An optimized synthesis route was applied for controlling the preparation of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) in an aqueous solution. Some key factors which influencing the properties of CdSe QDs, such as initial pH, ratio of precursor etc, were investigated. The as-prepared products have been characterized by TEM, XPS, XRD, UV-Vis and fluorescence (FL) spectra. The result showed that the high-quality CdSe QDs with 3 nm was obtained. The experiments also conformed that the CdSe QDs with better FL properties were obtained with properly initial pH, 5, suitably [Cd2+] / [SeSO3 2-], range from 1:0.25 to 1:0.75 and the ratio of [Cd2+] / [TGA] is 1:2~1:3.

We have demonstrated a simple method for the synthesis of water-soluble and well-dispersed fluorescent DNA-dots under mild conditions, which could be used as an effective fluorescent probe for the detection of iron ions with relatively good selectivity and sensitivity in an aqueous solution as well as in biological imaging applications.

The photoexcitation energy transfer is found and investigated in complexes of CdSe/ZnS cationic quantum dots and chlorin e6 molecules formed by covalent bonding and electrostatic interaction in aqueous solution and in porous track membranes. The quantum dots and chlorin e6 molecules form stable complexes that exhibit Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from quantum dots to chlorin e6 regardless of complex formation conditions. Competitive channels of photoexcitation energy dissipation in the complexes, which hamper the FRET process, were found and discussed.

Investigations of chiral host guest chemistry are important to explore recognition in confined environments. Here, by synthesizing water-soluble chiral porous nanocapsule based on the inorganic metal-oxo Keplerate-type cluster, {Mo132} with chiral lactate ligands with the composition [Mo132O372(H2O)72(<i>x-</i>Lactate)30]42- (<i>x</i> = D or L), it was possible to study the interaction with a chiral guest, L/D-carnitine and (<i>R</i>/<i>S</i>)-2-butanol in aqueous solution. The enantioselective recognition was studied by quantitative 1H NMR and 1H DOSY NMR which highlighted that the chiral recognition is regulated by two distinct sites. Differences in the association constants (K) of L- and D-carnitine, which, due to their charge, are generally restricted from entering the interior of the host, are observed, indicating that their recognition predominantly occurs at the surface pores of the structure. Conversely, a larger difference in association constants (K<i>S</i>/K<i>R</i> = 3) is observed for recognition within the capsule interior of (<i>R</i>)- and (<i>S</i>)-2-butanol.
