To assess the efficacy, quality of life, and complication rate of cochlear implantation in patients over 60 years of age, we performed a retrospective chart review of 31 cochlear implant patients more than 60 years old at the time of surgery (mean, 70 years; range, 62 to 86 years). All patients had improvement in their audiological test results after operation. Twenty-eight patients (93%) are regular implant users at a median follow-up of 12 months. Major complications occurred in 2 patients (6%). We conclude that cochlear implantation in the elderly population has excellent results, with a complication rate similar to that in patients less than 60 years old, and yields an improved quality of life.

The Malaysian government estimated that in 2013, 5.5% of the Malaysian population comprises of senior citizens aged 60 years old and above. Recent research had revealed that 14.3% of the older Malaysians are at risk of Major Neurocognitive Disorder (MND; also known as dementia). As the elderly population increases gradually in the country, the chances of them suffering from MND are also expected to increase. MND is often associated with a decline in memory or thinking skills which are severe enough to affect the ability to perform everyday activities among those who are diagnosed with these symptoms. Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is a brief treatment for those suffering from mild to moderate MND. However, the efficacy of this treatment has not been evident in Malaysia. The aim of the present study is to identify the effectiveness of CST in stabilizing the declination of cognitive functions, as well as improving the quality of life among elderly suffering from mild to moderate MND. Thirty elderly diagnosed with mild and moderate MND will be invited to participate in a single group pre-post trial, involving a 45 minute CST treatment to be administered for 14 weeks on a regular weekly basis. The participants will be selected from residents of care centers elderly at Klang Valley area. The outcomes and effectiveness of the CST will be determined by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and Quality of Life-Alzheimer’s Disease (QOL-AD). The former instrument will be used to examine the cognitive abilities of the elderly, while the latter will be used to determine issues related to the quality of life based on the participant and caregivers rating report. As the CST efficacies has been proven in several countries such as the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Japan, the present study anticipates that it will also be effective in the Malaysia context and helps in treating MND.

Parkinson disease causes several changes in gait, such as postural stability, which consequently induces fall risk factors and loss of quality of life. Alternative forms of treatment through rhythmic and dance stimuli have been used to minimize the Parkinson disease effects, which have been shown to be effective in improving gait and providing social well-being and quality of life in the patient. Aim: This review aims to demonstrate the efficiency of music and dance for gait improvement and symptom alleviation in Parkinson disease. Methodology: Studies that analyzed sound stimuli and dance in gait improvement in Parkinson disease were searched through PubMed, Scopus, Doaj, MEDLINE, and ScienceDirect databases from November 2017 to April 2018 and repeated in September 2018. Results and Discussion: Forty-five studies met the inclusion criteria to synthesize the findings on dance and music performance as a treatment for classical symptoms of Parkinson disease. Five reviews and 40 experimental papers have shown that rhythmic stimulation and dance provide the motor, cognitive, and quality of life benefits for participants with Parkinson disease. Thus, sound stimuli and dance offer satisfactory effects for gait, improving cognitive abilities such as motor control and adjustment and spatial memory. In addition, these new treatment modalities stimulate the elderly population to practice physical exercise, generating well-being and helping self-esteem. Conclusion: Dance and music therapy interventions are noninvasive, simple treatment options, which promote gait and cognition.

Objective To assess audiologic performance and quality of life in geriatric cochlear implantation patients and to determine whether comorbid medical conditions, etiology, and duration of hearing loss impact audiologic and quality of life outcomes. Methods Geriatric patients who underwent cochlear implantation between 1990 and 2006 were evaluated. Inclusion criteria were 55 years of age or older at time of implantation and post-lingual hearing loss. Patients with primary language other than English were excluded. 49 cochlear implant recipients were identified. A group of younger implanted patients was used as a control. All patients completed standardized audiologic tests including the Hearing In Noise Test. Validated surveys, including the Glasgow Benefit Inventory and the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly, were used to assess quality of life. Results The mean age at implantation was 69.5 (range 58–85) and the average time interval from the implantation to the completion of the surveys was 73.2 months (6 to 229). Identified comorbid conditions included hypertension, diabetes, and malignancies, among others. Audiologic performance and quality of life scores between the two groups were similar. In the geriatric group there was no difference in patient satisfaction between subgroups with 0–1, 2–3 or > 3 comorbid conditions. Conclusions Our results suggest that the audiologic performance and quality of life scores between the older and younger age groups are similar. In the geriatric group associated comorbidities did not interfere with patient satisfaction as assessed by survey instruments.

The article is devoted to the review of foreign studies on the impact of cochlear implantation on the quality of life of persons with hearing impairment. The results of the work of American, Australian, Italian, Romanian, Israeli scientists indicate a significant improvement in auditory perception after cochlear implant surgery, which has the most positive impact on the quality of life of patients of different ages (children, adolescents, adults, the elderly). The article also considers additional parameters that affect the quality of life, such as the possibility of participation in social life, financial well-being, psychological characteristics (attitude to oneself and one’s impairment, anxiety, ability to protect one’s interests), etc.

This article deals with the results of work on the creation of an import–substituting technology for the production of domestic cochlear implants. Cochlear implantation is considered as a radical method for solving hearing problems, both in children and in the elderly. The experience of domestic operations was analyzed by interviewing patients who underwent the procedure of cochlear implantation. To solve the research problem, we analyzed the accumulated experience of domestic operations by interviewing patients who underwent the procedure of cochlear implantation. We will highlight the criteria for the success of improving the quality of life of patients, and we found a correlation between the success of improving the quality of life of a patient after surgery with the characteristics of the implant used. Based on the analysis of these correlations and a detailed study at the laboratory bench of the implant that most contributed to the improvement of the quality of life of patients, we proposed a configuration of a domestic device designed to replace a foreign analogue in medical practice.

The problem faced by the elderly as human aging process is a process and natural. Some problems and disorders that frequently arise or occur in the elderly is declining cognitive function. Cognitive decline in the elderly is usually preceded by decline of memory or memory (forgetfulness) and other cognitive mengggu real life activities. The purpose of this study was to find out: "The correlation between cognitive function and quality of life in the elderly (60-74 years) in Barusari Vilage of South Semarang. This research is a descriptive correlative with cross sectional design. The population in this study is that all elderly people aged 60-74 years. The sampling technique used is total sampling. Bivariate test using chi square test. The results showed that the cognitive function of elderly most categories of serious disturbance (48.1%), and most of the quality of life category is independently as many as 32 people (61.5%). Statistical test results found there is significant correlation between cognitive function and quality of life in the elderly (60-74 years) in Barusari Vilage of South Semarang with p value of 0.000.Based on the results of the study are expected to nursing profession are expected to provide nursing assistance to the elderly who have suffered physical setbacks by helping in order to keep good quality of life and help in order to have good cognitive abilities.
