Abstract Single crystals of the amino acid glycine (Gly) C2H5NO2 doped with croconic acid (CA) C5H2O5 were synthesized by evaporation from an aqueous solution. The crystals grow in the form of hexagonal pyramids or thin plates. Analysis of polarized Raman scattering spectra (excitation wavelength of 532 nm) measured at room temperatures showed that crystals in the form of pyramids corresponded to γ-polymorph (γ-Gly), and crystals in the form of plates to α-polymorph of glycine (α - Gly). The presence of croconic acid molecules in the crystals is confirmed by the change in their color from white in pure Gly crystals to light or dark yellow, characteristic of CA crystals, as well as the presence of weak lines corresponding to CA in the Raman spectra. In single crystals of both Gly:CA polymorphs, strong green luminescence significantly exceeding the intensity of Raman scattering is observed in the range 400 - 700 nm with a maximum at 510 nm (2.44 eV) upon excitation at λ= 325 nm.

Te atoms were loaded into nanochannels of zeolite AFI single crystals. The polarized absorption and Raman scattering spectra were measured. The absorption spectra of Te loaded AFI showed large anisotropic properties. The absorption spectra of E//c deeply depended on the loading density of Te atoms. In low Te loading density, Te was adsorbed into the nanochannels in a dimer form whose absorption peak appeared at ca. 3.5 eV . In high loading density, Te form one dimensional nanowires inside the channels. Nanowire formation causes large anisotropic absorption and changes in the spectral shape.

The phonon anisotropy property of the GaN wurtzite crystal is studied using angular dependent Raman spectroscopy both theoretically and experimentally. The polarized Raman scattering spectra were recorded from cross-sections of c-axis oriented GaN films as a function of the angle between the incident laser polarization direction and the film normal direction in three different configurations. The Raman intensity of A1(TO) showed a sinusoidal dependence on the rotating angle, as also did the E1(TO) mode, while the E2 mode has a quite different behavior. The theoretical fit takes into account the susceptibility contribution and the phase differential of different vibrating elements.

ABSTRACTPolarized Raman scattering spectra at 300K and 20K are reported for a single crystal of La2CuO4-y before and after annealing in oxygen at 1000°C for 24 hours. Oxygenation strongly quenches the temperature sensitive line at ∼1430 cm-1 (for T ∼ 300K) in the “as grown” crystal, previously identified with magnon-pair excitation associated with two-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering. In addition, the phonon spectrum is greatly modified by the addition of oxygen, indicating a more uniform local crystalline environment after oxygenation. Raman scattering is thus a sensitive probe of the effect of oxygenation on the near surface magnetic and phonon properties of La2CuO4-y.
