A revision of the Australasian species of the freshwater genera Boeckella and Hemiboeckella (Copepoda: Calanoida)

The taxonomic utility of various characters is discussed. The status of Hemiboeckella searli Sars is discussed, and the retention of the monotypic genus Hemiboeckella is considered to be justified. A list of generic characters is given for both Boeckella and Hemiboeckella, a key is given to the Australasian species of Boeckella and is accompanied by comparative drawings. Except for B. minuta Sars, this key does not enable female specimens to be identified. The number of Australasian species of Boeckella previously described is reduced from 25 to 14 by synonymy. Two new species, B. geniculata and B. montana, and a new subspecies, B. robusta maxima, are described. Another apparently new species is figured but not named (based on a single specimen only). Two species described from New Zealand are recorded from Australia for the first time. The male fifth legs of all species are described and, except for B. opaqua Fairbridge, all are figured. Additional features are also figured for some species. The distribution of species and some general aspects of their ecology are discussed.

A new species and eight new subspecies of Papilionoidea discovered in Vietnam between 2002 and 2020 are described and illustrated. The status of two taxa are revised. New taxa include Pieridae: Delias sanaca bidoupa Monastyrskii & Vu subspec. nov. and Talbotia naganum aurelia Monastyrskii & Vu subspec. nov.; Nymphalidae: Abrota ganga pulcheria Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Bassarona recta consonensis Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Pantoporia bieti aurantina Monastyrskii & To subspec. nov.; Ragadia latifasciata cristata Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Ragadia latifasciata crystallina Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Faunis indistincta luctus Monastyrskii & Vu subspec. nov. & Aemona gialaica Monastyrskii, K. Saito & Vu, spec. nov. The taxon infuscata Devyatkin & Monastyrskii, previously described as the subspecies Aemona tonkinensis infuscata, was elevated to the species level, while the taxon critias (Ragadia critias Riley & Godfrey) was reduced to a subspecies. Three Satyrinae species were recorded from Vietnam for the first time: Palaeonympha opalina Butler, 1871; Ypthima motschulskyi Bremer & Grey, 1853; and Ragadia latifasciata Leech, 1891.

Two new species of Apteroscelio Kieffer, a previously monotypic genus, are here described, illustrated and keyed. Affinities between Apteroscelio and other scelionine genera are discussed. The male of this genus is imaged and described for the first time.

Two genera of the shore-fly tribe Hyadinini, Hyadina Haliday and Parahyadina Tonnoir & Malloch, are revised, and all species treated, save P. lacustris Tonnoir & Malloch, are described for the first time. The phylogenetic position of both genera within Hyadinini is presented along with confirming, morphological evidence. The New Zealand fauna of Hyadina is now limited to the single new species H. breva, and Parahyadina is expanded from being a monotypic genus based on P. lacustris to also include the following 9 endemic new species: P. angusta, P. atra, P. bifurcata, P. bulla, P. debilis, P. edmistoni, P. hennigi, P. irwini, and P. latistylis. For both genera, emphasis is given to structures of the male terminalia, which are fully illustrated. Detailed locality data and distribution maps for all species are provided, and structures of the male terminalia are fully illustrated. For perspective and to facilitate recognition of genera, the tribe Hyadinini is diagnosed and a key to genera from New Zealand is provided.

Examination and taxonomic review of the batfishes collected from New Zealand and adjacent waters reveals five nominal species: Halieutopsis bathyoreos and Malthopsis mitrigera are recorded from New Zealand for the first time; the synon-ymy of Halieutaea maoria with H. stellata is confirmed, and two new species are described. Malthopsis asparata sp. nov. is unique in having stout principal bucklers with prominent spines. Malthopsis parva sp. nov. differs from congeners in having a naked abdomen, a short rostral spine directed upward, and all principal bucklers blunt.

Two new species of oribatid mites of the previously monotypic genus Ausoribula Lee, 1992 (Oribatulidae) are described from termite nests of South Africa. Ausoribula termitophila n. sp. has a pointed rostrum, elongately fusiform, bothridial setae, a weak anterior notogastral margin which only slightly protrudes into the prodorsum, notogastral setae c2 similar in length to other setae (except shorter c1) and three or four pairs of genital setae. In contrast, A. quagesetosa Lee, 1992 has a rounded rostrum, bothridial setae clavate, and the anterior notogastral margin interrupted and strongly protruding into the prodorsum. Ausoribula bloemfonteinensis n. sp. has a pointed rostrum, clavate bothridial setae, the anterior notogastral margin distinct and only slightly protruding, notogastral setae c2 shorter than other setae (except the shorter c1) and three pairs of genital setae. The genus Ausoribula is recorded in the Ethiopian region for the first time.

A tubiferous cirripede Tetraclitella judiciae sp. nov., previously known only from two isolated and incomplete shell wall plates identified as Tetraclitella sp. cf. T. purpurascens (Wood, 1815), is described from the early Miocene of Victoria, Australia; a further taxon, Tetraclitella purpurascens miocenica subsp. nov., occurs in the late Miocene-Pliocene of Victoria, and specimens from the early Miocene of New Zealand, previously recorded as Tetraclitella sp. cf. T. purpurascens (Wood, 1815) are redesignated as Tetraclitella nodicostata sp. nov. Tetraclitella is the first cirripede genus known to have had tubiferous walls. Incorporation of chitinous stringers within the shell wall of early tetraclitids (e.g. Epopella) may have facilitated the development of the tubiferous shell wall, which permitted sessile barnacles to maximise the shell strength to calcite ratio: in doing so, these chitinous stringers not only reduced the diversion of energy required to extract calcium carbonate from seawater, but improved the effectiveness of the shell wall in resisting predators. It is also argued here that the presence of chitin within the shell increased resistance to both corrasion and corrosion, the latter becoming an increasing problem for calcareous shelled organisms following a drop in the pH of seawater after the PalaeoceneEocene Thermal Maximum.

New data on taxonomy of several Afrotropical species of Harpalus Latreille, 1802 are provided, with special attention to the species recorded outside the African continent. Two new species from East Africa are described: H. pseudoasemus sp. n. from Tanzania and Kenya (type locality: Oldonyo Dambu, 15 km north of Arusha, Tanzania), and H. merkli sp. n. from Ethiopia (type locality: Chercher). Harpalus impressus Roth, 1851, H. asemus Basilewsky, 1947, H. fuscoaeneus Dejean, 1829, H. australasiae Dejean, 1829, and H. parvulus Dejean, 1829 are re-described based on the types and additional material, and the diagnostic characters of Hypharpax australis (Dejean, 1829) are given. Harpalus australasiae sensu Larochelle & Larivière, 2005 (non Dejean, 1829) is treated as conspecific with the Afrotropical H. parvulus which was introduced to Australia and New Zealand. The genus Anisochirus Jeannel, 1946, stat. resurr. is restored for most of the Madagascan and Mascarene species included previously in Harpalus. The members of this genus differ from those of Harpalus in having glabrous paraglossae. The status and taxonomic position of Anisochirus is discussed. The following synonymies are proposed: Harpalus impressus Roth, 1851 = H. sundaicus Schauberger, 1933, syn. n., and H. asemus Basilewsky, 1947 (January 30) = H. hamasiensis G. Müller, 1947 (September 30), syn. n. Lectotypes are designated for H. impressus and H. fuscoaeneus.

Two new species of deep-water xanthid crabs, Euryxanthops chiltoni, new species, and Medaeops serenei, new species, are described from the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand. This is the first time these genera are reported from New Zealand. Keys for the identification of all species of Euryxanthops and Medaeops are provided. The two new species bring the total number of species of xanthids from the Kermadec Is. to 17, and the known species of Euryxanthops and Medaeops to five and six respectively;. Although caught in the vicinity of hydrothermal vents, there is no evidence that these species are directly dependent upon the vent community.

Acropsis Grant, 1958 is a monotypic genus with records only for Peru (type locality). Acropsis is being redescribed, including the Acropsis tectiformis species and two new species: Acropsis solimoesensis sp. nov. and Acropsis julianae sp. nov. The male internal genitalia and the stridulatory file morphology for the genus is being described for the first time. Furthermore, the genus is registered for the first time for Colombia (Caquetá) and Brazil (Acre and Amazonas) and additionally notes on the habitat are made.

The Neotropical genus Pseudophorticus Erwin, 2004 is reported from the Eastern Hemispere for the first time. Two new species, P. constricticollis sp. nov. and P. tetragonoderoides sp. nov. are described from Vietnam; within the former species, two subspecies are recognized: the nominotypical one (central Vietnam) and P. constricticollis tonkinensis ssp. nov. (northen Vietnam). Additional records of Selina westermanni Motschulsky, 1858 in Vietnam are given. Aeolodermus emarginatus (Chaudoir, 1872) is first reported from Vietnam.
