Urban Fire as an Unstabilized Parasite: The 1976–1978 Outbreak in Bushwick, Brooklyn

Fire service cuts recommended by the Rand Corporation, and largely implemented before New York City's ‘fiscal crisis’, are known to have initiated a geographically spreading, temporally recurrent fire epidemic. Examination of a resulting fire outbreak in Brooklyn's Bushwick section shows the epidemic to have temporal and spatial ‘patchiness' characteristics of a parasite infestation, as well as an apparent composite ‘life cycle’, but without the stabilizing mechanisms which assure the survival both of host and of parasite populations. The composite fire ‘life cycle’ implies the need for a multiple factor eradication program, in which improvements in fire service play a key role, both for extinguishment and for prevention purposes.

Background: Malaria parasites go through major transitions during their complex life cycle, yet the underlying differentiation pathways remain obscure. Here we apply single cell transcriptomics to unravel the program inducing sexual differentiation in Plasmodium falciparum. Parasites have to make this essential life-cycle decision in preparation for human-to-mosquito transmission. Methods: By combining transcriptional profiling with quantitative imaging and genetics, we defined a transcriptional signature in sexually committed cells. Results: We found this transcriptional signature to be distinct from general changes in parasite metabolism that can be observed in response to commitment-inducing conditions. Conclusions: This proof-of-concept study provides a template to capture transcriptional diversity in parasite populations containing complex mixtures of different life-cycle stages and developmental programs, with important implications for our understanding of parasite biology and the ongoing malaria elimination campaign.

The work identifies the features of the artistic worldview of urban reality by the author, which is associated with the reproduction of the criminal sphere of life in New York in the middle of the twentieth century. It was found that the compositional center and background of events in the work is the image of the city, which becomes a sensotvir dominant, forms a system of local areas mainly without detailed action in time. The image of the city is perceived in the imagination of the explicit recipient, obeys the author’s intention and consciously follows it, becoming a passive observer. The author’s assessment of the reproduction of the objective world of the city is absent. The construction of temporal and spatial elements occurs through the retrospection of the narrator. New York is becoming a certified reflection of the life of the mafia world, full of social vices and an idle lifestyle. The sensual sphere of the city is full of immorality, the prosperity of crime, and the mercantile interests of residents. The linguistic context of reproducing the image of the city is indicated by modeling a kind of chronicle with a lexically monotonous text, created through the use of newspaper and telegraph stylistics.

Abstract A description is provided for Pucciniastrum americanum. Information is included on the disease caused by the organism, its transmission, geographical distribution, and hosts. HOSTS: Pycnia and aecia on Picea glauca (=P. canadensis), uredia and telia on Rubus idaeus (incl. R. strigosus) and R. leucodermis (raspberries). DISEASE: Needle rust of white spruce. Late leaf rust or late yellow rust of raspberry, infecting canes, leaves, petioles, calyces and fruits. GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: Canada and U.S.A. (widely distributed, recorded from British Columbia, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Mass., Md, Me, Montana, North Dakota, New Hamp., New Jersey, Nova Scotia, New York, Ohio, Ontario, Quebec, Vermont, Wisconsin, West Virginia). TRANSMISSION: Although the basidiospores infect Picea glauca (white spruce) (Darker, 1929) in some areas they probably play little part in the life cycle on raspberry since this rust is found on the latter host year after year in regions remote from any spruce trees (Anderson, 1956).

Peer support, as part of a recovery-oriented approach to treatment, is a valuable resource across various clinical and nonclinical populations. Specifically, in fire service, peer support may bridge the gap between firefighters' behavioral health needs and access to professional services. The current chapter summarizes the literature on peer support utility, presents data on barriers to treatment, and describes the roles clinicians can fill in partnering with fire service peer support to enhance the quality and reach of behavioral health services offered to fire service personnel. Finally, future research directions are outlined to continue the conversation about how to improve collaborations between peer supporters, clinicians, and others working to support the needs and strengths of firefighters.
