Fusiform Rust Prediction Models for Site-Prepared Slash and Loblolly Pine Plantations in the Southeast

Abstract Several workers have reported relationships between the incidence of fusiform rust in pine plantations and climatic, edaphic, biotic, and cultural factors. These relationships were investigated quantitatively with a regionwide databank compiled from several replicated unthinned stand density studies. Data from over 2,000 remeasured permanent plots were used to develop regression models that predict the proportion of trees per acre with one or more fusiform rust stem galls. Predictor variables are geographic location, age of the plantation, and site index. Use of the models is illustrated with an example. South. J. Appl. For. 10:145-51, Aug. 1986.

The height growth of dominant trees in plantations is often assumed to be independent of initial planting density. This assumption allows for the use of dominant tree height as an index of site quality. We found that this assumption was false for the seven tallest trees in 184 even-aged loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) stands, planted at nine initial planting densities, at four different geographic locations. A strong, highly significant negative correlation was found between dominant height and initial planting density for stands 14 and 16 years of age. This leads to large differences in predicted site index for stands with different initial planting densities planted at the same geographic location. Use of these site indices to predict yield produced large differences in predicted yield (m3/ha) at age 25. These results provide strong evidence for density-dependent height growth, even for dominant trees in the stand, and suggest that site index, used as a measurement of site quality, is confounded with stand density.

Abstract Site index (SI) estimation for loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations is important for the successful management of this important commercial tree species in the West Gulf Coastal Plain of the United States. This study evaluated various SI models for intensively managed loblolly plantations in the West Gulf Coastal Plain using data collected from permanent plots installed in intensively managed loblolly pine plantations across east Texas and western Louisiana. Six commonly used SI models (Cieszewski GADA model, both Chapman-Richards ADA and GADA models, both Schumacher ADA and GADA models, and McDill-Amateis GADA model) were fit to the data and compared. The Chapman-Richards GADA model and the McDill-Amateis GADA model were similar and best in their fit statistics. These two models were further compared to the existing models (Diéguez-Aranda et al. 2006 (DA2006), Coble and Lee 2010 (CL2010)) commonly used in the region. Both the Chapman-Richards GADA and the McDill-Amateis GADA models consistently predicted greater heights up to age 25 than the models of DA2006 and CL2010, with larger height differences for the higher quality sites, but predicted shorter heights thereafter. Ultimately, the McDill-Amateis GADA model was chosen as the best model for its consistency in predicting reasonable heights extrapolated beyond the range of the data. Foresters can use this model to make more informed silvicultural prescriptions for intensively managed loblolly pine plantations in the West Gulf Coastal Plain.

Abstract Five surveys of pine plantations in East Texas over an 18-year period (1969-1987) indicated that fusiform rust (Cronartium quercuum [Berk.] Miyabe ex Shirai f. sp. fusiforme Birdsall and Snow) infection rates have increased to current levels of about 50% on slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) and are continuing to increase on loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) to 10-15% levels. Abstract Stem analysis data collected from dominant and codominant loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) trees in cutover, site-prepared plantations were used to develop site index curves. The data were collected over much of the natural range of loblolly pine. A separable differential equation which expresses height growth as a function of both height and age was used to develop the site index curves. These site index curves should be applicable to loblolly pine plantations on cutover, site-prepared lands through much of the South.1

This study compared growth responses in planted loblolly pine (Pinustaeda L.) and slash pine (P. elliottii Engelm.) stands thinned by using three row-felling methods and at the same density levels, three selective felling methods. The study plots were in six plantations, aged 15–22 years, located in central Louisiana. Growth was measured 5 and 10 years after plot installation. Site index varied from 19.5 to 31.7 m (base age 50) and initial planting densities ranged from 1993 to 2989 trees/ha. Study results show there will likely be less diameter increment and less net basal area and cubic-metre volume per unit area growth and yield, and the growth will be in smaller-sized trees, if row thinning is used rather than selective thinning from below. These differences will probably be greater in slash pine plantations than in loblolly pine plantations.

Abstract Four methodologies to project future trees per acre by diameter class were compared to develop a new modified stand table projection growth model for unmanaged loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) and slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) plantations in East Texas. The new models were fit to 92,882 observations from 153 permanent plots located in loblolly pine plantations and 33,792 observations from 71 permanent plots located in slash pine plantations throughout East Texas. The new models were validated with 12,750 observations from 22 permanent plots and 3,724 observations from 9 permanent plots located in loblolly and slash pine plantations, respectively. The validation data were used to select between the four methodologies. The results indicated which of the new models produced the best results, based on error indexes calculated for trees per acre and basal area per acre at the stand table and diameter class levels across a range of projection lengths. We recommend that this new model be used by forest managers for projecting stand tables in East Texas loblolly and slash pine plantations. An example is also provided to show users how to use the new modified stand table projection model.

Abstract Color aerial photography was used to assess crown color classes in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations. Three distinct Munsell color classes were delineated on the resulting photographs. Foliar N levels and, to a lesser degree, foliar K levels were directly related to color. Significant relationships between color and site index and color and basal area were shown. Application of color aerial photography, combined with Munsell color coding, could expedite land classification and also make possible more efficient use of fertilizers. South J. Appl. Abstract The influence of oak control and pine growth on fusiform rust incidence (percentage trees infected) on rust-susceptible slash and loblolly pines was evaluated at age 5 yr at seven potentially high-rust-incidence locations in the Coastal Plain of FL, GA, and MS. Rust-susceptible oaks were reduced or eliminated in a 9 ac treatment block and the surrounding 500 ft border zone of an oak-free (OF) area; oaks were not controlled in an adjacent oak-present (OP) area. At four of seven locations, rust incidence was significantly greater on the OF areas compared with the OP areas, and among all locations, average rust incidence on pine was greater (Pr > F = 0.06) on the OF areas (51.4%) than on the OP areas (40.0%). Greatly reducing rust-susceptible oak stems in the treatment blocks and in a surrounding 500 ft border did not reduce rust incidence on rust-susceptible slash or loblolly pine. Inoculum to infect pine came from beyond the 500 ft border zone. Greater pine height, associated with reduced competition from oaks, likely contributed to the greater rust incidence on pine in the OF areas. South. J. Appl. For. 19(4):151-156.
