A Conceptual Discussion and an Empirical Analysis of Commercial Land-Use Succession

Land-use succession theory has been the most thinly developed area in the study of urban land economics. In this paper a brief review of the spotty development of the land-use succession concept is first offered, followed by a discussion of the economic arguments of commercial land-use succession and related problems in succession studies. Then, as an empirical analysis, commercial land use in downtown Denver from 1947 to 1971 is studied. Characteristics of succession are revealed first, by the description of succession by both first- and second-order probability transition matrices; and second, by an examination of the stability of succession via two different approaches. Not unexpectedly, one of the major characteristics found in the study area is the nonstationary process of land-use succession, cautioning against the danger of employing a transition matrix estimated from one time period to predict future land use.

Takada’s group developed a method for estimating the yearly transition matrix by calculating the mth power roots of a transition matrix with an interval of m years. However, the probability of obtaining a yearly transition matrix with real and positive elements is unknown. In this study, empirical verification based on transition matrices from previous land-use studies and Monte-Carlo simulations were conducted to estimate the probability of obtaining an appropriate yearly transition probability matrix. In 62 transition probability matrices of previous land-use studies, 54 (87%) could provide a positive or small-negative solution. For randomly generated matrices with differing sizes or power roots, the probability of obtaining a positive or small-negative solution is low. However, the probability is relatively large for matrices with large diagonal elements, exceeding 90% in most cases. These results indicate that Takada et al.’s method is a powerful tool for analyzing land-use dynamics.

PurposeThis paper investigates the effect of the volatility of resource revenue on the volatility of non-resource revenue.Design/methodology/approachThe empirical analysis has utilized an unbalanced panel data set comprising 54 countries over the period 1980–2015. The two-step system generalized methods of moments (GMM) is the main economic approach used to carry out the empirical analysis.FindingsResults show that resource revenue volatility generates lower non-resource revenue volatility only when the share of resource revenue in total public revenue is lower than 18%. Otherwise, higher resource revenue volatility would result in a rise in non-resource revenue volatility.Research limitations/implicationsIn light of the adverse effect of volatility of non-resource revenue on public spending, and hence on economic growth and development prospects, countries whose total public revenue is highly dependent on resource revenue should adopt appropriate policies to ensure the rise in non-resource revenue, as well as the stability of the latter.Practical implicationsEconomic diversification in resource-rich countries (particularly in developing countries among them) could contribute to reducing the dependence of economies on natural resources, and hence the dependence of public revenue on resource revenue. Therefore, policies in favour of economic diversification would contribute to stabilizing non-resource revenue, which is essential for financing development needs.Originality/valueTo the best of our knowledge, this topic has not been addressed in the literature.

Abstract Land use/land cover changes (LULCC) at Adei watershed (Ethiopia) over a period of 23 years (1986–2009) has been analysed from LANDSAT imagery and ancillary data. The patterns (magnitude and direction) of LULCC were quantified and the final land use/land cover maps were produced after a supervised classification with appropriate post-processing. Image analysis results revealed that the study area has undergone substantial LULCC, primarily a shift from natural cover into managed agro-systems, which is apparently attributed to the increasing both human and livestock pressure. Over the 23 years, the aerial coverage of forest and grass lands declined by 8.5% and 4.3%, respectively. On the other hand, agricultural and shrub lands expanded by 9.1% and 3.7%, respectively. This shows that most of the previously covered by forest and grass lands are mostly shifted to the rapidly expanding farm land use classes. The findings of this study suggested that the rate of LULCC over the study period, particularly deforestation due to the expansion of farmland need to be given due attention to maintain the stability and sustainability of the ecosystem.

In order to improve the study of the spatial form of villages, fractal theory is used to analyze the plane and facade of Maling Village, Changdai Town, Mengjin County, Luoyang City, Henan Province, China. The results show that the village facade and plane spatial shape of Maling Village have obvious fractal characteristics and the fractal dimension can be used as an important index to evaluate the plane and facade shape of the village. The fractal dimension of each land use type is between 1.2415 and 1.7443. The stability index of land use types in the village follows the order of village construction land > cultivated land > road > garden land > woodland > grassland. The research results can provide decision-making information for the rational use and planning of village land.

The stability of total (t) and free (f) prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in male serum specimens stored at –70°C or lower temperature for 4.7 to 4.9 years was studied. Until now, the stability of these analytes in serum has not been evaluated systematically beyond 2 years of storage at –70°C. Aliquots of frozen serum were thawed in 2001 and 2006 and assayed for tPSA and fPSA using a Dade Behring Dimension(r) RxL analyzer and reagents. tPSA values ranged from 0.07 to 69.94 and 0.00 to 69.83 ng/mL in 2001 and 2006, respectively, whereas fPSA values for the tested specimens ranged from 0.02 to 5.72 and 0.00 to 5.92, respectively. Deming regression analyses showed agreement in assay values over time as tPSA values yielded a slope of 1.0112 and a y-intercept of 0.0195; fPSA values produced a slope 1.0538 and a y-intercept of –0.0442; f/tPSA values yielded a slope of 0.9631 and a y-intercept of 0.1195. A Bland-Altman analysis of the data demonstrated analyte and ratio stability over this time period. We conclude that serum, when collected properly and stored at –70°C or lower temperature, may be used for tPSA and fPSA clinical studies for at least 5 years after collection.

AbstractA problem in representation theory of $p$-adic groups is the computation of the Casselman basis of Iwahori fixed vectors in the spherical principal series representations, which are dual to the intertwining integrals. We shall express the transition matrix $(m_{u,v})$ of the Casselman basis to another natural basis in terms of certain polynomials that are deformations of the Kazhdan–Lusztig R-polynomials. As an application we will obtain certain new functional equations for these transition matrices under the algebraic involution sending the residue cardinality $q$ to $q^{-1}$. We will also obtain a new proof of a surprising result of Nakasuji and Naruse that relates the matrix $(m_{u,v})$ to its inverse.
