The use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) is on the rise in the construction industry as more of its potential is being harnessed. The evolution of BIM models is a dynamic process where a project’s information is progressively developing during a project’s timeline. Although several studies track a project’s evolution from product and process perspectives, they do not necessarily track actual model dynamics occurring at the level of model elements for design management purposes. In this regard, this study introduces five variables to track changes witnessed across BIM model development using a visual dashboard designed to facilitate their interpretation and use by practitioners. The study applies the developed dashboard on an empirical case study project to test its usefulness and shortcomings. Results show that the dashboard can convey several design management aspects and can help design managers better maneuver the development of their designs.

The concepts of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Lean construction are increasingly popular and used for the purpose of improving the efficiency of construction projects. The Lean construction approach helps optimize the system, thereby minimizing the waste and increase the maximum amount of value for clients. This is in line with the effectiveness of BIM for the purpose of analyzing, evaluating, and managing projects based on the virtual information model before, during and after construction. The combination of BIM and Lean construction will certainly be the trend of the construction industry in the near future. This paper aims to analyze the integration of Lean construction principles in the BIM coordination process through a specific case study. The project management unit is responsible for managing and evaluating BIM models from consultants and contractors and serves as the project's BIM coordinator. The new construction method known as Industrialized Building System (IBS) offers several benefits compared to the Conventional Building System (CBS); however, IBS is perceived by most of the practitioners to be an expensive method for being utilized in construction industry. Whilst relatively numerous studies have been carried out on the subject of IBS and CBS methods, there has not been any exploiting building information modeling (BIM) as a useful tool to calculate quantities, time, and cost needed to construct building with each of the two aforementioned methods. The aim of this paper is to calculate cost of two similar buildings (one is constructed with IBS method and other one with CBS method) and compare them in terms of economy based on a chosen case study and same initial investment. To this end, the construction cost of buildings is calculated using BIM software, namely Revit Architecture and Navisworks Manage for modeling the chosen case study and estimating construction cost, respectively. The findings indicated that IBS was not economic in low investment of company; however, with investment on more than 100 units of IBS, this method was shown more economical compared to CBS method. In addition, the initial investment on IBS method could be returned when more than 200 units of IBS were implemented in the projects.

In the construction field, the Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology is becoming increasingly predominant and the standardization of its use is now an essential operation. This method has become widespread in recent years, thanks to the advantages provided in the framework of project management and interoperability. Hoping for its complete dissemination, it is unthinkable to use it only for new construction interventions. Many are experiencing what happens with the so-called Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM); that is, how BIM interfaces with Architectural Heritage or simply with historical buildings. This article aims to deal with the principles and working methodologies behind BIM/HBIM and modeling. The aim is to outline the themes on which to base a new approach to the instrument. In this way, it can be adapted to the needs and characteristics of each type of building. Going into the detail of standards, the text also contains a first study regarding the classification of moldable elements. This proposal is based on current regulations and it can provide flexible, expandable, and unambiguous language. Therefore, the content of the article focuses on a revision of the thinking underlying the process, also providing a more practical track on communication and interoperability.

Traditional energy analysis in Building Information Modeling (BIM) only accounts for the energy requirements of building operations during a portion of the occupancy phase of the building’s life cycle and as such is unable to quantify the true impact of buildings on the environment. Specifically, the typical energy analysis in BIM does not account for the energy associated with resource formation, recycling, and demolition. Therefore, a comprehensive method is required to analyze the true environmental impact of buildings. Emergy analysis can offer a holistic approach to account for the environmental cost of activities involved in building construction and operation in all its life cycle phases from resource formation to demolition. As such, the integration of emergy analysis with BIM can result in the development of a holistic sustainability performance tool. Therefore, this study aimed at developing a comprehensive framework for the integration of emergy analysis with existing Building Information Modeling tools. The proposed framework was validated using a case study involving a test building element of 8’ × 8’ composite wall. The case study demonstrated the successful integration of emergy analysis with Revit®2021 using the inbuilt features of Revit and external tools such as MS Excel. The framework developed in this study will help in accurately determining the environmental cost of the buildings, which will help in selecting environment-friendly building materials and systems. In addition, the integration of emergy into BIM will allow a comparison of various built environment alternatives enabling designers to make sustainable decisions during the design phase.

Bridge Information Modeling (BrIM) is considered an innovation in bridge engineering and construction industry. This paper presents a methodology for using BrIM as an assisting tool in performing detailed cost estimates. The methodology depends on integrating visualization feature of BrIM with specific attributes of the BrIM model intelligent components. A program developed using C# language is used to extract the visualization conclusions and other components’ attributes to MS Excel spreadsheet. This sheet assists in performing detailed cost estimate, and reviewing the estimate. The paper also presents a methodology for generating cash flow and required payments. This methodology depends on integrating the developed program with 4D feature of BrIM.

The application of Building Information Modeling has become a trend in construction industry, it is our duty to accelerate BIM application in recent years. Firstly, the paper generally introduced the concepts and characteristics of BIM, and pointed out the problems that existed in Chinas Project Management of Construction Enterprises, and theoretically, technically discussed the solutions to these issues with BIM technology in a qualitative way. At last, the paper proposed some suggestions and outlooks for the development and promotion of BIM technology in China.
