Ammunitions stored in war fields have lifespans that are related to the single base propellants, as Nitrocellulose (NC), the main component of propelling gunpowder, decomposes naturally into an unstable substance, similar to other nitric acid esters. Decomposition is inevitable; however a decomposition product (NO2, NO3, and HNO3) and tranquillizer DPA (Diphenylamine), which have high reactivity, can be added to a propellant to restrain the induction of automatic catalysis by a decomposition product. The decay rate of the tranquillizer is also affected by the production rate of the decomposition product of NC. Thus, as the storage period of single base propellants lengthens, the reduction rate of the tranquillizer content increases. This paper presents a new methodology based on data mining and regression analysis for estimating the shelf-life of single base propellants using data from the ASRP to 105mm HE (KM1 and M1).

AbstractThe initial step of the thermal decomposition of NTO (5-nitro-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4- triazol-3-one) is determined by pulsed infrared laser pyrolysis of thin films. Rapid heating of the film and quenching to 77 K allows one to trap the initial decomposition products in the condensed phase and analyze them using transmission Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The initial decomposition product is CO2; NO2 and HONO are not observed. We propose a new mechanism for NTO decomposition in which CO2 is formed.

Abstract Based on the previously described bifunctional Lewis acid with a functional distance of the boron functions of 4.918(2) Å, the development of a further bifunctional, boron-containing Lewis acid with a wider functional distance is demonstrated. Again, a stannylated precursor was used and the Lewis-acidic boron functions were introduced by means of tin-boron exchange. The general suitability of this class of compounds for the formation of host-guest-complexes is demonstrated by NMR experiments and by solid-state structures using pyridine and TMPD (N 1,N 1,N 4,N 4-tetramethylbenzene-1,4-diamine) as Lewis basic guests. The influence of traces of moisture on the boron-containing, bifunctional Lewis acids was investigated by the structure elucidation of a decomposition product.
