A holistic approach is required with attention to diet, lifestyle, and patient education, as well as laxative treatment. The latest medical treatments including prucalopride and lubiprostone are discussed with specific indications. Few patients will require formal investigation, but those who do need a structured approach which is covered in this chapter.

Male sexual dysfunction is common and may include hypoactive sexual desire disorders/lack of libido, premature ejaculation, decreased ability to climax or orgasm, erectile dysfunction, and/or Peyronie’s disease. There are a myriad of cognitive behavioral, integrative, and traditional medicinal treatment options available. Each treatment has pros and cons. Patient education prior to deciding on a treatment is key. Individual patients need to understand the good and bad of each treatment to make an informed decision about how they want to meet their sexual health goals. Traditional medical treatments were discussed in Chapter 4. The aim of this chapter is to describe other nonmedicinal, nonsurgical treatment options for male sexual dysfunction.

Southern Water (a ScottishPower company) has 392 wastewater treatment works, 242 of which serve small communities with populations of less than 2000. Continuing pressures to improve effluent quality coupled with expectations of improved efficiency, and increased demand for resources for major capital schemes prompted Southern Water to take a more holistic approach to improvements and operation of its small treatment works. Operational costs (OPEX) were analysed for individual works enabling identification of target costs of operation (£/pe), opportunities for efficiency savings and investment priorities. A Company approach to investment in small works was produced which included development of a model to identify whether rationalisation (diverting the flows to an adjacent WTW and closing the site) was an economic option, and a Design Standard to simplify decision-making and process engineering for works refurbishment or replacement. The Design Standard focused on delivering low “whole-life-cost” solutions using simple and robust processes that require minimal operator involvement and ensure compliance with discharge consent standards. Southern Water is steadily reaping the benefits from its structured approach to ensuring compliance and cost-effective operation of its small works.

Significant controversy surrounds individuals' reliance on religious healing approaches to the treatment of illness, particularly when such efforts focus on the provision of care for children. These approaches, rooted in organized religions and their theologies, encompass a wide range of practices, ranging from prayer, meditation, and the laying on of hands, to exorcism, speaking in tongues, Spiritism, shamanic intervention, and various rituals of Santería. Numerous faith communities espouse one or more forms of religious healing while discouraging reliance on conventional medical treatments: These communities include the Christian Science Church, the Church of the First Born, End Time Ministries, Faith Tabernacle, Followers of Christ Church, Bible Believers' Fellowship, Christ Assembly, Christ Miracle Healing Center, Church of God Chapel, Church of God of the Union Assembly, Holiness Church, Jesus Through Jon and Judy, “No Name” Fellowship, Northeast Kingdom Community Church, and The Source.Others, such as the Assemblies of God, have moved away from an exclusive reliance on religious healing practices to a more holistic approach that combines religious-healing with at least some aspects of biomedicine. For many of these listed groups, health and illness represent the physical manifestation of moral concerns relating to salvation, which can only be addressed through religious healing.

The management of self-harm (SH) wounds requires a non-judgemental holistic approach on the part of the health professional. It is important that SH wounds are assessed, and that interventions are agreed between the health professional and the patient. This article looks at definitions of SH and provides guidance on how health professionals can make an accurate assessment of the wound and, in addition to agreement treatment with the patient, provide patient education and guidance on self-care.
