Wild edible plant species found in Ağrı are nutritionally and economically relevant. Plants are collected by the villagers and brought to the market for sale in the spring. Interest in these plants responds to the increasing demand for organic and natural food. In this study, 350 in-depth face-to-face interviews with villagers about the edible plants used in Ağrı (7 districts, 35 villages) were conducted in the region from April 2016 to October 2017. The species, parts used and their consumption and preservation techniques were analyzed and documented. Some of the wild edible plant species are consumed cured or canned, raw or cooked, dried, and some are frozen. The collected 100 wild edible species belong to 25 different plant families. Species are consumed as vegetables (91), spices (19), beverages (16), subterranean parts (5), fruits (3), seeds (3) and exudates (2). The most important species according to their cultural importance were: Amaranthus retroflexus, Beta trigyna, Gundelia tournefortii, Mentha longifolia, Polygonum persicaria, Rumex scutatus, Tragopogon porrifolius subsp. longirostris, and Urtica dioica. Leaves and young shoots were the most frequently used parts. Our study shows that wild edible plants are still well known and used by the local people of Ağrı as a food source. The documented data on these plants herein could be used as baseline information for further investigations on nutritional contents, as they could have the potential to become valuable nutrition sources.

The present study deals with the exploration, identification and future potentialities of the wild edible plant species of Gadchiroli district. The ethnobotanical survey of the region resulted in the documentation of 73wild plant species that are consumed by the Gondi, Madia, Kawar and Pardhan. Out of these, 56species belong to 52 genera 32 dicotyledonous families, while 17 species belong to 15 genera are from 9 monocotyledonous families.

ABSTRACT Traditional medicine is a part of health care practice by local inhabitants residing in the peculiar landscape of the Himalaya. The edible plant species are used to fulfill dietary requirements as well as to cure various ailments. The present study represents the diversity, distribution and ethnobotanical aspect of wild fruit species from the foothill region of Dhauladhar Range, Kangra Valley, northwestern Himalaya, India. Total 37 edible plant species belong to 28 genera and 20 families were noticed, where family Rosaceae, Rutaceae and Muraceae are the most dominant. The GIS-based classification showed a high diversity of the edible plants in the south-eastern part of the study area, while isolated patches in low and high plant diversity reveal the effect of the habitat diversity and regional microclimate. The studies based upon indigenous knowledge are very important for searching for new potential and resource management. The data collected for the potential use and the spatial distribution will provide new insight into modern research for sustainable management of resources.

The study was carried out as a kind of documentation of the used of wild edibles plants by the people in Bataw village, East Jaintia Hills. The results show that there are 35edible plants and belonging to 26 families being taken by the people of Bataw village as food. The mode of utilisation of wild edible plant includes 12 plant species used as vegetables, 11 species eaten as raw and 12 species consume as raw and as well as vegetable. The vast overexploitation of these indigenous wild edible plants has led to the over decline of these species. Therefore steps should be taken to protect such resources and further inventories need to undertake to understand their nutritional benefits and their long term sustenance.

Wild edible plant species diversity in Pinus gerardiana forests of district Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh was assessed following quadrat method using stratified random sampling. A total of 55 plant species comprising of five trees, 21 shrubs and 29 herb species have been recorded in the study area. Out of the total recorded plant species, 54.55 per cent were edible and 45.45 per cent were non-edible. Among trees, P. gerardiana was recorded with the highest density of 206.77 trees/ha, basal area of 22.43 m2/ha and IVI value of 252.81. Among edible shrubs a rarely used plant, Daphne oleoides was the most dominant species with highest density (0.21 bushes/9m2), frequency (21.23%) and IVI (71.55). In case of herbs, Thymus serphyllum had the highest density of 2.91 individuals/m2, frequency (12.04%) and IVI (31.57). During the present study, it has been observed that the P. gerardiana is an important commercial tree species exploited for its edible nuts. However due to over-exploitation, grazing, habitat degradation and other biotic threats its natural regeneration is dwindling. Besides this important natural resource, other species viz., Prunus persica, Berberis aristata, Elaeagnus umbellata, Chenopodium album, Pyhtolacca acinosa etc., also have market potential, however adequate emphasis has not been laid on their propagation and conservation. The results also revealed that many wild species are under growing pressures from various anthropogenic factors. Therefore, it is suggested that large-scale awareness programmes on wild edible plants should be initiated and these species should be included in the forestry/rural plantation programmes. Further, propagation plan needs to be developed on important wild edible plant species and people should be encouraged to grow these wild edible plants of commercial importance which will reduce the pressure on the wild populations growing in the forest areas.

The analysis of wild plant exploration was carried out to document the wild edible plants of district Rajouri (J&K), India. The present investigation of wild edible plants were based on extensive and intensive field survey during 2009- 2011. A total of 58 wild edible plant species belonging to 50 genera and 39 families have been reported from the area. Rosaceae was the dominant family that represented 7 taxa, while Brassiceae, Fabaceae, Moraceae and Poaceae represented with 3 taxa each and other 33 families have less representation. Tree make up was the highest proportion of the edible species 28 (41%) followed by 26 were herbs (38%) and 14 were shrubs (21%). Based on the requirements/edibility, majority of the plant species (26 species) are commonly used as fruits, 14 serve as vegetables, 1 species as flavoring agents (spices), roots, tubers of 3 species are eaten as raw and seeds/grains from 8 species for various substitute of food, whereas 2 species are used in making special drinks.

Ethnomedicinal plants have a significant role in the lives of people of rural and tribal areas. Thousands of medicinal plant species are used to treat various diseases, including jaundice, and are considered an important therapeutic resource to minimize these diseases. Jaundice (icterus) is a chronic disease that occurs when the amount of bilirubin in the blood increases. This review describes different ethnomedicinal plants used for curing jaundice by tribal and rural people of Himachal Pradesh. The study reveals 87 ethnomedicinal plant species belonging to 51 different families, which are used for treating jaundice in Himachal Pradesh. These plants are arranged in a systematic way, which includes a description of their common name, botanical name, along with its family, plant parts used, region, and mode of use in tabulated form. Some of the plant extracts have already been explored for their phytochemical and pharmacological significance and proved their potential in the preparation of new medicines or drugs against the treatment of jaundice. This review is an attempt to highlight the indigenous knowledge of medicinal plants, which are specifically used for the treatment of jaundice. The data mentioned in the present review is compiled from various sources like existing literature, books, Google Scholar, and Scopus publications. Among all the observed plant species, most used medicinal plants for the treatment of jaundice include Justicia adhatoda, Emblica officinalis, Ricinus communis, Saccharum officinarum, Terminalia chebula, Berberis aristata, Cuscuta reflexa, and Tinospora cordifolia. Plants that are mostly utilized for the treatment of jaundice need to be scientifically validated by pharmacological analysis and should be subsequently used for the preparation of new drugs, which may prove far more beneficial than the existing one.
