Spatial distribution of total and bioavailable heavy metal contents in soil from agricultural, residential, and industrial areas in Sudan

In this study, 1165 surface soil samples for heavy metal analysis were collected in the Yutian County, Xinjiang, China. The factors that influence the spatial distribution of heavy metal elements in soils in the study area were analyzed by means of multivariate statistical analysis, geostatistics, spatial autocorrelation, spatial analysis and GIS technology. Results show that among 1165 soil samples, three of which had As contents greater than the risk screening values. The theoretical models for variation function of Cd and Pb were exponential model, while the theoretical models for variation function of Hg, As, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn were spherical model. Nugget value of Cd was less than 25%, indicated a relatively strong spatial correlation. Nugget value of other elements ranged between 25% and 50%, indicated significant spatial correlations. The spatial autocorrelation Moran's I index of soil heavy metal contents in the Yutian County was greater than 0. There was a positive spatial correlation distribution in the county scale. The spatial distribution of soil heavy metal contents in the Yutian County showed a general decreasing trend from the center of the study area to surrounding areas. Distribution of soil heavy metal contents in the Yutian County varied in different parent materials, soil types and land use patterns. Hg, As, Pb, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn in soil derived from the same source, contents of which were affected by soil texture.

AbstractIn the present study we examined the Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn contamination levels of the soils of Berehove, a small city in West-Ukraine. As a first step we determined the spatial distribution of the heavy metal contents of the urban soils; then, by studying the land use structure of the city and by statistical analysis we identified the major sources of contamination; we established a matrix of correlations between the heavy metal contents of the soils and the different types of land use; and finally, we drew a conclusion regarding the possible origin(s) of these heavy metals. By means of multivariate statistical analysis we established that of the investigated metals, Ba, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn accumulated in the city’s soils primarily as a result of anthropogenic activity. In the most polluted urban areas (i.e. in the industrial zones and along the roads and highways with heavy traffic), in the case of several metals (Ba, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) we measured concentration levels even two or three times higher than the threshold limit values. Furthermore, Cr, Fe and Ni are primarily of lithogenic origin; therefore, the soil concentrations of these heavy metals depend mainly on the chemical composition of the soil-forming rocks.

The article focuses on the study of change of containing heavy metals (zinc, copper, iron, cadmium, lead, arsenic) in the abiotic and biotic components of the Serepok river (Vietman) influenced by wastewater discharge from industrial areas. Heavy metal content was determined in the river water and bottom sediments in the four zones: above and within the boundaries of industrial regions Xoa Phu and Tam Thang and in two water reservoirs situated below the boundaries of those industrial areas. Tilapia Galilean ( Sarotherodon galilaeus ), Hemibagrus ( Hemibagrus ), and sazan ( Cyprinus carpio ) caught in these areas were the hydrobionts under study in which liver, gills, skeleton and muscles accumulation of heavy metals was detected. In the organs of fish caught in the river within industrial region, heavy metals concentration was 3-7 times higher. The greatest concentration of heavy metals was found in the liver and gills of fish caught in the boundaries of industrial regions, the least concentration was in the muscles. In most cases, significant correlation between heavy metal concentration in organs of fishes and in river water, bottom sediments has been revealed.
