Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of surface precision on the lubrication state of the roller chain under adequate and rare oil supply conditions, respectively. Design/methodology/approach The straightness error and roughness error of the pin generatrices were measured and the influence of surface precision on the lubrication behavior under steady state and reciprocating motion was studied through optical interference experiments. Findings The lubrication state is strongly influenced by the surface precision of the roller surface both under adequate oil supply and rare oil supply conditions. Originality/value In industrial applications, the machining errors of parts cannot be completely eliminated. Studying the influence of the surface precision on the lubrication behavior of pin–bush pairs can provide the experimental basis for the optimal design of the bush roller chains.

This paper compares the effects on the damping capacity of a squeeze-film damper of (a) changing the number of oil-feed holes to the central circumferential oil supply groove, (b) changing the sealing arrangement from end-seals to piston-ring seals, and (c) changing the position of the circumferential supply groove. The conclusions are that much improved damping performance is achieved by the piston-ring sealed arrangement. Unlike the end-sealed arrangement it is very little adversely influenced by a reduction in the number of oil-feed holes. The damping offered by either sealing arrangement is influenced only marginally by repositioning the supply groove.

The objective of this research is to study the lubricating property of oil-air lubrication on sliding friction element. The performance of sliding friction element under different lubrication parameters and preloads were investigated by measuring the element’s temperature and friction coefficient. The results show that oil air lubrication could complete the lubrication and cooling of sliding friction element. As the oil supply is increased at the same load, speed and air supply level, the temperature rise and friction coefficient decrease, but when the oil supply is increased to 15ml/h, they remain unchanged. As the air supply is increased at the same load, speed and oil supply level, the temperature rise decreases monotonically and the friction coefficient remains steady.

The tilted beam illumination method is used to improve the resolution comparing with the axial illumination mode. Using this advantage, a restoration method of several tilted beam images covering the full azimuthal range was proposed by Saxton, and experimentally examined. To make this technique more reliable it seems that some practical problems still remain. In this report the restoration was attempted and the problems were considered. In our study, four problems were pointed out for the experiment of the restoration. (1) Accurate beam tilt adjustment to fit the incident beam to the coma-free axis for the symmetrical beam tilting over the full azimuthal range. (2) Accurate measurements of the optical parameters which are necessary to design the restoration filter. Even if the spherical aberration coefficient Cs is known with accuracy and the axial astigmatism is sufficiently compensated, at least the defocus value must be measured. (3) Accurate alignment of the tilt-azimuth series images.
