The molecular adducts of indole-3-acetic acid (iaa) and indole-2-carboxylic acid (ica) with 5-nitroquinoline (nq), [(iaa)(nq)2] (1) and [(ica)(nq)] (2), have been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic methods. Both examples involve charge transfer as well as a network of hydrogen-bonding interactions. Thin films of compound (2), and other similar adduct complexes of ica, can be prepared by thermal evaporation techniques and in this form exhibit a weak second-order non-linear optical signal. However, these films display poor optical quality and, without improvement, are not suitable for any potential non-linear optical applications.

ABSTRACTFerroelectric oxide epitaxial thin films are potentially important for a variety of guided-wave electro-optic and non-linear optical applications. Metalorganic chemical vapor deposition has been used to synthesize epitaxial thin films of a number of ferroelectric oxides. The films now have sufficient optical quality to enable the fabrication of waveguide devices including electro-optic modulators and optical amplifiers for 1.54 microns.

The title compound, tricadmium trizinc tetraborate, Cd3Zn3(BO3)4, is a new non-linear optical (NLO) crystal and its structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This compound is composed of planar [BO3]3− groups sharing O atoms with CdO4 or ZnO4 tetrahedra. The BO3 triangles are located on threefold axes and are arranged with nearly the same orientation. The Cd and Zn atoms are disordered on the same site in the proportion 1:1. A strong second harmonic generation of Nd:YAG laser radiation (λ = 1064 nm) has been observed for a crystal of the title compound.

Five adducts consisting of carboxylic acid-substituted indoles with nitro-substituted benzoic acids have been synthesized and tested for second-order non-linear optical properties. These were indole-2-carboxylic acid with 2,4-dinitrobenzoic acid (1), 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid (2), and 2,4,6-trinitrobenzoic acid (3), and indole-3-acetic acid with 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid (4), and 2,4,6-trinitrobenzoic acid (5). Compound (2) produced clear, yellow crystals (space group P -1 with a 6·8400(7), b 15·150(2), c 16·097(2) Å, α 84·911(9), β 87·088(10), γ 77·865(9)°, Z 4) which allowed the structure to be determined by X-ray diffraction. Of the five adducts, compounds (3) and (5) gave second harmonic intensities of 0·15 and 0·16 times respectively that of a urea standard.

The crystal structure of lead tetraborate, PbO.2B2O3, has been refined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data (Mo Kα radiation, λ = 0.71069 Å). Crystal data at room temperature: Mr = 362.43, orthorhombic, P21 nm (C 7 2v ), a = 4.251 (2), b = 4.463 (3), c = 10.860 (3) Å, V = 206.04 Å3 with Z = 2, μ = 402.6 cm−1, Dx = 5.88 Mg m−3, F(000) = 316, final R = 0.022, wR = 0.025 over 655 reflections with I > 2.5σ(I). Atomic coordinates are in general agreement with those previously reported for the isostructural compound, SrO.2B2O3, by Perloff & Block [Acta Cryst. (1966), 20, 274–279]. All the borons are tetrahedrally coordinated with a three-dimensional network formed from O atoms that are common to either two or three tetrahedra. The tetrahedra show deformation because the B—O bonds involving the two-coordinated O atoms are much shorter than those involved with three-coordinated O atoms. The Pb atoms are situated in empty tunnels running along [010] left by the network of tetrahedra. The Pb atoms display a highly asymmetric distribution of Pb—O bonding, with the five shortest bonds covering the range 2.483 (5)–2.664 (5) Å, being all situated to one side of the Pb atom. Preliminary investigations of the non-linear optical behaviour of lead tetraborate are also discussed. The results indicate that doping with barium should lead to a new non-linear optical material that is both phase-matchable and has a high optical non-linearity.

A series of molecular adducts of 2-aminopyrimidine and 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole with heterocyclic carboxylic acids have been prepared and characterized by using X-ray powder diffraction and in four cases by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. These four compounds are the (1 : 1) adducts of 2-aminopyrimidine with indole-3-acetic acid [(C4H5N3)(C10H9NO2)], N-methylpyrrole-2-carboxylic acid [(C4H5N3)(C6H7NO2)] and thiophen-2-carboxylic acid [(C4H5N3)(C5H4O2S)], and the (1 : 1) adduct of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole with thiophen-2-carboxylic acid [(C2H4N4)(C5H4O2S)]. Other compounds described are the (1 : 1) adducts of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole with indole-3-acetic acid and N-methylpyrrole-2-carboxylic acid.

Four adducts of triphenylphosphine oxide with aromatic carboxylic acids have been synthesized and tested for second-order non-linear optical properties. These were with N-methylpyrrole-2-carboxylic acid (1), indole-2-carboxylic acid (2), 3-dimethylaminobenzoic acid (3), and thiophen-2-carboxylic acid (4). Compound (1) produced clear, colourless crystals (space group P 212121 with a 9·892(1), b 14·033(1), c 15·305(1) Å, Z 4) which allowed the structure to be determined by X-ray diffraction.

A novel cobalt(II) complex, namely [Co(tpa)2(H2O)4]·2H2O (1) (Htpa = 5-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)pyridine-3-carboxylic acid) has been solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 was further characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR spectrum, electronic spectrum, X-ray powder diffraction and thermal gravimetric analysis. Structural analysis shows that complex 1 was stabilized via π···π stacking and hydrogen bonding interactions to give a 3D supramolecular framework. Hirshfeld surface analysis showed that O···H (29.5%), H···H (23.8%), N···H (21.5%) and π···π (8.6%) intermolecular contacts are the most important interactions in the crystal of 1. In addition, the synthesized Co(II) complex showed favorable photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under UV light at room temperature. The degradation process of MO was in accordance with the first-order reaction kinetics, and the t1/2 for the reaction is 27.3 min, and the apparent rate constant is k = 2.54 × 10−2 min−1.

AbstractA new metal-organic framework, [Pb(hmpcaH)2]n (1), has been hydrothermally synthesized from Pb(OAc)2 · 3H2O and 2-hydroxy-6-methylpyridine-4-carboxylic acid (hmpcaH2; 2), and characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental and thermogravimetric analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In complex 1, each hmpcaH− ligand represents a three-connected node to combine with the hexacoordinated Pb(II) ions, generating a 3D binodal (3,6)-connected ant network. The crystal structure of 2 was determined. The solid-state fluorescence properties of 1 and 2 were investigated.
