Research shows that news media around the world tend to represent ethnic minorities in ways which nurture distorted views and invite negative attitudes. Scholars have also emphasised that, in contemporary societies, a political climate has emerged which has made overt racism unacceptable and social taboos leading to racist statements are increasingly being managed and disguised in order to avoid direct accusations. In this paper we use Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA) to carry out an in-depth analysis of a Romanian television news report—selected from a larger corpus—which addressed the situation of the Roma migrants in Norway. We show how this medium, with editing techniques, voice-overs, sound effects and captions, has its own subtleties for communicating racism in ways that are less obvious at a casual viewing. The case we analyse reports on a Norwegian/EU project to build a factory in Romania, so that Roma migrants can return home to work rather than live and beg on the streets of Oslo.

This article examines the role that the global television news agencies play in the handling of user generated content (UGC) video from Syria. In the almost complete absence of independent journalists, Reuters, Associated Press and Agence France-Presse are sourcing citizen videos from YouTube channels and passing it on to their clients. This article examines the verification processes that the agencies undertake to check on the veracity of this material and asks whether the agencies have abandoned independent journalism to activists. This article provides a comparative analysis of two months’ worth of UGC videos from Syria that were broadcast by the global news agencies after Russia joined the bombing campaign in Syria in late 2015. It analyses the content, verification processes and information that the agencies give their clients about this material. Through interviews with senior editors from the three organisations, questions of certainty versus probability are explored, along with ethical arguments about propaganda versus information transparency. The global news agencies are the engine drivers of international news coverage and their decisions and interpretation feed directly into the media ecology of mainstream and then alternative media.

News from afar sometimes seems to bear an uncanny resemblance to one's own remembered past. This is not because of the banal redundancy of events, but because of memory's inclination to refurbish itself in contemporary designs and novel images. In 1994 I was in northern Sumatra collecting stories from Karo veterans of the Indonesian war of national independence. Every night the television news offered more horrifying pictures of ethnic violence from around the world. In central Africa, roadways were filled with thousands of starving, desperate people traveling toward unknown destinations. This made a big impression on my Karo informants. “That's exactly how it was here,” they told me over and over. “I saw it on TV last night. I told the kids, ‘We were just like that during the evacuation.' Nothing to eat. No clothes. We were living like animals.”

This research paper aims at figuring out the way in which the world perceives the Islamophobic incidents. Such a global perception can be obtained from employing a kind of pervasive discourse that is emitted from global institutions and directed to the world in general. Thus, the conducted linguistic evaluation has targeted the news reports as a kind of global media discourse. The linguistic theory employed for language evaluation is Martin and White’s (2005) theory of appraisal. Three categories are classified in the appraisal theory: attitude, engagement, and graduation. Attitude is subdivided into effect, judgment, and appreciation; engagement into monogloss and hetergloss, and graduation into force and focus. The methodology works on three variables in the Islamophobic incident: the aggressor, the victim and motive. The orientation of investigation works to identify the attitude of affect directed from the report towards the victim, judgement towards the behavior of the aggressor, and appreciation towards the motive of the incident. The research also identifies the features of these attitudes as being negative or positive, the types (sub- classifications), engagement (monogloss or heterogloss), and graduation (force and focus) of the spotted attitudes. The data consists of twelve news reports selected, according to their topic, from three News agencies: BBC, Independent, and Fox News. The analysis has revealed that, contrary to many claims, news reports tend to adopt a neutral stance towards Muslims and Non- Muslims. They tend to portray the Islamophobic incidents as close to reality as possible.

Transformations to the production routines in telejournalism caused by how news is now being produced was the motivation for our doctoral research. This article is a part of this study analyzes the emergence of a new news-value behind the process of selecting what will or will not be broadcast on television news: the unique flagrant of co-production. This new news-value is connected to co-producers and their more active role in news programs. Co-producers are not cameramen at television stations, news agencies, or press services. They are citizens who capture images which are then used in television news broadcasts. The study was based on participant observation (WOLF, 1997), semi-structured interviews and a content analysis (HERSCOVITZ, 2007) of Rede Globo National News in Brazil. In our understanding, journalists select these images in order to create effects of participation of the represented real.As transformações nas rotinas produtivas do telejornalismo provocadas pela maneira como as notícias estão sendo produzidas motivaram nossa pesquisa de doutorado. Este artigo é parte desse estudo e tem como objetivo analisar o surgimento de um novo valor-notícia no processo de seleção do que será ou não veiculado nos noticiários televisivos: o flagrante único de coprodução. Esse novo valor-notícia está atrelado a atuação mais ativa por parte dos coprodutores nos telejornais. Os coprodutores não são cinegrafistas das emissoras de televisão, nem de agências de notícias, nem de assessorias de imprensa. São cidadãos que captam imagens, que acabam sendo usadas nos telejornais. O estudo foi feito a partir da observação participante (WOLF, 1997), entrevistas semiestruturadas e também da análise de conteúdo (HERSCOVITZ, 2007) do Jornal Nacional da Rede Globo. No nosso entendimento, os jornalistas selecionam essas imagens com a intenção de criar efeitos de participação do real representado.        La transformación en las rutinas productivas causada por la manera como las noticias estan siendo produccidas han motivado nuestra investigación doctoral. Este artículo es parte de este estudio y tiene como meta analizar la aparición de un nuevo valor-noticia en la selección de lo que será transmitido en el telediario: el flagrante único de coproducción. Este nuevo valor-noticia está relacionado con la atuación más activa por parte de los coprodutores en los telediarios. Los coproductores no son cámaras de estaciones de televisión, ni de agencias de noticias, ni de oficina de prensa. Son ciudadanos que capturan imágenes, utilizadas en los noticiarios televisivos. El estudio fue hecho a partir de la observación participante (WOLF, 1997), entrevistas semiestructuradas y también de la análisis de contenido (HERSCOVITZ, 2007) de lo telediario Jornal Nacional de la Rede Globo, en Brasil. En nuestro entendimiento, los periodistas eligen las imagines con la intención de crear efectos de participación en lo real representado.

Since the emergence of news agencies in the world, these agencies have become part of the global and local media scene, and newspapers cannot dispense with the services provided by agencies, especially the major news agencies in the world, which are the French Sons Agency, the British Sons Agency, the two American news agencies, the Associated Press and the United Press, as these agencies have become It controls the flow of news across the world, and newspapers prefer to rely on them for news due to the low cost and easy access to news. In Jordan, like other countries of the world, the media relies heavily on news agencies to obtain news, as major news agencies are relied upon to obtain international and Arab news, while the Jordanian Sons Agency "Petra" is relied upon to obtain local news. The Jordanian News Agency dominates the Jordanian newspapers that publish the news issued by this agency, which is considered the official and only official agency in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. This agency focuses on publishing official news, especially news issued by the royal court, the presidency of the government and other official institutions, as there is almost a monopoly on these news. By the agency that provides its services to Jordanian newspapers, Jordanian news sites, and radio and television stations for free. This study is classified within descriptive research, and the researcher relied on the survey method. Three Jordanian daily newspapers were tracked, namely Al-Rai, Al-Dustur, and Al-Ghad. All news published in these three newspapers were scanned for a period of fifteen days. The study revealed that 38% of the news published in these newspapers Extracted from Jordan News Agency The study also found that the three daily newspapers under consideration depend heavily on the Jordan News Agency for news This makes the relationship between agencies and newspapers almost completely dependent.
