This article describes a framework for definitional analysis that presents definitions as dynamic entities encompassing both conceptual relations, following a category template pattern, and its formalization in the terminological definitional structure. The definitional analysis accounts for various levels of complexity, depending on how detailed the understanding is or needs to be in a specific contextual situation. We are presently using this methodology in a research project called OncoTerm. One of the objectives of this project is to elaborate a bilingual terminological database, whose conceptual structure is an extension of an existing resource, the Mikrokosmos Ontology. In our termbase, medical concepts are organized in categories represented by templates, which are systematically applied to all category numbers. The application of the template to more specific concepts generates values that show the inheritance of knowledge structures within a specialized domain. The definitional information within each term entry is thus totally coherent with the information regarding other terms within the same conceptual category. This approach leads to the specification of a language of terminographic definition, which is concise, consistent and applicable not only to the domain of oncology, but to other medical domains and other languages.

Advances in corpus linguistics are of vital importance in terminology. The information obtained from corpora can be used to complement data already codified in dictionaries and termbases. In this article, we describe a framework of linguistic analysis that facilitates the extraction of conceptual information from corpora, and thus contributes to the study and analysis of terminological contexts. We are presently using this methodology in a research project called Oncoterm. In this article we describe a theoretical and practical approach to the analysis of phraseological units, specifically terminological phrasemes (Meyer and Mackintosh 1994, 1996), as entities determined by predicate relations, leaving aside, therefore, the traditional view of collocations and compounds as static structures following specific syntactic patterns. Instead, we claim that these units can be considered as terminographic formalizations of a conceptual structure, a phraseme template, established according to certain ontological patterns. This phraseological analysis accounts for phenomena such as multidimensionality, recursiveness and inheritance, which pose a problem in the management of multiword units. We are currently implementing this methodology in OntoTerm®, a concept-oriented tool for terminology management used in a research project called OncoTerm, whose scope of study has been, so far, the subdomain of oncology.

A musical groove is most typically created by a small group of musicians working together, each contributing parts to the whole. Characterizing the knowledge behind such interactive ventures has proved to be challenging. This article attempts to characterize the knowledge basic to grooves first by concentrating on ‘the groove’ as it is practised in soul, rhythm and blues, jazz fusion and various other popular genres, and second by focusing on cognitive knowledge structures called conceptual models. It is argued that musicians rely on such structures to produce grooves, and that listeners make use of similar structures to understand them. Grooves from the music of Eric Clapton, Miles Davis and James Brown are discussed, and conceptual models for each are developed.

For several years, a research project focused on the study of terminological uses of lexical semantics has been developed. From this investigation, specifically, in the terminographical praxis of a dictionary of the terminological uses of lexical semantics, we are observing considerably more conceptual content than could be expected, as this is a lexicon of the technical uses of lexical semantics, rather than one of technicisms. This means that, starting from explanatory sub-indices, it is necessary to create as many terminological documents as there are different acceptions for each lexicographical entry. In this article, besides presenting the methodological procedure used for our explanatory model of terminological representation, as well as the terminological graphic interface, we will focus on the study of the conceptual relations existing in this specialized area. These will appear in a terminographic interface through nodes showing the type of relationship existing among terminological uses. Our main aim is to prove, by means of the analysis of a series of terminological units, how the different conceptual relationships constitute a relevant rule for linguistic behaviour in the identification and establishment of the various uses and sub-uses corresponding to each terminographical entry.

The book offers a novel approach for analyzing natural language texts and representing relevant information in a metalinguistic database structure. Methodological principles underlying the processing techniques are the same at all stages. They draw on an empirically-based theory providing for the well-groundedness and consistency of the rules and preventing any possible subjectivity. The ultimate goal of the processing is a conceptual structure made up of elements referring to extralinguistic objects and situations. The elements are assigned ontological properties and linked together by conceptual relations. This makes it possible to extract “pure” information from the text, its reliability being dependent solely on the author.

The effect of set (to integrate or differentiate), characterization (evaluatively distinct or indistinct groups), and conceptual structure (strong or weak relations among concepts) on comprehension of a social situation was studied. Eighty-three students judged groups similar to those in the story on 12 dimensions, read set instructions, read story, judged actual groups in the story, and completed a comprehension test of the story. When characters were evaluatively indistinct, judges with strong conceptual relations comprehended more when set to differentiate than integrate while judges with weak relations comprehended more when set to integrate rather than differentiate. When characters were evaluatively distinct, there were no significant effects. Also, judges with strong relations comprehended more when relatedness was maintained in their impressions of groups in the story. Judges with weak relations tended to comprehend more when conceptual differentiation was maintained, but the effect did not reach significance.

Введение. Рассмотрена специфика юридического дискурса в аспекте его институциональной принадлежности и пространственной концептуализации метафорической терминологии. Цель статьи – выявить взаимосвязь между пространственной (горизонталь/вертикаль) концептуализацией метафорической терминологии русского юридического дискурса и системой классификации законодательства Российской Федерации. Материал и методы. Рассматривается понятие «юридический дискурс», а также его специфика через призму отраслевой классификации законодательной системы России. Концептуальная структура законодательства в виде горизонтальной классификации по отраслям права и вертикальной иерархической системы метафоричности проявляется через терминологию юридического дискурса. Результаты и обсуждение. Концептуализация в области метафорической терминологии напрямую отражает концептуальную структуру области права. Несмотря на разнообразие оснований типологизации юридического дискурса, концептуализация знаниевых структур зависит от отрасли права. Метафорические термины выступают конструктами определенной отрасли юридического дискурса, транслируя особые концепты ментальности относительно объектов в рамках данного института права. Заключение. При анализе специфики институционального юридического дискурса обнаружена обусловленность концептуализации знаний, которые привлекаются для метафорического моделирования юридической терминологии. Номинативные средства трансляции системы понятий базируются на терминологической понятийной системе и обусловлены юридическим контекстом (отраслью). Состав знаниевых структур терминологии юридического дискурса обусловлен эволюцией правового знания в рамках языковой и социкультурной принадлежности. Introduction. The article highlights the specifics of the legal discourse in the aspect of its institutional interdependence and space conceptualization of metaphor terminology. The aim of the article is to identify the interrelation between the SPACE (horizontal/vertical) conceptualization of the metaphorical terminology of the Russian legal discourse and the horizontal line classification by branches of law and the vertical hierarchical system of the Russian legislation system. Material and methods. The legal discourse notion and its specificity is considered through the prism of legislative system branch classification accepted in the Russian Federation. The conceptual structure of the legislation system arranged in the form of the horizontal line classification by branches of law and the vertical hierarchical system of conceptual metaphor representation is realized through the terminology of the legal discourse. Results and discussion. Conceptualization in the field of metaphor terminology directly reflects the conceptual structure of the law branch. Although there is a broad variety of grounds for classification typology, the conceptualization of knowledge structures depends directly on the branch of law. Legal branch metaphor terms are constructs of a particular branch of legal discourse, which transfer special concepts of mentality regarding the objects of a particular branch of legal discourse. Conclusion. The analysis of the specifics of the institutional legal discourse reveals the conditionality and interdependence of the knowledge conceptualization within metaphor modeling in the legal terminology. The nominative means for the concepts system transfer are based on the terminology concept system and are determined mainly by the legal context (i.e. legal branch). The content of the knowledge structures in the legal discourse terminology is determined and influenced by the evolution of the legal knowledge within the framework of language and socio-cultural community.
