This chapter describes how and why Antonine London came to be characterized by an architecture of domestic luxury. This was evidenced by large private houses laid out around several wings with porticoes, dining rooms, and heated private baths, and decorated with mosaic pavements and painted walls sometimes referencing Bacchic iconography. These designs materialized an educated paideia that drew on Hellenistic ideas, perhaps under the influence of the philosophies of the Second Sophistic. These ideas may have first found architectural expression in London in the Hadrianic period, but were more characteristic of the Antonine city. London’s wealth sustained a local demand for imported goods, whilst the waterfronts where these were landed were also busy at times of military campaigns. Several Romano-Celtic temples were built c. AD 165, including one dedicated to Mars Camulus. Imposing mausolea were built within walled cemeteries along the main road into town. These temples and tombs formed a monumental landscape adapted to the religious and funerary processions through the city.

Many landslides occur in Samigaluh District, Kulon Progo Regency, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. However, no research discusses landslides that often occur on the main road connecting the city of Yogyakarta and various tourist resorts in Samigaluh. This study aims at determining the soil vulnerability and lithology model at that main road as a contribution to landslide mitigation planning. This lithology model is based on shear wave velocity (Vs) and layer thickness derived by microtremor datasets. The data were processed by the inversion of the Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) technique of the ellipticity curve method. The result of the study shows that the first layer is associated with topsoil which has Vs of 263 m/s, the second layer is clay which has Vs of 607 m/s, the third layer consists of clay, breccia, and pumice which has Vs of 1119 m/s, and the fourth layer is andesite bedrock which has Vs of 1721 m/s. Andesite is impermeable to water and can become a slip field for landslides. Clay, breccias, and pumice can absorb water so that their weight increases when it rains. When they are on an impermeable rock on a certain slope, a landslide occurs.

Sherman’s invasion of South Carolina forced the evacuation of 7,672 prisoners from Camp Asylum and Florence Prison to North Carolina in February, 1865. More than 1,600 escaped or had to be abandoned along the route to Wilmington. The Confederacy’s attempt to deliver the remaining prisoners for exchange at Wilmington during the Federal campaign against the city interfered with and disrupted both Confederate and Union operations on the battlefield and had consequences for Sherman’s invasion of North Carolina. The story of prisoner movement cannot be separated from the narrative of the military campaigns that concluded the war in the Carolinas.

This chapter examines the harsh international environment in which the Middle Roman Republic existed, focusing on the exigencies of ancient warfare, the stressful independent decision-making responsibilities of generals on military campaign, and how religious ritual was practiced in the battlefield. It also considers the situation of the city of Rome itself in times of military crisis and anarchy. The chapter first provides an overview of traditional interpretations and newer developments in the study of Roman imperialism before discussing the elite's religious practices and beliefs during military campaigns. It argues that a psychological state of intense fear, uncertainty, and anxiety could have underlain many of the Roman ruling elite's religious behaviors in the military realm. Case studies of elite field-commanders' religious behaviors in warfare are presented.

Abstract: The Gods of Rome were regarded by the Romans as their fellow citizens and their interests were fully and completely identified with those of the city. Their role was to serve as guides and counsellors on the actions of the men, particularly the statesmen. When war altered the natural course of civic life and threatened the social peace, the gods took over control of the situation, preventing the Romans from the major and serious calamities that were looming and warning of the extraordinary efforts that they would have to make in order to tackle them and minimize their effects. In the course of certain military campaigns against foreign peoples or during periods of struggle for political leadership, the gods considered that the key to preserving Rome was through sacrificing their consuls. Such announcement came ‘imprinted’ on the liver of an animal to be sacrificed and its fatal end affected the personal fate of the chief magistrates of the state. This signum was recognized in the absence of the ‘head’ of the liver (caput iecoris) of the animal sacrificed. Research on the eleven known cases in the Republic— including that of Julius Caesar himself—and the study of the nature of the signum mortis are the main objectives of this paper.Palabras clave: Historia de Roma, Roma republicana, magistrados romanos, cónsules de Roma, Religión romana, adivinación pública romana, extispicina, miedo.Key words: Roman History, Roman Republic, Roman magistrates, Roman consuls, Roman Religion, Roman public divination, Extispicy, fear.

In July 1552 the city of Siena rebelled against its Spanish overlords that had either influenced or directed the Republic’s government for several years, threw out the Spanish garrison that controlled the city, and open its doors to a French army sent by King Henri II to protect the city and bring it into the French sphere of influence. The man in charge of this army was the French marshal Blaise de Monluc (1500–1577), who arrived shortly after the anti-Spanish insurrection and remained until the end of the siege when the city, exhausted and depleted, finally surrendered to a mercenary army hired by the duke of Florence, Cosimo I de’ Medici, on behalf of Emperor Charles V von Habsburg. In his memoires of his military campaigns, Blaise de Monluc recalls his Sienese years and especially the valour of the women of Siena who contributed in no small way to the defence of their city. This article outlines the events before and during the siege and Monluc’s comments about the women of Siena. It then analyses these comments in order to gain a better understanding of what, exactly, the women did for their city and who these women were.

Hedonic is a model for estimating the land value based on the identified factors that can influence the value of land. There are there (3) factors that influence the value of the land; i.e.; its structure, neighbourhood and location. The current study tries to establish a Hedonic Model that used to determine the land value as guarantee for bank credit. For structure factors, it uses 4 variables, they are the extent of total are, the front width, the direction and the index of the shape. The neighbourhood factors uses 2 variables; i.e.; the number of the sport facilities in radius of 1000 meters and the number of the hospitals in radius of 1250 meters. While the location factor uses 2 variables; i.e.; the nearest distance to the center of the city and the nearest distance to the main road. Statistical analysis used is regression analysis toward land lot sale value of the sample in 2005 as many as 2009 lots. The analysis result suggest that five variables are significant at the stage of α = 0,05, they are extent, shape index, the number of sport facilities in the radius of 1000 meters, hospital facilities in radius of 1250 meters and the distance to the main road. As a whole, this model is able to explain 59,6% of the land value, while the rest 40,4% is explained by other variables outside this model.
