A novel triphenylene-based discotic liquid crystal compound was synthesized in this study. The chemical structures of compounds were characterized by 1HNMR spectra, FT-IR spectra and were confirmed. The phase transition behavior was studied in the combination of texture observation by DSC and POM equipped with a temperature-controllable hot-stage. The object compound showed liquid crystal phase and the results showed that columnar liquid crystal phase between 90.1°C and 138.1 °C during heating.

A new HBC derivative HBC-C17containing 6 odd-carbon alkyl chains surrounding the hexabenzocoronene core was synthesized, and investigated as discotic liquid crystal along with HBC-C13and HBC-C15. The thermal behaviors have been investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). And mesomorphic phase behavior of HBC-C17was observed by polarizing optical microscopy (POM). A remarkable variation in the phase transition temperatures was observed for these three HBC derivatives (HBC-C13, HBC-C15and HBC-C17). Moreover, the mesomorphism of these HBC derivatives can be compared with HBC-C12, HBC-C14and other HBCs with even carbon alkyl chains, meanwhile the relationship between the length of substitutes and thermal properties of HBCs is also studied.

Two HBC derivatives (HBC-C13and HBC-C15), both containing 6 odd-carbon alkyl chains surrounding the rigid plane core, were investigated as discotic liquid crystal. The difference between their thermal behaviors has been investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Their mesomorphic phase behavior was observed by polarizing optical microscopy (POM). A remarkable odd-even effect in the phase transition temperatures was observed for all HBC derivatives (HBC-C12, HBC-C13, HBC-C14, HBC-C15and HBC-C16).

The arrangement of nanoscale building blocks into patterns with microscale periodicity is challenging to achieve via self-assembly processes. Here, we report on the phase transition-driven collective assembly of gold nanoparticles in a thermotropic liquid crystal. A temperature-induced transition from the isotropic to the nematic phase leads to the assembly of individual nanometre-sized particles into arrays of micrometre-sized aggregates, whose size and characteristic spacing can be tuned by varying the cooling rate. This fully reversible process offers hierarchical control over structural order on the molecular, nanoscopic, and microscopic level and is an interesting model system for the programmable patterning of nanocomposites with access to micrometre-sized periodicities.
