Background: The care for people with mental illness falls on the family and community. The support system is a quintessential aspect of patient’s recuperation. However, some families experience the feeling of burden, loss, and stigma having a significant impact on the family’s quality of life.Purpose: This meta-synthesis explored the available literature on the experiences of the family about mental illness. Methods: A web-based literature search was conducted. An initial 1,952 studies were retrieved from Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, CINAHL and Ovid-based MEDLINE. Six qualitative studies were included in the review. Results: Findings revealed that family empowerment as the grand theme emerged from the perceived effects of mental illness on the family, the process of coping and their perspectives on family empowerment. Conclusion: Family empowerment offers an openness, readiness, and acceptance towards a holistic care for a family member with a mental illness.

The feasibility study was aimed to develop a web-based gaming tool for the therapy of alcohol use disorder to offer patients a cue-exposure-based extinction and decision training, enhanced with virtual reality. To increase the training effect, patients playfully experience situations that resemble critical real-life situations. For implementing the game, a combination of HTML5 and JavaScript was used. The application comes with an administrator interface, to allow editing the game content. Initially, we included 21 patients (Group 1), 18 suffering from alcohol use disorder and 3 using cannabis (18/3 male/female, mean age 39 ± 13 years). Considering the iterative process of a feasibility study, we developed the game design as suggested by participants of Group 1 and additionally included 11 novel participants (Group 2) (11 suffering from an alcohol use disorder, 7/4 male/female, mean age 46 ± 14 years). Basically, the game was very well received. Usability ratings were generally high, even in patients with little computer experience. Both groups rated the application as realistic, and would generally be willing to play it on a daily basis. Given that SALIENCE is inexpensive, easily available, and engaging, it might be a reasonable add-on intervention to the standard treatment of alcohol use disorder.

This article presents an evaluation of the effectiveness of an applied mindfulness intervention for stress reduction delivered to Paralympic leaders prior to the Paralympic Games. The intervention group of Swedish Paralympic leaders ( n = 10) received a mindfulness intervention of eight web-based seminars, while a Norwegian reference group ( n = 6) received no intervention. Three assessments were performed for both samples: at baseline, post-intervention and six weeks post-intervention. The evaluation indicated intervention effects of higher psychological flexibility ( p = .03), less rumination ( p = .02) and lower perceived stress ( p = .001), and offers initial support for the applied usefulness of a web-based mindfulness training program as a supplement in stress-reduction programs for elite sport leaders. General challenges from an applied sport psychology perspective related to the implementation of mindfulness interventions in samples with experienced high levels of stress and perceived time-constraints are discussed.
