AbstractPentaerythritol (PE) and neopentylglycol (NPG) are organic molecular crystals which have hydrogen-bonded lattices with layered- and chain-type structures, respectively. The PE undergoes solid-state phase transitions at 416K, from tetragonal to a cubic (γ’) structure and NPG also undergoes this transition at 317K from a monoclinic to a cubic (γ) structure. The phase transitions in binary PE-NPG solid solutions show more than one solid-solid transition in which the NPG-rich β transforms to γ at a constant temperature but the transition of the PE-rich a phase to γ’ passes through a two-phase field at a temperature that varies as a function of composition. Structural analyses by high-temperature x-ray diffractometry have revealed some new, interesting transitions. A phase diagram has been constructed for 0-30 mol% NPG in the PE-NPG system, using x-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry results, and work is in progress to complete this diagram. The variation of lattice parameters as a function of temperature in the α, γ and γ’ phases for PE+20 mol% NPG are presented here, together with a discussion of phase transitions for certain compositions.

In aqueous solution planar bis(1,2-dithiooxalato)nickelates(II), [Ni(dto)2]2- react with lanthanide ions (Ln3+) to form pentanuclear, hetero-bimetallic complexes of the general composition [{Ln(H2O)n}2{Ni(dto)2}3] · x H2O (n = 4 or 5; x = 9 - 12). Two complexes of this series, [{Pr(H2O)5}2{Ni(dto)2}3] · 11 H2O, Pr2Ni3 1 and [{Gd(H2O)5}2{Ni(dto)2}3] · 11 H2O, Gd2Ni3 2 were synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray structure analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, and IR spectroscopy. All Ln2Ni3 complexes crystallize as monoclinic crystals in the space group P21/c.

As part of our interest into the bioinorganic chemistry of gallium, gallium(III) complexes of the azole ligands 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (btd), 1,2,3-benzotriazole (btaH), and 1-methyl-4,5-diphenylimidazole (L) have been isolated. Reaction of btaH or btd withGaBr3orGaCl3resulted in the mononuclear complexes[GaBr3(btaH)2](1) and[GaCl3(btd)2](2), respectively, while treatment ofGaCl3with L resulted in the anionic complex(LH)2[GaCl4](3). All three complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and IR spectroscopy, while their antiproliferative activities were investigated against a series of human and mouse cancer cell lines.

AbstractThe tridentate N-donor ligand 2,6-di(2-oxazolyl)pyridine (L) reacts with AgClO4 and AgPF6 to yield two new complexes, {[Ag5(L)5](ClO4)5}n (1) and {[Ag5(L)5](PF6)5}n (2), which have been characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffractions, IR spectroscopy, and elemental and thermogravimetric analyses. Complexes 1 and 2 are isotypic, displaying helical chain structures. The fluorescence properties of 1 and 2 were investigated.
