Introduction: Pharmacogenetic (PGx) implementation has lagged behind the development of drug/gene pair guidelines. Materials & methods: This was a prospective study assessing the integration of PGx through medication therapy management in an outpatient clinic. Variables collected included patient diagnosis, current medications, failed or discontinued medications, PGx results/recommendations, turnaround time and pre/post clinical ratings. Results: A total of 91 participants completed study procedures with an average enrollment of approximately one consult per week. Participants were referred for testing primarily for guidance for current and future medications. The average number of recommendations per participant was 0.93. Conclusion: Integrating PGx testing into medication therapy management is feasible with PGx results available in under a week resulting in clinical recommendations in over half of patients tested.

Although the COVID-19 outbreak has decreased dermatology outpatient clinic visits, acne remains the most common condition among patients requesting an appointment. The widespread use of face masks may be a contributing factor to acne mechanica and folliculitis mechanica, where stopping the mechanical insult is essential to treatment. However, COVID-19 poses a unique challenge as mask wearing is crucial to limiting viral exposure. Although reported cases of mask-associated facial dermatoses are largely documented in healthcare workers, the general population is being affected by “maskne”. Pathogenesis and treatment options are discussed and the importance of counseling patients on proper skin hygiene is highlighted. As mask use increases, dermatologists should anticipate this trend in acne flare-ups.

Procedures have been established for the computer-assisted collection and retrieval of data generated in the screening and patient care functions of a comprehensive sickle cell center. Data are collected on preprinted mark sense forms from three encounters: hemoglobinopathy screening, outpatient clinic visits, and transfusions. Inpatient clinical data are organized following a prepared outline and are entered directly onto diskpack via a remote terminal. Corrections and verifications of all data entries are performed utilizing the editing capabilities of WYLBUR. Confidentiality of information is maintained by application of a password system for access to the data base and by procedures that assure security of tapes and diskpacks containing clinical and screening data.
