Abstract Infrared photoreflectance (PR) spectra of In(Ga,Al)As/GaAs metamorphic heterostructures have been obtained using a novel photomodulation FTIR spectroscopy technique. An analysis of the PR spectra features allowed us to estimate the critical point energies corresponding to the direct interband transitions in various regions of the In(Ga,Al)As heterostructures, and distinguish the PR signals originating from Fabry-Perot interference. Observation of Franz-Keldysh oscillations originating from the InAlAs virtual substrate and an InGaAs waveguide layer has enabled determination of the built-in electric field intensities within the heterostructures. The obtained results open up possibilities for contactless control of free carrier concentration in In(Ga,Al)As/GaAs metamorphic heterostructures developed for growth of emitters of mid-IR spectral range.

Gentiana rigescens Franch (Gentianaceae) is a famous medicinal plant for treatments of rheumatism, convulsion, and jaundice. Comprehensive investigation of different parts and cultivation years of this plant has not yet been conducted. This study presents the quantitative and qualitative characterization of iridoid glycosides from G. rigescens performed by HPLC and FTIR spectroscopy techniques. The accumulations of loganic acid, swertiamarin, gentiopicroside, and sweroside were determined. Results indicated that their content and distribution in different parts and cultivation years exhibit great variations. Gentiopicroside was identified as the most abundant compound among iridoid glycosides and its highest level was observed in the root of 2-year-old plant. With respect to qualitative variation of metabolic profile, the 1800–800 cm−1 band of FTIR spectra successfully discriminated different parts and cultivation years with the aid of PLS-DA. In addition, combined with PLSR, the feasibility of FTIR spectroscopy for determination of gentiopicroside was investigated by selecting characteristic wavelengths (1800–800 cm−1), which presented a good performance with a residual predictive deviation (RPD) of 3.646. Our results suggested that HPLC and FTIR techniques can complement each other and could be simultaneously applied for comparing and analyzing different parts and cultivation years of G. rigescens.

Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) method has been used to investigate the optical properties of nanostructured PbSe thin films obtained by chemıcal bath deposıtıon (CBD) method. For a better resolution of the structure of interband transitions and for determination of critical points, the function obtained by numerical differentiation of the experimental data of the dielectric function is used. The theoretical fitting was carried out using the "Graphical Analysis" program. The best fit ıs obtained with a 2D-critical point line shape (m = 0) for E=2÷3 eV energy region. One critical point corresponding to Eg = 2,5 eV have been determined. This value is attributed to the L4L6 transition of the Brillouin zone.

Corrosion of reinforcement is an important durability concern for the structures exposed to coastal regions. Since corrosion of reinforcement involves long periods of time, impressed current technique is usually used to accelerate the corrosion of reinforcement in laboratories. Characterization of impressed current technique was the main focus of this research, which involved determination of optimum chloride content and minimum immersion time of specimens for which the application of Faraday’s law could be efficient. To obtain optimum chloride content, the electrolytes in the corrosion cell were prepared similar to that of concrete pore solutions. Concrete prisms of 200 mm by 200 mm by 300 mm were used to determine the minimum immersion time for saturation. It was found that the optimum chloride content was 35 gm/L and the minimum immersion time for saturation was 140 hours. Accounting the results, a modified expression based on Faraday’s law was proposed to calculate weight loss due to corrosion. Journal of Engineering Science 11(1), 2020, 93-99

Eternal return is the paradox that accounts for the interplay between difference and repetition, a dynamic at the heart of Deleuze's philosophy, and Blanchot's approach to this paradox, even and especially through what it elides, further illuminates it. Deleuze draws on Blanchot's characterisations of difference, forgetting, and the unlivable to depict the ‘sense’ produced via eternal return, which, for Blanchot, is where repetition implicates or ‘carries’ pure difference. However, for Deleuze, difference and the unlivable are also developed by the living repetition or ‘contraction’ of habit, which results in his distinctive characterization of ‘force’, ‘levity’, and sense in eternal return.
