element studies of the FRP/concrete interface under fatigue loading.

This article investigates the potential detrimental effects of cyclic load during the installation of externally bonded (EB) carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) on a damaged reinforced concrete (RC) structure. Four RC specimens were tested in three point bending to study the consequences of crack cyclic opening-closure during epoxy-curing period. A first RC specimen (without bonded CFRP) was loaded monotonically up to failure to serve as undamaged control sample. The three other specimens were pre-cracked before being subjected to a fatigue loading procedure to simulate service condition of a damaged RC structure. Two of the three pre-cracked specimens were strengthened by EB CFRP. One specimen was repaired before the fatigue test while the other one was repaired during the fatigue test. Finally, remaining capacities of all three pre-cracked specimens were measured through monotonic bending tests until failure. It was found that, although bonding of CFRP reinforcement during cyclic load can induce some interesting features with regard to serviceability, cyclic crack opening and closing alters the cure process of epoxy located below the initial crack and decreases the effectiveness of the strengthening at ultimate state. Extended experimental studies are then needed to assess reliable safety factor for the design of repairing operations in which the bridge has to be maintained in service during CFRP installation.

Ultrahigh-performance concrete-orthotropic steel composite bridge deck is composed of the orthotropic steel deck and a thin ultrahigh-performance concrete (UHPC) overlayer. In the previous fatigue tests, two typical fatigue failure modes were found and identified. As a supplementary test after fatigue tests, air penetration method is capable of providing a reference to the quantitative and non-destructive damage detection of fatigue damage of UHPC. To further the previous study, a detailed numerical investigation is accomplished through complimentary finite element (FE) analysis. Compared with the solid element model, the refined shell-solid element model can better reflect the mechanical behavior. It is illustrated that the vertical stress can be adopted in assessing the fatigue strength of rib-to-diaphragm welded connection in the field test by means of nominal stress method. The combination of various factors would lead to fatigue shear failure of the short headed-studs. The fatigue strength of rib-to-diaphragm welded connection predicted by the hot spot stress method and the consistent nominal stress (CNS) method can basically meet the requirements of FAT90. The consistent nominal stress method can be used as the optimization method of nominal stress of fatigue detail. It is demonstrated that the fatigue life of UHPC can be estimated by S-N curves of ordinary concrete conservatively. The allowable equivalent maximum stress level can be taken as 0.55 for two million cycles of fatigue loading, and 0.52 for five million cycles of fatigue loading.

The fatigue damage behavior of bone has attracted significant attention in both the mechanical and orthopedic fields. However, due to the complex and hierarchical structure of bone, describing the damage process quantitively or qualitatively is still a significant challenge for researchers in this area. In this study, a nonlinear bi-modulus gradient model was proposed to quantify the neutral axis skewing under fatigue load in a four-point bending test. The digital image correlation technique was used to analyze the tensile and compressive strains during the fatigue process. The results showed that the compressive strain demonstrated an obvious two-stage ascending behavior, whereas the tensile strain revealed a slow upward progression during the fatigue process. Subsequently, a theoretical model was proposed to describe the degradation process of the elastic modulus and the movement of the neutral axis. The changes in the bone properties were determined using the FEM method based on the newly developed model. The results obtained from two different methods exhibited a good degree of consistency. The results obtained in this study are of help in terms of effectively exploring the damage evolution of the bone materials.

The fatigue process of concrete under compressive cyclic loading is still not completely explored. The corresponding damage processes within the material structure are especially not entirely investigated. The application of acoustic measurement methods enables a better insight into the processes of the fatigue in concrete. Normal strength concrete was investigated under compressive cyclic loading with regard to the fatigue process by using acoustic methods in combination with other nondestructive measurement methods. Acoustic emission and ultrasonic signal measurements were applied together with measurements of strains, elastic modulus, and static strength. It was possible to determine the anisotropic character of the fatigue damage caused by uniaxial loading based on the ultrasonic measurements. Furthermore, it was observed that the fatigue damage seems to consist not exclusively of load parallel oriented crack structures. Rather, crack structures perpendicular to the load as well as local compacting are likely components of the fatigue damage. Additionally, the ultrasonic velocity appears to be a good indicator for fatigue damage beside the elastic modulus. It can be concluded that acoustic methods allow an observation of the fatigue process in concrete and a better understanding, especially in combination with further measurement methods.

AbstractFracture failures of ship plates subjected to in-plane biaxial low-cycle fatigue loading are generally the coupling result of accumulative plasticity and biaxial low-cycle fatigue damage. A biaxial low-cycle fatigue crack growth analysis of hull structure that accounts for the accumulative plasticity effect can be more suitable for the actual evaluation of the overall fracture performance of the hull structure in severe sea conditions. An analytical model of biaxial low-cycle fatigue crack propagation with a control parameter for ∆CTOD is presented for hull inclined-crack plate. A test was conducted for cruciform specimens made of Q235 steel with an inclined crack to validate the presented analysis. The biaxial accumulative plasticity behavior and the effects of biaxiality and stress ratios were investigated. The results of this study reveal a strong dependence of biaxial low-cycle fatigue crack propagation on biaxial accumulated plasticity.

OBJECTIVE The traditional anterior approach for multilevel severe cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is demanding and risky. Recently, a novel surgical procedure—anterior controllable antedisplacement and fusion (ACAF)—was introduced by the authors to deal with these problems and achieve better clinical outcomes. However, to the authors’ knowledge, the immediate and long-term biomechanical stability obtained after this procedure has never been evaluated. Therefore, the authors compared the postoperative biomechanical stability of ACAF with those of more traditional approaches: anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF). METHODS To determine and assess pre- and postsurgical range of motion (ROM) (2 Nm torque) in flexion-extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation in the cervical spine, the authors collected cervical areas (C1–T1) from 18 cadaveric spines. The cyclic fatigue loading test was set up with a 3-Nm cycled load (2 Hz, 3000 cycles). All samples used in this study were randomly divided into three groups according to surgical procedures: ACDF, ACAF, and ACCF. The spines were tested under the following conditions: 1) intact state flexibility test; 2) postoperative model (ACDF, ACAF, ACCF) flexibility test; 3) cyclic loading (n = 3000); and 4) fatigue model flexibility test. RESULTS After operations were performed on the cadaveric spines, the segmental and total postoperative ROM values in all directions showed significant reductions for all groups. Then, the ROMs tended to increase during the fatigue test. No significant crossover effect was detected between evaluation time and operation method. Therefore, segmental and total ROM change trends were parallel among the three groups. However, the postoperative and fatigue ROMs in the ACCF group tended to be larger in all directions. No significant differences between these ROMs were detected in the ACDF and ACAF groups. CONCLUSIONS This in vitro biomechanical study demonstrated that the biomechanical stability levels for ACAF and ACDF were similar and were both significantly greater than that of ACCF. The clinical superiority of ACAF combined with our current results showed that this procedure is likely to be an acceptable alternative method for multilevel cervical OPLL treatment.
