The objective of the study: a comparative study of immediate and long-term results of pulmonary tuberculoma precision resection with Nd:YAG-laser with a wavelength of 1,318 nm and atypical resection with suturing devices.Subjects and Methods. Two groups of 58 patients each were compared. The groups were comparable in terms of gender, age, the nature of the concomitant pathology and the main pathological process. In Group I, patients were operated on using precision 1,318-nm Nd:YAG-laser resection, and in Group II, the sublobar resection with suturing devices were used.Results. The mean duration of hospital stay in Groups I and II was 19.10 ± 6.02 and 19.20 ± 6.02 days respectively (p > 0.05), the duration of surgery made 65 [55; 75] and 55 [45; 60] minutes (p > 0.05), the mean volume of surgical blood loss was 50 [33; 70] and 70 [50; 165] ml (p > 0.05), and the mean duration of pleural cavity drainage after surgery was 4 [3; 5] and 4 [3; 6] days (p > 0.05). Statistically significant differences were noted in the mean volume of the resected part of the lung: 14.0 ± 7.4 mm3 in Group I versus 95.0 ± 9.7 mm3 in Group II (p ≤ 0.05). The complete clinical and radiological cure was achieved in 70% of patients in Group I and 82% in Group II. According to MSCT data, in 91.6% of cases, a thin linear scar is formed in the area of precision intervention. Conclusion: The surgical methods are comparable in terms of immediate and long-term results but precision laser resection minimizes the removal of intact tissue during the removal of tuberculomas.

We aimed to survey whether the timing of neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy would alter the corneal endothelial morphology and density. A retrospective cohort study was conducted, and 48 patients with unilateral posterior capsular opacity (PCO) and Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy performance were enrolled. The participants were divided into the early Nd:YAG group (timing ≤ 12 months, n = 20) and late Nd:YAG group (timing > 12 months, n= 28) depending on elapsed months between phacoemulsification and Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. Endothelial cell density (ECD), coefficient of variant (CV), hexagonality (HEX), and central corneal thickness (CCT) between the two groups were collected. A generalized estimate equation was conducted to evaluate the corneal endothelial parameters between the two groups with an adjusted odds ratio (aOR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). The CDVA was improved after treatment in both groups (both p < 0.001). Chronically, ECD in the early group was significantly decreased one week after treatment (2221.50 ± 327.73/mm2 vs. 2441.55 ± 321.80/mm2, p < 0.001), which recovered to 2369.95 ± 76.37/mm2 four weeks after the treatment but was still lower than the preoperative status (p < 0.001). In addition, the HEX percentage showed a significant reduction at four weeks after treatment (p = 0.028). The ECD in the early group was significantly lower than that in the late group (aOR: 0.167, 95% CI: 0.079–0.356, p = 0.003) in both week 1 (p < 0.001) and week 4 (p = 0.004) after laser treatment. In conclusion, the early application of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy within one year after cataract surgery may be the reason for postoperative ECD decrement without known etiology.

Abstract Laser drilling of amorphous alloy foils was conducted using low-energy long-pulses (LP) generated using a Nd:YAG laser. Results showed that LP can drill an amorphous alloy foil more efficiently than a nanosecond pulse (NSP) can: an LP at 1 mJ can open a through-hole on an amorphous alloy foil with 25 mm thickness although single shot NSP at 20 mJ formed a crater with ca. 3 mm depth. From these findings, we infer that the markedly higher drilling efficiency of a low-energy LP than that of NSP is attributable to 1) lower plasma generation by LP than by NSP, and 2) repeated irradiation of the target material by multiple sub-pulses in an LP. Results also demonstrate that low-energy LP drilling is applicable to various metal foils and that the drilling efficiency depends on the metal species.

Purpose: To report the safety and efficiency of carbon dioxide (CO2) laser-assisted sclerectomy surgery (CLASS) in Chinese patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and the management of unexpected postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation. Methods: This was a prospective case series study. A total of 23 eyes from 23 patients with POAG who underwent CLASS were involved and followed-up for 12 months. The primary outcomes included the changes in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), IOP, and medications before and after CLASS. The secondary outcomes were success rate and postoperative laser interventions. Results: The mean age of the patient was 42.6 ± 16.0 years. There was no significant change in BCVA and visual field at baseline and 12 months after CLASS. The number of medications was significantly reduced after CLASS. The IOP was also significantly decreased and remained well controlled during the follow-up period, except for a transient elevation at 1 month postoperatively, due to the occurrence of peripheral anterior synechiae (PAS). Generally, 17 patients (73.9%) were treated with neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser synechiolysis to remove iris obstruction in the filtration site and seven patients (30.4%) underwent Nd:YAG laser goniopuncture to deal with scleral reservoir reduction. Only one patient (4.3%) received surgical repositioning due to iris incarceration. The complete success rate and total success rate at 12 months were 69.6 and 95.7%, respectively. Conclusion: CLASS was a safe and effective approach for Chinese patients with POAG. Peripheral anterior synechiae (PAS), iris incarceration, and scleral reservoir reduction were common causes of unexpected postoperative IOP elevation. Individualized Nd:YAG laser intervention helps to improve the long-term outcomes after CLASS.

Objective. To compare the effects of bleaching associated with Er:YAG and Nd:YAG laser on enamel structure and mixed biofilm formation on teeth surfaces. Materials and Methods. Sixty-eight enamel samples were randomly divided into four groups ( n = 17 ), control, Opalescence Boost only, Opalescence Boost plus Er: YAG laser, and Opalescence Boost plus Nd:YAG laser. The structure was observed using SEM after bleaching. Subsequently, the treated enamel samples were also cultured in suspensions of Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis, Actinomyces viscosus, and Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) for 24 and 48 h. Biofilm formation was quantified by crystal violet staining, and the structure was visualized by confocal laser scanning microscopy. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis method. Results. The enamel structure significantly changed after bleaching. There was no obvious difference in the biofilm formation after 24 h; however, after 48 hours, the amount of biofilm increased significantly. Remarkably, the amount was significantly higher on enamel bleached only, however, there was no significant difference between samples bleached with Er:YAG or Nd:YAG laser compared to the control. Conclusions. Bleaching only appeared to markedly promote biofilm formation after 48 h, and the biofilms on samples bleached with Er:YAG or Nd:YAG laser did not change significantly, showing that bleaching with Er:YAG or Nd:YAG laser can be safely applied in clinical practice.

Abstract The influence of pumping laser pulse on the property of quasi-continuous-wave diode-side-pumped Nd:YAG laser is investigated theoretically and experimentally here. Under remaining a fixed duty cycle, the average output power increases, and the corresponding thermal focal length shorten with the increase of the pump pulse duration, which attributes to the decrease of the ratio of pulse buildup time to the pulse duration. At a pump power of 146 W, the laser output power changes from 65.1 W to 81.2 W when the pulse duration is adjusted from 150 μs to 1000 μs, confirming a significant enhancement of 24.7%. A laser rate equation model incorporating the amplified spontaneous emission is also utilized and numerically solved, and the simulated results agree well with the experimental data.
