For over two centuries, the College was the characteristic form of higher education in the United States, and the College was closely allied to the church in a predominantly Protestant land. The university became the characteristic form of American higher education starting in the late nineteenth Century, and universities long continued to reflect the nation's Protestant culture. By about 1900, however, Catholics and Jews began to enter universities in increasing numbers. What was the experience of Jewish students in these institutions, and how did authorities respond to their appearance? These questions will be addressed in this article by focusing on the Jewish presence at the University of Illinois in the early twentieth Century. Religion, like a red thread, is interwoven throughout the entire fabric of this story.

Abstract Background Among the processes to be experienced by any organization during its establishment is the formation of an organizational identity. This process can be understood as the activity and event through which an organization becomes unique in the mind of its members. An organizational identity leads to an identification and both are directly associated with the success of an institution. This study is about a public higher education institution in health in its early years, with distinctive characteristics in the country where it is situated. In spite of having been successful in the graduation of its students it has fragile institutional bases, lack of autonomy and internal problems common to other institutions of this type. Thus, this study was conducted to understand how this institution defined itself among its own members, the elements of its identity and what justified its relative success despite its weaknesses. Methods A mixed-method approach was used to evaluate how a representative portion of this organization identifies with it. For the qualitative study two focus groups were conducted with transcripts submitted to content analysis proposed by Bardin, culminating in results from which a Likert scale-based questionnaire was elaborated and applied to 297 subjects. Results There were six central elements of the organizational identity made evident by the focus groups: political / ideological conflict; active teaching and learning methodologies; location / separation of campuses; time of existence; teaching career; political-administrative transformations. The quantitative analysis revealed in more detail the general impressions raised in the focus groups. Most results were able to demonstrate distinct identifications of the same identity with its exposed weaknesses. Conclusions Lack of autonomy, administrative and structural shortcomings and ideological or political conflicts presented themselves as problems capable of destabilizing the identity of a public higher education institution. On the other hand, one way to combat such problems is through the development of the institution itself, particularly by becoming more active and useful to the community and seeking in a common interest to the higher administration agencies.

The discipline of political science in the United States evolved in tandem with the development of democratic education and the modern university system. Since the early years of the twentieth century, political science has been an academic discipline housed in universities and colleges, and most political scientists earn their living as university or college teachers. And yet as individual academics or as a discipline, we rarely stand back from our institutional environment and ask hard questions about what is happening with higher education and what this means for the practice of political science. Suzanne Mettler does precisely this in Degrees of Inequality: How Higher Education Politics Sabotaged the American Dream. And so we have invited a range of political science scholars, many with extensive experience as university leaders, to comment on her book and its implications for the future of political science.

Presentation skills are considered as one of the most important proficiencies needed for higher education and future careers for teachers. The present study identifies the challenges faced by prospective teachers during classroom oral presentations while studying at a teacher training institute, Institute of Education and Research, (IER). The participants of the study were 400 prospective teachers enrolled in different programs of teacher education at IER. Independent variables were measured, number of semesters already completed at the institute, gender and GPA in the completed semesters. A questionnaire was developed comprising three main sections: personal traits, oral presentation skills and peers and teachers. The statements were developed on a five-point Likert Scale to know the opinion of prospective teachers regarding challenges involved in oral presentations. In addition, a semi-structured interview was conducted from thirty prospective teachers to probe results obtained from quantitative analysis and investigate reasons behind emerging challenges. The findings revealed that prospective teachers experienced medium level of difficulties in oral presentations with mild tendency towards high rank.  There was no significant difference found in the results regarding the number of semester students already completed, GPA and gender in general, whereas, statistically significant difference was found on factor peer and teachers with respect to variable gender only. Analysis of qualitative data revealed tangible reasons behind the challenges of oral presentations such as second language, personal traits and use of technology. There is a need to encourage sharing of ideas, discussions and presentations in the classrooms right from the early years of school through higher education in order to enable learners to become confident, vocal and effective teachers.

Transitions can affect students throughout their time at university. This study aims to show the potential of an additional, non-assessed placement in supporting MA3 Initial Teacher Education (ITE) students with skills thought to benefit transitions. Much of the research around student transitions focuses upon transitions into and out of higher education. In addition, within the MA ITE programme, students perceive challenges in transitioning into Professional Practice during their four year programme. A pilot study was undertaken to support third year MA ITE students in developing skills and attributes associated with the enhancement theme of student transitions in higher education: self-efficacy; reflection; and connectedness. The study involved MA3 students visiting an Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) setting in one local authority, one afternoon a week for eight weeks, the aim of the placement being for them to gain experience in playing and communicating with younger children, prior to their official early years placement. Initial findings from student focus group discussions suggest that students perceived that the study did help to support them in further developing transition skills and attributes.

Academic and professional recognition of engineering degrees is an important problem in higher education and human resources mobility. The chapter presents a review of academic and professional recognition systems features in Cyprus and Russia. Both Russia (non-EU-member country) and Cyprus (EU-member country) are Bologna countries, use similar education curricula, and will potentially follow the qualification framework in the European Higher Education Area. However, national qualification frameworks are different. The chapter discusses the academic and professional recognition systems features in Cyprus. Then the Russian system of engineering degrees is explained and the academic and professional recognition approach is clarified. Case studies for both countries are outlined. A comparison of the academic and professional recognition systems features in Cyprus and Russia is given.
