Structurally sound bolted joints often fail due to loss of tightness. This is because the clamping load is affected by the application of the internal fluid pressure. A good design technique should therefore encompass most aspects of joint behaviour and produce efficient sealing performance within the clearly defined limits of the method used. This paper presents a simple analytical model based on an extension of the Taylor Forge approach taking into account flange rotation, flexibility of both the gasket and the bolts and, when applicable, the stiffness of the end closure. Examples will be discussed based on experimentally determined gasket properties.

End fittings are essential components in marine flexible pipe systems, performing the two main functions of connecting and sealing. To investigate the sealing principle and the influence of the temperature on the sealing performance, a hydraulic-thermal finite element (FE) model for the end fitting sealing structure was developed. The sealing mechanism of the end fitting was revealed by simulating the sealing behavior under the pressure penetration criteria. To investigate the effect of temperature, the sealing behavior of the sealing ring under different temperature fields was analyzed and discussed. The results showed that the contact pressure of path 1 (i.e., metal-to-polymer seal) was 31.7 MPa, which was much lower than that of path 2 (metal-to-metal seal) at 195.6 MPa. It was indicated that the sealing capacities were different for the two leak paths, and that the sealing performance of the metal-to-polymer interface had more complicated characteristics. Results also showed that the finite element analysis can be used in conjunction with pressure penetration criteria to evaluate the sealing capacity. According to the model, when the fluid pressures are 20 and 30 MPa, no leakage occurs in the sealing structure, while the sealing structure fails at the fluid pressure of 40 MPa. In addition, it was shown that temperature plays a significant role in the thermal deformation of a sealing structure under a temperature field and that an appropriately high temperature can increase the sealing capacity.

Abstract LNG (liquefied natural gas) cryogenic ball valve (CBV) is an important flow control device in LNG receiving stations. Its reliability directly affects the stability of the pipeline system, especially its damage or leak in the seat seal will seriously threaten the normal operation and the safety of LNG receiving stations. When LNG flows through the CBV, due to the interaction between fluid pressure and the valve structure, the hard sealing at the valve seat is not only subjected to the pre-tightening force of saucer spring, but also affected by the fluid pressure of the complex flow. Therefore, it is necessary to study the flow characteristics in the CBV and the hard sealing performance affected by the LNG. In this paper, the fluid dynamics and the contact stress on hard sealing performance in the CBV are analyzed. The pressure drop, pressure, and velocity distributions were analyzed, respectively. The contact stress on the hard sealing surfaces of the CBV with fluid pressure was analyzed by the fluid-structure coupling method. This work has a certain reference value for researching and mastering the hard sealing performance of cryogenic ball valves.

In this paper, the non-smooth surface technology is applied to the surface structure of the rectangular sealing ring, and a bionic sealing ring is designed. Two-dimensional axisymmetric models of rectangular and bionic sealing rings were established. Effects of pre-compression amount, fluid pressure, friction coefficient and reciprocating velocity on the static and dynamic sealing performance of two sealing rings were studied. The results show that the seal performance of the bionic sealing ring is greater than that of rectangular. The static seal performance increases with the increasing of fluid pressure and compression amount. Dynamic sealing performance in outward stroke is better than it in the inward stroke. Friction coefficient has a smaller effect on the bionic sealing ring’s sealing performance than rectangular sealing ring. Therefore, using the bionic sealing ring can improve the static and dynamic seal performances and prolong its service life in hydraulic systems, rotating machinery and reciprocating machinery.
