In this paper, the non-smooth surface technology is applied to the surface structure of the rectangular sealing ring, and a bionic sealing ring is designed. Two-dimensional axisymmetric models of rectangular and bionic sealing rings were established. Effects of pre-compression amount, fluid pressure, friction coefficient and reciprocating velocity on the static and dynamic sealing performance of two sealing rings were studied. The results show that the seal performance of the bionic sealing ring is greater than that of rectangular. The static seal performance increases with the increasing of fluid pressure and compression amount. Dynamic sealing performance in outward stroke is better than it in the inward stroke. Friction coefficient has a smaller effect on the bionic sealing ring’s sealing performance than rectangular sealing ring. Therefore, using the bionic sealing ring can improve the static and dynamic seal performances and prolong its service life in hydraulic systems, rotating machinery and reciprocating machinery.

Rubber O-rings are widely applied in the static and dynamic seals of machinery, energy, chemical, aviation, and other fields. Mechanical behavior and sealing performance of the O-ring were investigated in this paper. Effects of precompression amount, fluid pressure, friction coefficient on the static and dynamic sealing performances of the O-ring were studied. The results show that the maximum stress appears on the inside but not surface of the O-ring. The static sealing performance increases with the increasing of fluid pressure and compression amount. Reciprocating dynamic sealing performance of the rubber O-ring is different with its static sealing performance; the stress distribution and deformation are changing in reciprocating motion. Sealing performance in outward stroke is better than it in the inward stroke. Overturn of the O-ring occurs when the friction torque is greater than the torque that caused by fluid pressure in the inward stroke. Distortion, bitten, and fatigue failure are the main failure modes of the O-ring in the dynamic seal. Those results can be used in design, installation, and operation of rubber O-rings in static and dynamic seals.

In order to reduce the failure probability of rubber sealing rings in reciprocating dynamic seal, a new structure of sealing ring based on bionics was designed. The biomimetic ring has three concave ridges and convex bulges on each side which are very similar to earthworms. Bulges were circularly designed and sealing performances of the biomimetic ring in both static seal and dynamic seal were simulated by FEM. In addition, effects of precompression, medium pressure, speed, friction coefficient, and material parameters on sealing performances were discussed. The results show that von Mises stress of the biomimetic sealing ring distributed symmetrically in no-pressure static sealing. The maximum von Mises stress appears on the second bulge of the inner side. High contact stress concentrates on left bulges. Von Mises stress distribution becomes uneven under medium pressure. Both von Mises stress and contact stress increase when precompression, medium pressure, and rubber hardness increase in static sealing. Biomimetic ring can avoid rolling and distortion in reciprocating dynamic seal, and its working life is much longer than O-ring and rectangular ring. The maximum von Mises stress and contact stress increase with the precompression, medium pressure, rubber hardness, and friction coefficient in reciprocating dynamic seal.

In the process of gas charging and discharging of gas cylinder, the fluid pressure fluctuates causing fretting wear of rubber sealing ring, which affects the sealing performance. The model of O-ring that installed at the mouth of the gas cylinder was established to study the fretting wear in the static seal. Effects of fluid pressure, compression ratio, friction coefficient and temperature on the fretting wear of the O-ring were considered. The results show that the fretting wear of O-ring can be divided into non-contact region, slip region and sticky region. In the static seal, the compression ratio and friction coefficient are the main factors affecting the fretting wear. The sealing performance is greatly influenced on the compression ratio and it is less affected by the temperature. The junction of slip region and sticky region has the greatest probability of seal failure.

When the Stirling engine piston rod for reciprocating motion at a high speed under dry friction conditions, the temperature fall or pressure drop is mainly caused by uneven sealing ring deformation, increased wear and sealing performance fall. This article is introduced a cap seal rings of Stirling engine piston, study for friction and wear in theory under dynamic seal condition, and establish a rod seal test equipment to analysis the cap seal structure distortion and gauge wear in different working environments by experimental methods. Finally, come to the conclusion that when working medium pressure at 7 mpa, the cap seal performance is best. Keywords: Rod seal; cap seal structure; stress analysis

Non-contact hydraulic seal (clearance seal) reduce the leakage by the small clearance between the seal. Non-contact hydraulic seal is the simplest form of a seal. The sealing effect depends on the size of the clearance and pressure difference, the length and parts of the sealing surface quality. Among them, the clearance size of the greatest impact on the sealing performance. The hydraulic systems sealing mathematical and CFD model are built in this paper. Studies have shown that eccentricity ratio, seal clearance and pressure are has impact to hydraulic force and leakage. It should be considered in the engineering design.

Silicon rubber gaskets are commonly used in many industries for low pressure sealing conditions only. The research studies about the sealing performance improvement of a novel composite gasket made of the silicone rubber filled with ramie natural fibers in a bolted joint connection. In this research the sample of gasket consists of 4 different types of gasket i.e. a pure silicone rubber gasket and the silicone rubber composite gasket with 1, 2 and 3 layers of ramie fiber woven. The gaskets are tested using a water pressure testing equipment with a variation of internal fluid pressure and difference torques at 8 N.m, 12 N.m, 16 N.m and 20 N.m. The sealing performance is measured based on the maximum fluid pressure that can be hold by the gaskets before the fluid leaking occurred. The results show that the silicone rubber composite gaskets have better sealing performance comparing  with the pure silicone rubber gaskets where the silicon rubber gaskets capable to hold the internal fluid pressure until around 5 times rather  than pure silicon rubber gaskets (0.17 MPa comparing with 0.90 MPa). On the other hand the sealing performance of the composite gasket with 3 layers is almost 2 times better than the composite gasket with 1 layer and around 1.5 times better than the composite gasket with 2 layer of fiber woven.

GP 32 (molecular weight 35000) is a T4 bacteriophage protein that destabilizes the DNA helix. The fragment GP32*I (77% of the total weight), which destabilizes helices better than does the parent molecule, crystallizes as platelets thin enough for electron diffraction and electron imaging. In this paper we discuss the structure of this protein as revealed in images reconstructed from stained and unstained crystals.Crystals were prepared as previously described. Crystals for electron microscopy were pelleted from the buffer suspension, washed in distilled water, and resuspended in 1% glucose. Two lambda droplets were placed on grids over freshly evaporated carbon, allowed to sit for five minutes, and then were drained. Stained crystals were prepared the same way, except that prior to draining the droplet, two lambda of aqueous 1% uranyl acetate solution were applied for 20 seconds. Micrographs were produced using less than 2 e/Å2 for unstained crystals or less than 8 e/Å2 for stained crystals.

Abstract Objectives A large literature exists investigating the extent to which physical characteristics (e.g., strength, weight, and height) can be accurately assessed from face images. While most of these studies have employed two-dimensional (2D) face images as stimuli, some recent studies have used three-dimensional (3D) face images because they may contain cues not visible in 2D face images. As equipment required for 3D face images is considerably more expensive than that required for 2D face images, we here investigated how perceptual ratings of physical characteristics from 2D and 3D face images compare. Methods We tested whether 3D face images capture cues of strength, weight, and height better than 2D face images do by directly comparing the accuracy of strength, weight, and height ratings of 182 2D and 3D face images taken simultaneously. Strength, height and weight were rated by 66, 59 and 52 raters respectively, who viewed both 2D and 3D images. Results In line with previous studies, we found that weight and height can be judged somewhat accurately from faces; contrary to previous research, we found that people were relatively inaccurate at assessing strength. We found no evidence that physical characteristics could be judged more accurately from 3D than 2D images. Conclusion Our results suggest physical characteristics are perceived with similar accuracy from 2D and 3D face images. They also suggest that the substantial costs associated with collecting 3D face scans may not be justified for research on the accuracy of facial judgments of physical characteristics.

TiN coated films were prepared by a reactive ion physical vapor deposition method. In this research, we studied the relationships between textures and friction coefficient, erosion-corrosion resistance and corrosion resistance in textured TiN films. The surface roughness of (115) textured TiN films is lower than that of (111) textured TiN films. The friction coefficient of (115) textured surface is similar with that of (111) textured surface of TiN coated films. The erosion-corrosion and corrosion resistance of (115) textured surface is better than that of (111) textured surface of TiN coated films.

In this paper, we analyzed the current situation of water pollution sources near Macao airport, established a two-dimensional water exchange and water quality mathematical model near the project, and compared and simulated the reclamation schemes of Macao airport. According to the results of water exchange and COD calculation of water quality, the 80 m channel scheme was remarkably better than the 40 m one in terms of water exchange capacity and the possibility of achieving the water quality target. However, with the increase of channel width, the variation of water exchange rate and half exchange period would slow down. There was no significant difference in water exchange rate, water exchange period and water quality distribution between 80m channel and 120 m channel. The final scheme was to adopt the 80 m channel.
