Winnicott’s preface to his book The Family and Individual Development gives a statement of its central topic: the family and the theory of the emotional growth of the human child. Winnicott proposes that the prototype of the place where the developing child meets society lies in the original meeting point for us all, the infant-mother relationship. Included are Winnicott’s acknowledgements for the book.

Hazel-leaf roller weevil (Apoderus coryli /L./) is a noteworthy species from the perspective of biology and forestry; it belongs to the family Attelabidae. Its occurrence, development and harmfulness were studied in surroundings of Brno city in 2011 and 2012. Imagoes of the first generation and those of not very numerous second generation are observed to winter in the area under study. From the beginning of May to the end of July they occur on the host woody plants (mainly on Carpinus betulus and Corylus avellana). The males and females consume on average 21 and 33 cm2 of leaves, respectively. The fertilized females cut into the leaf blade in an original manner, and bite into the main and side leaf veins. They fold the withering part of the blade lengthwise to the adaxial face first, and then forming the folded blade into a short cylindrical roll. In the initial phase of rolling, the females lay up on average 1.0 egg into the leaf rolls on C. betulus (1.2 on C. avellana). In total, they make around 30 rolls. The larvae emerge on average within 10 days. In the course of 3 to 4 weeks, they pass through two instars only and damage on average 4 cm2 of leaves. This work describes the occurrence and development of the beetles of the first and second generation. It provides an assessment of the mortality of the individual development stages of A. coryli within the rolls. It was demonstrated that rolling of the leaves causes on average 9 times more damage to the trees than maturation feeding of the beetles.

Winnicott’s preface to Renata Gaddini’s Italian translation of his book The Family and Individual Development, in which he recognises that translation from English culture to Italian culture presents difficulties. Winnicott admits that it cannot be used as a textbook for doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists or any other profession, because it contains the ideas of psychoanalysis, a discipline which involves a new area of understanding and which crosses between several professions. He elaborates on this and on the inevitable hostility towards psychoanalysis, and he challenges the mainstream professions in their attitudes towards it.

Community boards, committees and commissions are an essential element in linking citizens to local government. Their input and involvement provide a credible citizen voice to impact decisions. Training is often the first step necessary to help ensure that boards, committees and commissions can serve in a strong and effective manner. The information contained in this article is based upon a survey conducted in Fall 1992 by the Family Community Leadership (FCL) Project to ascertain training needs of individuals serving on municipal boards, committees and commissions in Carson City, Nevada. Effective leadership has become a more difficult challenge in the context of the ever increasing complexity of our society. Roles have become a complex set of functions rather than simply holding a position. The ability to envision the future, identify and analyze issues and to utilize a wide array of communication skills has been identified by many studies as critical elements for community leaders in the 90s. In the context of local government, Epstein and Cutchin (1990) identify individual development and improved communications as approaches that have been shown successful in achieving organizational excellence. These approaches tend to become more measurable when they are embraced by the total organization and the top of the organizational structure displays involvement with sponsorship and setting of the program's tone.
